I feel like an absolute idiot. I just finished watching Tick Tick Boom (I’ve been in love with Andrew Garfield for years. Gosh, what a treasure that man is) and the diner that “Jonathan” works at is the same diner Monica works at after she’s fired for accepting that “kick back.”
I yelled at the screen “hey Monica worked there!” And my husband said “hun… that’s a very real, very famous diner you know….”
So basically, I’m dumb but it’s funny to think Jonathan Larson and Monica Geller worked at the same place 😂

Welcome everybody to this in-depth look at the NW catalog! Over the next hundred(ish) days I’ll be talking about one song each day and delving into its composition and songwriting and offering my thoughts as well as assigning it an arbitrary rating and noting any specific live performances of note. I’ll also talk about specific things within the song that catch my ear and timestamps to follow along. I hope you enjoy reading this journey as much as I did writing it, and I welcome any discussion, thoughts, and feedback.
Introduction
I talk a lot in this series about the atmosphere of a song/album. In musical land, the atmosphere is the sonic landscape that is laid out before you in your mind. If your mind is a blank canvas, and the songs are the paint, the atmosphere is the specific color combinations, textures, and commonalities that keep a cohesive setting. In an album, atmosphere is a combination of motifs, instruments, harmonies, and lyrical patterns that consistently come in and out of songs, painting a grander picture where the sum is more than the whole. Nightwish excels at atmosphere building. Oceanborn has one of the strongest ones. To me the atmosphere it invokes is of the mystery and wonder of new magic. Something mystical that’s harnessed but not fully understood. It’s like witnessing the birth of the band’s chemistry and Tuomas’ genius in real time. Moondance, the instrumental 7th track from Oceanborn, is pure distilled Oceanborn atmosphere.
Songwriting
No lyrics to be found here, but instead let me talk about why this song affects me so much. This song is early band stuff, and therefore it’s not overly complicated or intricate. The instruments are synthesized for the most part, the elaborate orchestration of later instrumentals isn’t there. The riffs aren’t face melting. But sometimes, something simple done completely right can transcend time and space and become something that sounds amazing at any time. That’s what this song is to me, simple perfection.
Composition
This song is all about the little touches. There are so many cool elements to this song that become staples of later instrumentals like Last of the Wilds. The song has a simple melody that starts off on a lovely piano before we launch into the full band. The piano is sped up and a synth string echoes it’s melody. What’s really cool here is Emppu and Jukka, they are playing a galloping beat, like the thundering sprint of a horse. We then transition back into the

I sold my album collection back in the 80's and lost the story from the Moondance album. Subsequent copies I found later did not fold out so the story was gone. Over the years I've looked for it on the web with no luck. It was a story about someone who made music for the love of music. He was convinced by others to start charging for the music. Doing that causes him to lose his love for music.
Does anyone have the album with it in it, have a copy of the story, or know where the story came from? Thanks
