A list of puns related to "Mainsheet Traveller"
I am curious about people's thoughts on mainsheet/traveler location as per the title. Any preferences? Cabin top mainsheet has a lot of appeal because it gets a lot of stuff out of the cockpit β but you do end up needing to hang out near the companionway in a lot of boats. Also, the end-boom arrangement is simpler from an engineering standpoint I suspect.
But I'm also a little confused about one issue:
The two boats I did most of my sailing on had the mainsheet and traveler just aft of the cockpit, so it wasn't "in" the cockpit at all. If you were at the back of the cockpit reclining with your arms over the seat or something, you would have to be aware of the main sheet, but that was about it. It seems like a great arrangement. But when I google end-boom mainsheets I get a lot of discussion of how annoying it is to have the traveler running through the cockpit. Is there a specific term for a mainsheet/traveler that is aft of the cockpit? I'm also curious why it isn't more common? Something to do with boom length and mast placement I assume, but not sure why it isn't better to just make sure the boom goes all the way to back of cockpit.
I've only been taking the ASA courses, and have no experience sailing (yet!). I'm struggling to understand the point of a traveler, and how it's used to trim a sail.
Thanks for any help yβall can offer!
Hello Sailors,
I have recently started sailing on a 2003 Hunter 356, and this is the first boat I have sailed. One thing I have noticed that is a bit concerning to a novice like myself is in gusty/heavy weather, when sailing between a close haul and a beam reach, the boat wants to head up into the wind. At one point this weekend I had the helm all the way to port, and the boat was still turning to starboard.
Is there a way to prevent this, because that was quite scary in the high traffic San Diego harbour.
Edit: thanks for helping me learn, everybody! Will certainly be reefing in lighter weather than before, as well as focusing on sail trim!
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
Or would that be too forward thinking?

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.
Daughter: I'm hungry
Me: nerves building, smile widening
Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.
She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.
Thank you all for listening.

Hi maybe you can help me. I'm racing on a j/92 and I have a question on upwind mainsail trim. When we are going upwind in about 17kts we have good boatspeed, the traveller is near the bottom and the twist in the leech is pretty good with the top telltale flying about 70-80% of the time with the lower telltales flying constantly. What I've noticed is that the luff of the mainsail tends to invert a lot, it flaps a little to windward. It's not an issue with pointing too high and I'm pretty happy the mainsheet tension is good give how the leech is performing.
I'm wondering could it be the slot between the jib and the mainsail is too narrow and it's back winding the main. The boat feels like it's in the groove but it does look weird with seemingly neutral pressure between the windward and leeward sides of the luff.
