Romans is usually regarded as a screwball type of comedy just like the film it borrows its core plot from, We're No Angels(1989) (which is comparatively very forgettable imo). But I think the Kunchacko - Biju Menon starrer is also a quite brilliant satire of religion especially Christianity.
It was quite refreshing to see a Malayalam comedy film take digs at a religious establishment quite liberally. Almost all the priest/achan characters in the movie were deeply flawed characters unlike the "all knowing advisor" we were used to seeing in previous Malayalam movies. Though film doesn't explicitly disown religion/ Christianity to prevent alienating the audiences too much, but even the final shot where the two are canonized and statues erected for them, showed the film's utter irreverance for blind belief. Because of this, in my opinion Romans was a much more subtle and effective takedown of religion and blind beliefs than movies like PK (2014).
Another aspect of the movie I loved was the characterisation of the Poomala village inhabitants. Even though they appear like the foolish simpletons frequenting old Satyan Anthikad movies and later movies like Kunjiramayanam (2015) at first sight, Poomala inhabitants also have a much darker side to them as shown in the opening sequence and the climax. So, they're stupid not because of the age-old "villagers are innocent" cliche but because they're blinded by their deeply held beliefs which is consistent with the themes of the film.
Despite being the second highest grosser of 2013 behind the phenomenon that was Drishyam, I think Romans is quite forgotten ( probably due to lack of big stars ), which is quite unfortunate imo.

Not sure if this has been asked here before. Personally, I wish Malayalam cinema would tone down the BGM... it's so fucking loud and unnecessary most of the time and really ruins the experience for me. Eg-Drishyam 2: an okay film that I would've enjoyed more without the serial style BGM. Also, dubbing just feels very unnatural to me... especially if the actor is a non malayali who can't speak malayalam fluently.

I personally feel that 1980s can be said as the best decade for Malayalam cinema. Great directors, great performances by actors etc(maybe biased). But the average movie quality was better in 2010s.

Weather they succeeded or not does not matter. What matters is if they put in genuine effort to bring change.
Everyone knows about the amount charged by actors when it comes to Malayalam cinema, but does any one have any idea about the remuneration received by Technicians ranging from Directors, Cameraman to Assistant Directors in Industry?
Does their remuneraion vary due to star power or Hits or Flops in the kitty?

Seems like bollywood concentrates most of its stories in urban and foreign locations whilst the bulk of their viewers are rural. In Malayalam, I understand most of the talent comes from rural areas and hence stories based on their experiences

[Serious] I was planning to do a scrapbook on the fashion choices of Malayalam film charcters. I know mollywood don't give a lot of shit on how the character's dress (exception s are there) . But there are some character s that dress pretty good .For example how Amala Akkineni dresses in Enta sooryapoothriku is pretty badass that makes her look different from the typical girl in 90s street. If you observe the fashion in movies like I do please do contribute or can ignore. No need to spread hate. ( also please don't come up with characters like Nazriya in trance and all,those are basic) .Also to make it clear I'm NOT asking about their off duty style,but as the characters they potray.
I have recently started watching a lot more films with deeper interest and I have been watching mostly English language films. But having grown up watching Malayalam (which is a South Indian language) cinema, I have to say that I wish there were more film lovers who'd invest time and watch Malayalam films, and have discussions. The language barrier is real and context always helps, but when I watch DDL and he gives me goosebumps, I am reminded of several incredible performances by actors in Malayalam cinema. I really do think more people should check it out!!
