Live USB Persistence issue - even after going through the old posts

I've successfully created the Live USB and it works great.

While trying to create the persistence in Terminal in Mint, the echo "/ union" command in all the tutorials doesn't work - just get a permission denied, even running it with sudo.

Combed through the posts on here and booted into the Live and tried it there. Same problem, even with sudo.

Found another post that said to go to stackexchange and follow the guide. The one where the answer uses "folder" instead of "file". Went into the persistence folder, created persistence.conf, added / union.

EDIT: This is the one referred to in other posts. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/306096/kali-wont-save-adding-persistence-to-kali-linux-rolling

Nope.

Saw a comment about the quotes. Added the quotes. Rebooted. Removed the quotes. Rebooted. Nope.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: i think I might have a work around but it's not a solution. Now that I've had some sleep, I'll tackle it again. Thanks for the upvotes to keep it alive!

Current solution is WiFi and watching some local stream of the device while connected to the device’s network.

Looking for a usbmux’d solution, or for the device to appear as /dev/video1 or something

Are web accounts safe on Persistent Live USB without full disk encryption?

I've created a Live Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS USB disk with persistence on and have setup a local account that is password protected. I intend to use this during my travels.

Everything I need is available as a webapp and the only non web apps installed are a password manager (Enpass) and Chrome. I've logged into Chrome with my google account and have signed into all of my other accounts on it.

My question: Is there a risk of compromising my (web) accounts in the even that I loose the USB disk? My local account password is fairly strong.

Boot from live USB stuck at 'Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok'

Hello, I am trying to install and try NixOS for the first time. Using an old laptop for this. After the grub screen for the live USB, it just gets stuck with a blinking cursor at

Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok

Some note-worthy info:

  • The checksum matches for the iso I used
  • Linux version of balenaetcher gave an error saying cannot read properly 'message' of null at the end of the burning process, Windows version ran without any errors
  • I using dd if=<nixiso>.iso of=/dev/<usb>; still the same problem
  • Using the cp command to copy files over to the USB drive also has the same problem

I was really excited to try this out but lol

Use Live USB Ubuntu to Extract Files from Location

For windows 10 machine, we have a user profile that is an admin that we need to extract files from but no one knows the admin credentials when prompted to actually allow the copying/transfer of said user profile.

Someone came up with the idea of creating a bootable ubuntu usb and grabbing the files that way, is this possible? I thought windows would have had some protection in place, but i guess when you have physical access, all other security measures are negated.

Thoughts?

Manual Partition on Persistent Live Debian USB?

TL;DR: How the hecc do I partition a persistent live USB?

Hi everyone! I'm sooo close to my dream of having a live linux environment on a usb but there's a problem I can't seem to solve. I don't know how common this problem is, so here's the whole story in excruciating detail for context: I burned a 64 bit Debian Cinnamon iso on a 16 gb USB using Rufus (on windows, my ONLY OTHER OS). On Rufus I put a 10 gb persistent partition, as I need persistence to keep some coding software and files on the live USB. After that I reset my PC and entered into Debian by selecting the first boot option. In the desktop I clicked on "Install Debian" and went through the options up until the "Partitions" category, and here's where I'm stuck. There are two partitions: sda1 (4.3 gb FAT32, with boot flag checked) and sda2 (10 gb ext3, I suppose the space for persistence?). The only option it gives me is "Manual Partition", but I have no idea what it means to manually partition a USB live drive. I read that I have to give it a "swap space", and one of them has to be the "/boot" and another the "/", but I have no idea what I'm doing at this point. Help pls and thanks for reading!

Need linux USB-live distro with persistence and simple partitioning.

I'm looking for a Linux Live distro that can live on USB that offers persistence. It also needs a fairly simple partition structure, or at least one I can doctor easily. I want to have at least one FAT32 partition on it. Either it's own, or one I create. I need a FAT32 partition so the drive can still function as a general purpose pen-drive.

Right now I'm using r/Tails but since Tails lands a GPT partition, I'm overlaying it with a hybrid MBR manually. It works fine and meets all my needs, but Tails is pretty locked down by design.

I was going to maybe try Linux Lite next, but I'm not sure if it offers persistence. The manual appears non-technical.

I'd prefer an Ubuntu derived distro, but I'm familiar with Arch derivatives as well, just not as comfortable.

I keep trying to boot Manjaro from a live USB on my Toshiba Satellite C55-A5172, but it doesn't seem to be working. When I try to boot the USB, I just get kicked back to the BIOS screen.

I've used both Etcher and Rufus to make the live USB for Manjaro but neither of them made a live USB that worked on my laptop. The specs for my PC can be found here.

EDIT: So, the reason why I couldn't get it to boot was because the Toshiba BIOS doesn't work like the other "BIOS"s I have used.

Going to the "Boot" selection menu and hitting "Enter" on the drive you want to boot from doesn't work on my Toshiba. I had to select my USB drive using F5 and make it the first drive that the BIOS boots from. I now have Manjaro running.

TL;DR

I’ve heard that certain distros running as a Live USB can safely be used on a compromised system. Is this true for all Live USBs? I’m planning on booting into one of these Live USBs to download Windows.

I’m sure it’ll be fine since I’m using a Linux distro, but I figured that this would be a good opportunity to learn about malware and security
