Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any Marxist readings of Gaddafi's political thought. I've been doing some research and, while there are a few books about Islamic socialism in general, and particularly al-Nasser's writing, there seems to be very little about English resources on Gaddafi's works.
Ayoub, M (1987) Islam and the Third Universal Theory offers a pretty nice, if rather uncritical, overview of Gaddafi's political thought, but it was written well less than half of the way through Gaddafi's rule.
Hajjar, S. (1982) The Marxist Origins of Qadhafi's Economic Thought explores the direct lineage of Gaddafi's economic thoughts from Marx, but doesn't engage with Gaddafi's form of historical dialectism quite as in depth as I would like.
Unfortunately, those are the only two secondary texts I have been able to find about Gaddafi's political thought, and I was hoping someone here might be able to direct me to more contemporary writings.
I'm particularly interested in how a Marxist perspective interacts with Gaddafi's understanding of class conflict. While Gaddafi rejects the notion of an economic class, he appeals to the revoluationary potential of an idealized umamiya, which he defines as distinctly non-bourgeois. He also argues that religion and nationalism are the two prime movers of human history, which is obviously something Marxist thinkers have attempted to explain since Rosa Luxemburg. Can anyone suggest any Marxist responses to this particular interpretation of Islamic socialism?
Thank you all so much!
Salam everyone, I find myself wanting to learn more about Islamic Socialism, since I am both a Marxist-Leninist and a Muslim. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some important texts to read regarding Islamic Socialism, or any people whose teachings I could look into.
Thanks in advance! All replies are appreciated!
Do you support the governments of Baβathist Syria or Iraq? Do you support Libyaβs Gaddafi or the Iranian Revolution of 1979? Just wondering what other self-described Maoists think of these ideologies, I personally am very critical but also supportive of these, with the exception of the Al-Assadβs Syria (which is irredeemable imo).
Ngl I do find it slightly strange considering that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a Merchant involving in trading and Proto-Capitalist economies existed in the Islamic Golden Age, but in any case what does this subreddit think of Islamic Socialism?

I have noticed a lot of anti iranian propaganda on this sub targeting Chinese people with the agenda of causing strife between China and its second most important ally after Russia.
There are people who are terrorists and idiots brainwashed by terrorists spreading conspiracy theories about Iran not being socialist.

This book goes over decades of monumental socialist success in Iran.
>βIran and its unique socialist system is one of the greatest untold, even hidden, stories of our era. Ramin Mazaheriβs book βSocialismβs Ignored Success: Iranian Islamic Socialismβ is a detailed and very serious compilation of the authorβs analyses, published by various progressive outlets in the West and now re-edited into this powerful and thought-provoking volume.Mazaheri is smashing to pieces our perceptions about Iran - one of the deepest, most fascinating and original cultures on Earth. Many foreigners thought that Iran can be labelled and boxed into established categories. βNo!β writes Mazaheri. Iran can be socialist and religious at the same time. And it can be, and in fact is, on the vanguard of many modern achievements of our humanity. It is a proud, brilliant country which should be listened to, and respected, by all of us.β

Hello everybody. I just wanted to give some of my thoughts on the relationship between Marxism and Islam, in hopes of sparking a useful and fruitful discussion on the topic. Considering the immense damage that capitalism and imperialism have done to the ummah (as well as to humanity as a whole), I feel it is important for us to examine the issue of socialism, while keeping it in an Islamic framework.
First, let us look at the socialist economic system through an Islamic lens.
Socialism in an Islamic Context
By studying Islamic teaching and history, and applying it to a modern context, we may find a great deal of support for the socialist economic system. For example, see the following sahih hadith, narrated by Uthman ibn Affan:
>"There is no greater right for the son of Adam other than these things: a house in which he lives, a garment to cover his nakedness, a piece of bread, and water."
>
>- Sunan al-TirmidhiΜ 2341
This sahih hadith guarantees all human beings a right to food, water, clothing, and shelter. Can capitalism ever guarantee these things? Even in the USA today, we have seven empty homes for every homeless person! By contrast, in a socialist nation such as Cuba, there is virtually no homelessness, as housing is provided as a guaranteed right of all people.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also commissioned a physician to treat the people of Medina free of charge, thus providing free healthcare to the people, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. More information may be found in the following video from Sheikh Omar Suleiman (his entire "40 Hadith on Social Justice" series is worth a watch as well):
Many Islamic scholars and economists have also supported the idea of nationalization and public ownership over the means of production. Afzal-ur-Rehman, an esteemed Islamic economist, said:
>Imam Shafee is of the opinion that when anyone goes beyond the point of moderation in his expenditure, even if he is spending on good and lawful things, his property should be taken away from him and given to the custody of the state (ward). And according to the principle of Ward, the state is within its rights to take over the property of any person who is recklessly destroying his property and thereby damaging the greater good of society. As he is

In late 1948, an islamic socialist group seized control of the town of Salalah in Dhofar Province, in the Federation of Southern Arabia. The fighters hoped to inspire a general uprising across Oman and overthrow the monarchy, establishing a socialist state. The fighters efforts to inspire were not in vain, as they managed to recruit 300 more soldiers to their cause, bringing their numbers up to 800. However, the FSA government response was fierce, deploying 10,000 soldiers, mostly Indian and Persian foreign volunteers, against the tiny group in an operation some have called an overreaction. Nevertheless, the army marched on the town of Salalah from three sides.
The government forces faced serious morale issues. The cause of the socialist had a simmering of support from the foreign units that made up the bulk of the force. Additioanlly, the forces were uninspired, with many not believing that the war was theirs to fight. Thus, as the forces approached Salalah, segments of the Omani forces front lines increasingly ignored the command's orders, instead following their unit commanders, who were much less interested in fighting the rebels.
Nevertheless, fearing the worse if he delayed, the general of the government forces gathered the units he could and attacked, hoping to snuff out the rebellion in one fierce pitched battle. Pincering Salalah in on two sides, the government forces launched an assault. The socialist forces had been digging in for over a year, and knew the terrain like the back of their hands. Thus, with the some defections giving yet more of an informational advantage to them, the defence was incredibly solid. However, hopeless outnumbered, the socialists could not prevent FSA forces from enterring the town, and the fighting changed to unconventional war.
The socialists continued fighting amongst the streets of Salalah, and in the surrounding countryside, striking at the Omani army camps and ambushing patrols. Salalah remains under siege , and the socialist forces as popular as ever. Demoralised units of the government forces have been too undisciplined and unwilling to commit to fighting the socialists with the vigour necessary.
News of the holding out of the socialists of Salalah has spread ar

With the soviet empire's collapse her former vassals are left to fight for themselves. In Arabia her main beneficiaries the Arab and Islamic Socialists now find themselves weakened compared to when they had begun their struggle. They are Nasser's legacy with only few sprouting to be able to lead.
Gaddafi has put in several Communiques his interest in reviving a Arab Union State in the interest of protecting the Arab states from foreign control.
However, in order to revive the sense of pan-arabism under Nasser and also to rebuild

A joint-tarrif reduction of 5% to help encourage trade and open the way forward for further economic growth that isn't available under the current form of autaurky.
Libya hopes to improve unity amongst the disparate pan-Arabist movements, and ensure we don't fall in any sense due to the collapse of the soviet union.
People have begun to publically question the agenda of the government and taking up arms. For now, the Sultan has not yet responded nor is there any sign of military movements.
The cause for Islamic Socialism has gradually spread to many towns and cities of the FSA from Shabwah to Sohar, with it maintaining a stronghold in Salalah. When not fighting, the local communities get together for building hospitals, schools and mosques. Even women and children have become actively involved on the ground roots level. This is something even the Sultan did not do as there are only 3 schools in Muscat and 1 military hospital in the country so far. The communal building of infrastructure only resulted in making the movement all inclusive and attract even more people to join.
The group call themselves "Al Hirak Al Islami Al Ishtiraki aka Al Hirak" (translated as The Islamic Socialist Movement aka The Movement ) have begun to gather rather influential figures into their midst; such as Al Habib Abdullah Al Aidarus, Sheikh Hashim Al Nahdi, Sheikh Jamal Al Kathir, Sheikh Bukhait Harsusi, Ustadh Yahya al Ghafiri and Doctor Salim Al Balushi...
The recent racist incident conducted by British officers "disciplining" a Hadhrami brigadier sparked outrage in the community. What more was the the Sultan's propaganda denouncing Communism backfired. Islam is a non-iconoclaustic religion, and depicting Allah with physical features is considered blasphemy at the extreme.
The Sultan must act swiftly to put down the rebels, as there has not been a single battle fought so far. The last time the Sultan made a public appearance was at the Jabal Akdhar Sayq Plateu to offer rain prayers for this year.
Hussein Kulmiye Afrah decided to launch the Radical Socialist party of Somalia in Burdhubo in October 1937. The platform of the Radical Socialist Party of Somalia involves essentially the removal of clan loyalties in favor of a united Somali identity around a common language, religion, history and culture, the rejection of monarchism (thus being opposed to both Hobyo and the central government in the ongoing war), self-sufficiency and the rejection of foreign interference in Somali affairs (including the German occupation of Jubaland, Dschibuti, Berbera, the Yemeni occupation of Soqotra, and the growing connections with New England), government administration of the economy including social welfare programmes and redistribution of wealth, the modernization of society, and a strong military. Essentially, while agreeing with some of Shire's efforts to develop Somalia, they believe it has been done so in such a way that the natural resources and crops of Somalia will be used to benefit the rich while depriving the typical Somali, in addition to overt favoritism toward Warsangali.
Some prominent members have included Mohammed Siad Barre, who has called for armed revolution against the government, and Sheikh Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein and Haji Farah Ali Omar, who believe the goals of social justice should be achieved peacefully. In contrast to the antitheistic nature of the Russian socialists, the Somali Radical Socialist Party seeks to connect its socialist ideas with Islam, particularly on the zakat. It has gained support primarily among the lower classes in both rural and urban areas. While many more agree with its ideas, they believe that the label of "Radical Socialism" is too extreme and could cause chaos among a society which already is at war/
