Danish Literature

I have been wondering recently: How popular - or well-known - is Danish Literature for literature-enthusiasts on the interwebs. I know that most people are tangentially familiar with the names of Hans Christian Andersen, SΓΈren Kierkegaard and Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). Has anyone outside (or inside) of Denmark actually read these?

I am a humble dane, wondering about the merits of my own culture’s literature around the world. I have personally fallen in love with English, Spanish, German and Russian classics. Has anyone had a similar experience to my affection for Dostoevsky, Cervantes and Kafka, but for the Danish greats. Are the Danish authors forever doomed to a fate of being footnotes in disney-adaptations or being unjustly paraphrased in philosophical discussions? I hope you are able to help me out with my question. I also implore you to read, and enjoy, these authors - amongst others - from my small island-nation. The layers of irony in danish culture and literature can (perhaps) not even be rivaled by Jane Austen in their thickness.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

No Matter How Hard We Wish For It, The Past Cannot Be Changed

C.S. Lewis - you can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending

Unfortunately, the past cannot be changed, let’s face it. But, we can change the person we are today, now, right this second. The past, what exactly is it? Time that’s behind you. So, that can be 20 years ago, 20 months ago, 20 days ago and hell, even 20 seconds ago. That’s all behind you and there’s nothing you can do to get it back. However, the present can be ruined by the past. Wait, how does this happen? The present can be ruined due to you worrying about the past. Instead of focusing on what’s happening today, you’re focusing on what happened in 2017 or 2018, for instance. We are 3 short months away from a brand new year, 2022 and your mind is still back in 2017/18, that was 5 years ago. 5! Instead of focusing on something that happened years ago, let’s focus on the next 5 minutes. That would be a difference wouldn’t it?

By constantly playing games with your own mind, you’re not going to go far, you keep on dragging yourself back. You know what? You might aswell tie your waist around a tree, once you feel as if you’re starting to walk on your own 2 feet again, you get dragged back by the rope, and here you are, back to square one. Instead, let’s go of the rope, untie, live your life, enjoy every moment of it. I once heard of a quote from an elderly person and if they regretted anything in their life, they said yes, when asked for the reason why, the elderly person said that they were never living in the moment, instead they were focusing on the past and because of that, they felt as if they wasted their life away.

If you did something you are ashamed of, don’t ignore it, don’t pretend you never did it, but let it fuel you up to be a better and more wiser person. Let it guide you into the right direction and when possible to do so, turn the bad into good, turn the wrong into the right and turn the negativity into positivity. Once step at a time, it’s not a race, you do it at your own pace, you’ll get there when you feel like it.

Isak Dinesen - you can’t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future

Have a great day.

Math :)

X

Colonial Africa

Hey hey people I'm looking for a FICTION book set in Colonial Africa. I've read Heart of Darkness recently and I've read Things Fall Apart maaany times. I'm interested in that Victorian exploration style, I've read enough anti-colonial literature to last a lifetime and now fancy seeing what the Europeans were thinking as they pursued it.

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚
