The popularity of Persona 5 (and a newfound popularity for Persona, SMT and other JRPG games) made me wonder: Why don't more Western developers make more Urban Fantasy games despite the popularity of Urban Fantasy in Western Television, Film, Literature and Board Games?

I don't know why Urban Fantasy, a genre that is popular in literature (Harry Potter, Percy Jackson), Television (Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Cartoons (Gravity Falls) and Board Games (Vampire the Masquerade) are not more popular in Western Video Games unlike in Japan. We just saw Persona 5 released and is quickly becoming the most popular Urban Fantasy RPG of this generation.

However, it seems that only Japan makes Urban Fantasy games. Even when they're not making Urban Fantasy JRPGs, developers like Swery and Yu Suzuki would make games with a lot of Urban Fantasy elements like Deadly Premonition and Shenmue.

In the last decade, we see just a few Western Urban Fantasy games:

  • Life Is Strange

  • Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines

  • Shadownrun

  • Secret Worlds

And that's pretty much it I guess. While Urban Fantasy is still popular in other mediums (especially with the return of Twin Peaks, and the popularity of Stranger Things), for some reason developers still aim for Historical RPGs like Assassin's Creed, Scifi like Mass Effect or Horizon, Post-Apocalyptic like Fallout or Wasteland and Fantasy like The Witcher or Dragon Age.

I seriously don't understand why Western Video Games make more Urban Fantasy games like their Japanese counterparts. I'd love to play a Western RPG set in an American High School.

I can't see any budgetary reasons limiting the development of a Western Urban Fantasy game, and I certainly do not see "the lack of popularity" being a factor especially in the age where Urban Fantasy has been more popular than ever. I seriously cannot think of a reason why Western developers do not want to make a Western counterpart to SMT and Persona games.

For books you read right after watching the TV show or made for Television film, do you have a hard time picturing scenes with the book's original description of characters and end up unintentionally projecting the show's cast?

his was inspired because I am reading the original Slayers novels from which the famous anime series was adapted from. The anime made a few changes to the protagonist Lina Inverse in particular making her a redhead. Despite being based on Audrey Hepburn, because the original novel's illustrator drew her in anime art style, Lina doesn't appear to resemble Audrey Hepburn at first glance............

Being a diehard Audrey Hepburn watcher for decades........... It was very easy for me to not project Slayers with animated scenes of a redhead sorceress in my head as I read the original light novels............... Instead I visualize the description as a live action movie starring Audrey Hepburn as a sword-wielding sorceress!!! I even imagine Lina Inverse speaking with a similar British accent Audrey had irl made famous by her movies!

So I am curious do you have problems reading books after watching movies for the completely opposite reason? When I was reading Doctor Zhivago and Gone With the Wind,I had difficulty with some of the characters because their descriptions differed so much. Ashley was described as far more handsome in the book than Leslie Howard was (who at that point was aged and worn out from his acting career) and not to mention the book described him as having a mustache and long hair at various chapters. Doctor Zhivago was even much harder- Yuri was described as not handsome at all, even words implying ugly...... While Lara was still implied to be dead drop gorgeous as Julie Christie was! So basically I had to visualize an ugly man with a gorgeous blonde blue-eyed bombshell unlike in the movie where famously extremely handsome Omar Sharif played Yuri. When I was reading Vampire Diaries after finishing the whole original show last year, I pictured Ian Somerhalder the whole readthrough.

In fact unless its my most favorite stars such as Shannen Doherty, Liz Taylor, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, and so much more esp the Goddess of Cinema Audrey Hepburn!!!!!!............. I now read the book before watching the movie because its a distraction trying to visualize the descriptions only for the movie star version to immediately project in a split second as you are reading a scene.

Does anyone have the same problem? I bring the whole subject up because of the irony it was far more easier reading the Slayers light novels than watching the TV show because of how the Lina's supposed to resemble Audrey Hepburn in the books. Its usually the opposite for me w

[TOMT][MOVIES OR SHOW][90S] Television Series or Made for TV Film about a group of people in space on an abandoned mining station with "fighter crafts' or mechas.

So this has driven me insane but there was a Show(?) I watched as a child with my family of a group of people lost in space who stumble upon an abandoned mining station (or something like that) and they are trying to survive while fighting some other bad guy and they fight (them?) with either mechs or fighter jets. One guy I recall paints the old school shark face on his mecha/fighter.

this is the best that I recall it had a syfy channel feel to it.
