I re-watched Out of Africa last night and kept thinking about the environmental damage.

Out of Africa is the 1985 movie with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. It's based on the real-life experiences of Karen Blixen, a Danish woman who attempted coffee-farming in what is now Kenya from about 1915-1930.

So of course it's colonialism out the wazoo. That is touched on a bit in the film, by the same characters who are doing it! The Redford character takes rich people out to hunt big game, for fuck's sakes.

I didn't even think of all this when I first saw the film in the 80s or even on later re-watches. But NOW, watching them clear the forest to make way for coffee plants makes me want to flip a table. There is some attempt to re-direct water but it doesn't work.

Ultimately the whole farm fails and she has to go back to Denmark. She tries to get some land set aside for the local people but you just know they are gonna get fucked over. The farm was developed into a suburb almost immediately after she left.

And now here we are and we know what a catastrophe all that was. Not just because of romantic notions about the wilderness and a lost way of life, but because that ecosystem is gone, forever. It won't sustain life on the same level again for thousands if not millions of years.

So, great. πŸ˜”
