My metabolism is ass, so everytime I've tripped on literally anything, I needed to deal with school/uni, work, social and familial obligations while tripping balls all the while trying to not seem like I'm tripping.

So, considering this is my first time dropping acid, I don't really know how many tabs I can drop before being obvious as fuck that I'm high.

Suppose someone throws a rock at Spider-Man. Does his spider sense say β€œincoming object behind you”, or does it say β€œsmall stone coming from 2 o’clock at a 10mph velocity, you have 1.5 seconds to duck”?

And furthermore, can he choose to ignore it? Or is it an instinctive override to pull him out of danger?

Modularity of Mind and Motor Functions

Sorry i'm a bit late to the last episode, so i assume the episode thread is dead so i'm posting here.

Listening to last episode made me think of something i run trough my mind every now and then. It's the question if there is some kind of identifiable area of the brain kind of like a Software-Driver (Hardcoded in wetware in this case) that drives dual systems of the body like the arms and legs, that is duplicated for the left and right arm for example. I was surprised that this didn't come up at all in the episode except for somewhat tangentially with the guys talking about vision. (Thinking about it now vision, and perception and the signals being processed form each individual eye owuld be perhaps the ultimate version of this problem)

What i mean is is there some kind of premade brain stuff that develops into the parts that control the arms or is it all just neural plasticity and you happen to have two arms so the motor functions to trigger movement just develop for each arm independently from each other and looking nothing alike in terms of neurons/synapses.

One argument against it being related would be that humans develop a dominant hand, so the Software for your dominant hand would have to account for higher dexterity (or lower on the non-dominant one).

I hope it's understandable what i'm getting at :D

Maybe i should throw this question into the r/askscience sub

Where to buy power function motors in 2021 for a good price?

I recently started participating in the FLL (First Lego League) and because the robot we use belongs to my school, i can't take it home to do my tests. So i thought, why not buy power function motors and build a test robot with them? The only, problem is, they are old and not sold on the lego.com site (I don't want to buy the Powered Up Motors as i already have some power function motors).

I live in Switzerland and so, i looked up the motors on toppreise.ch (find good quality products for cheap) and the cheapest one i could find was 40$! It's way too much for me so anyone in this sub know were you can find good motors for a fair price?

I'd Like to Drive a Stepper Motor using just a Function Generator and Logic

Is there a simple and easy way to make a circuit that creates two square waves, 90 degrees out of phase using a single function generator?

To clarify, the function generator will be providing a square wave with a steady frequency and average voltage. Can this signal be manipulated to use a stepper?

Is this what a stepper driver does?

Drill motor lost its variable speed function

A wire broke in the cord for my Makita drill motor, right at the strain relief, so I cut the cord shorter and re-attached it to the trigger switch. I was pretty sure I reconnected the wires properly without disconnecting anything else, but now the drill has no variable speed function, just on or off. What are some things I can check to help find the problem? Is it likely to be something inside the trigger switch itself? Those things are kind of fiddley when you take them apart and it would not have been difficult for me to dislodge something.

Just hit plat playing without any motor function in my hands!

Not a super high rank but a huge achievement for me. Just hit plat without any function or movement in my hands and fingers! I’m a quadriplegic with an injury to my 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae that left me paralyzed. For the longest time I put off playing because of this. However, I can still move my wrists and my thumbs are stiff enough for me to poke my screen so I decided to make it work best I can.

I mainly played ADC (Ezreal and Kaisa) and JG. Those two mainly so I can focus objectives. This is maybe a bit more of a flex post, but feel free to ask me questions about tips or my injury.

Detox for stroke? Motor functions and muscle control.

Hey guys, So first off I wanna say that I’m no scientist, I know a little about dopamine and the benefits of detoxing and stuff like that. I had a stroke about 4-5 years ago and I recovered pretty quickly and im very very lucky too be in the spot that im in right now. But I was wondering if there has been any study’s about detoxing for muscle control? My muscles are paralyzed basically too the point where my brain is making them fire on all cylinders when I’m not trying too. I’m going too try it whether there is any study’s with that or not but it is very interesting.

Does anyone else have motor function issues where quickly and momentarily some part of your body stops responding?

I can't move like I used to. I'm much slower. My right side mostly, some part of my body will just drop etc. My speech, not noticeable to others but I can't move my tongue like I used to either.

It's painfully obvious to me.

I can't exercise like I used to. Doing body combat for example, early on I lose the ability to lift my leg up high enough. It's not age related, it's like a disruption between my brain and my body. I'm mid 30's.

I'm sorry if this is rambling, articulating it is very difficult.

Anyone experience this? Anyone that has been diagnosed with something?

Thank you..

Neuroinflammation increases GABAergic tone and impairs cognitive and motor function in hyperammonemia by increasing GAT-3 membrane expression. Reversal by sulforaphane by promoting M2 polarization of microglia - PUBMED 2016

Hyperammonemia induces neuroinflammation and increases GABAergic tone in the cerebellum which contributes to cognitive and motor impairment in hepatic encephalopathy (HE). The link between neuroinflammation and GABAergic tone remains unknown. New treatments reducing neuroinflammation and GABAergic tone could improve neurological impairment. The aims were, in hyperammonemic rats, to assess whether:

  1. Enhancing endogenous anti-inflammatory mechanisms by sulforaphane treatment reduces neuroinflammation and restores learning and motor coordination.
  2. Reduction of neuroinflammation by sulforaphane normalizes extracellular GABA and glutamate-NO-cGMP pathway and identify underlying mechanisms.
  3. Identify steps by which hyperammonemia-induced microglial activation impairs cognitive and motor function and how sulforaphane restores them.

Methods

We analyzed in control and hyperammonemic rats, treated or not with sulforaphane, (a) learning in the Y maze; (b) motor coordination in the beam walking; (c) glutamate-NO-cGMP pathway and extracellular GABA by microdialysis; (d) microglial activation, by analyzing by immunohistochemistry or Western blot markers of pro-inflammatory (M1) (IL-1b, Iba-1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) microglia (Iba1, IL-4, IL-10, Arg1, YM-1); and (e) membrane expression of the GABA transporter GAT-3.

Results

Hyperammonemia induces activation of astrocytes and microglia in the cerebellum as assessed by immunohistochemistry. Hyperammonemia-induced neuroinflammation is associated with increased membrane expression of the GABA transporter GAT-3, mainly in activated astrocytes. This is also associated with increased extracellular GABA in the cerebellum and with motor in-coordination and impaired learning ability in the Y maze. Sulforaphane promotes polarization of microglia from the M1 to the M2 phenotype, reducing IL-1b and increasing IL-4, IL-10, Arg1, and YM-1 in the cerebellum. This is associated with astrocytes deactivation and normalization of GAT-3 membrane expression, extracellular GABA, glutamate-nitric oxide-cGMP pathway, and learning and motor coordination.

Conclusions

Neuroinflammation increases GABAergic tone in the cerebellum by increasing GAT-3 membrane expression. This impairs motor coordination and learning in the Y maze. Sulforaphane could be a new therapeutic approach to improve cognitive and motor function in hyperammonemia, hepatic encephalopathy, and other pathologies associated with neuroinflammation by promo
