A list of puns related to "Kiddush"
Context: I wasnโt raised in a particular religion but I am aggressively culturally a Los Angeles Jew. My dad was the first in the family to marry a non Jewish woman. My dad experienced a lot of antisemitism growing up and my grandma (his mom) was not so much ashamed of being Jewish but wanted to assimilate to non Jewish traditions because of antisemitism (my grandpa was against this and hated that they celebrated Christmas in addition to Hanukkah for example).
Thatโs the very basic background. I consider myself Jewish. I look Jewish, my 23&me literally says 50% ashkenazi, and Iโm very proud of my origins. I consider myself a Jew through and through, though I know that some family members donโt consider me Jewish at all, even my own brother.
Traditions are new to me and Iโm still learning, a rabbi will be marrying my future husband and I (heโs not Jewish), but weโll both be stepping on glass! And thereโs not room for a chuppah but we will be doing the kiddush portion of the ceremony. I really donโt even know what that will entail or how the kiddush cup is used, Iโve done Shabbat a few times so I know thereโs use there and I know in Passover. I wish I were a better Jew in this regard. The rabbi is asking us for the story of our kiddush cup to include in the ceremony but I donโt even know where to buy one or if I should get a set. Any insight on purchasing one or any insight on its symbolism is more than welcomed!
Last night I was at my folks place for dinner. As is usual for a Friday night meal in religious households, my parents made a sacrament over the wine, and then passed out tiny cups to drink some of it. I had a literal sip of mine before putting it down, because you know, didn't want to be rude. But like, does that count? Did I lose my streak? Sorry if that's a weird question!
I feel guilty about it, even though it was literally just a sip.
So when you folks are saying your brachot and such what are you reading from? A siddur? A website? A print out? Are you reading thing piece by piece? Sorry if this is a merit-less question, and thanks in advance.
If sundown is at letโs say 6pm, itโs easy to start the Shabbat with the kiddush, then a meal, and share it with potential children. If sundown is not until 10pm, do you eat before and just do wine and challah or do you have dinner super late? How do you involve young children with Shabbat when theyโre asleep by the time it starts?
I appreciate any personal experiences. :)
I was wondering what unique/fun traditions you guys do in your household on Shabbat, besides the traditional stuff such as Kiddush, Shalom Aleichem, and Hamotzi.
Hello,
I've got a short question regarding phrasing of the kiddush.

"Blessed are you, Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, how has sanctified us with his commandments and favored us, and given us in love and favor his holy Shabbat as an inheritance, as a remembrance of the act of creation. For this day is the beginning of all holy days, a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt. For you have chosen us and you have blessed us from among all the nations. And you have bequeathed us your holy Shabbat in love and favor. Blessed are you, Lord, who sanctifies Shabbat. "
It begins by addressing G-d in the second person, reverts to referring to His commandments and Shabbat in the third person, then back to your holy Shabbat, second person.
Why the jump from second to third person, only to return to second in such a seemingly inconsistent way?
Toda ve shabbat shalom
My fiancรฉ and I arent big fans of wine and even less so of grape juice. Iโm trying to find something that could last a month opened in the fridge. Any ideas? The wines we have liked were very dry, not a fan of sweeter wines. (I know itโs a lot but Iโm hoping someone else has thought about this!)
Ignorant question: my Grandparents (long dead) brought me a Kiddush cup from Israel and I just found it, brand new, never used. But Iโm not Jewish (I mean, I suppose genetically I am). Iโd like to know if using it like a regular goblet is disrespectful; if it is disrespectful, how do I get rid of it in a respectful way? And if isnโt disrespectful, can I just drink wine out of it and remember them fondly?
Thanks for your help!
