CaspianReport recently made a video on Maphilindo and it got me thinking a bit on the possibilties on that kind of Superstate, even if it was only meant as a Regional Organization.
I think Maphilindo would have been a mixed bag of problems and solutions in a way...
Problems I think we'd encounter:
- Maphilindo might become a divided state because of a similar situation to the British Raj -- a Muslim East and a Catholic North East with dispersed communities of Protestants in the East. I think with this religious issue, we'd end up with the same situation the Holy Roman Empire ended up in with a Philippines sparking some secession movement based on our ethnolinguistic and ethnoreligious difference to the Greater Sunda Islands or the Strait of Malacca-Java Sea area. IDK but without a majority Catholic (Christian) area in the federacy (as I expect this Superstate to be) then the Chinese (and Indians) in Peninsular Malaya would feel quite overwhelmed with the core area of majority-Muslim Java and the Malayan Peninsular elite so it'd be a larger Singapore just with them chasing secession not the other way around. I can't even imagine the general response of the majority-Christian areas of the PH to internal migration from majority-Muslim Malaya or Java.
- Setting aside the religious issues, I think Filipinos would still feel quite overwhelmed and overpowered with the economically consolidated Java and Peninsular Malaya, and I expect the Southern Philippines to be quite cross with this fact. I expect them to think that this is just Imperial Manila in a larger form -- Imperial Nusantara, or Imperial Java/Malaya. The current situation of Imperial Manila is already driving some separatist sympathies among the Southerners so I expect a secessionist movement of bigger proportions on the Filipino Archipelago, especially the Visayas/Bisdak areas.
- As the economic and, I feel, the political center moves to the Strait of Malacca-Java Sea area, so would the cultural and linguistic center and so Language is a potential issue. I feel like most Filipinos (Tagalogs and non-Tagalogs) would feel a overpowering cultural presence of Malay language media and culture which would be akin to the issues we have with Tagalog being chosen as the National Language across an archipelago with differing languages (almost 150 last I recall). I would like to suggest to this subreddit about setting a discussion about the what if MaPhilIndo was pushed in the 1960s and how it would impact the following these events and issues:
- Vietnam War
- Diplomacy with Japan, especially after its economic rise in the 80s
- Role in ASEAN
- Rise of ISIS
- Dealing with China
- Diplomatic relationship with Taiwan
- The 90s Asian financial crisis
It would be good if we would be able to ask the other r/malaysia, r/indonesia, and r/Singapore about how it would hypothetically pan out.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
