Possible Complications with laparoscopic bilateral inguinal surgery

Scheduled for a laparoscopic bilateral inguinal surgery in a couple weeks. I have been researching it a lot and obviously can’t avoid reading about risks. Injury to the testicles, inability to urinate , injury to stomach organs etc. I’m 46 in decent health with no health issues. I know there are always risks but wondering anyone have experience with this type surgery?

Why I chose scrotal instead of inguinal for my orchi

I almost went with inguinal due to posts I've seen on these subreddits before about how inguinal has a lesser risk of bad hematomas.

But then the surgeon on the day before surgery had another talk with me and listed these as pros for scrotal:

  1. quicker recovery (one less incision)
  2. less problems walking up stairs (due to the localization of the incision)
  3. less of a risk of other tissues being damaged, i.e. inguinal surgery could accidentally cut the intestines but scrotal is localized far away from the intestines
  4. lesser duration of surgery (15 minutes instead of 30-45)
  5. it's done more often than inguinal so they have more experience with it
  6. hematomas can still be well enough prevented by using compressive material in the area (i.e. a 2nd layer of underwear), and using a sitting ring cushion for 4 days of a bad hematoma is not the end of the world; even if a bad hematoma did need to be treated via surgery, it would not be life-threatening
  7. the incision scar will not be visible after SRS

I didn't intend to make a last day change of mind but I got convinced. In the end I did not get any hematomas, just a bad inguinal phlegmonous infection (not at the surgery site but higher up), which could've happened after inguinal surgery too. Overall I'm happy and figured I'd pass on my knowledge.

Can Inguinal hernia repair have any major impact on fertility or testicles?

I’m 18 and my doctor found out that I have a small inguinal hernia about a month ago. There’s no bulge, just a pressure/mild discomfort feeling after working out or any strenuous activity. I have an appointment with a surgeon who specializes in hernia repair next week.. but I am worried that doing the inguinal hernia repair can possibly negatively affect fertility (im scared that the surgery can damage the sensitive area) as I am a still pretty young getting this. Am I overthinking this? Is everything going to be fine and it’s not as bad?

Pain/ discomfort experienced for 6-8 weeks in lower left abdomen/groin. Possible inguinal hernia?

Hi i am new and just after some advise The past 2 months i have been experiencing discomfort in the lower left groin aswell as abdomen. I notice it mostly in the lower left of the abdomen aswell as the groin near the pelvic bone. The pain/discomfort changes on a daily basis as some days it will be a dull pain or others it can feel more of a bloating discomfort or burning. It can feel like a bubble in the pelvis which inflates. It can also move to the right of the groin down to the testicles. My pubic area feels as though it is sore or inflamed, I have noticed a feeling of being bloated more often and notice I have been constipated more. Recently it has travelled to my lower back, it is not excruciating but I can notice it is there. Some days It goes completly and other days I notice it all day, i feel as though it is an inguinal hernia and I am worried about the possibility of surgery. Do these symptoms point to a hernia?? Where is best to get this diagnosed as my GP very rarely offer appointments face to face, but thought a&e would not be great either.

Thanks

Incarcerated Inguinal Hernia question

I'm due to have surgery next week for 2 hernias: An Umbilical hernia and an Incarcerated Inguinal hernia. The latter has descended (intestine/fat?) into my scrotum and it is now twice its normal size and a bit uncomfortable... I assume they will somehow push that back into my abdomen before applying the mesh? The Dr asked if I am able to push it in myself and I said I was originally but there was now too much in there to push it back in.

I wanted to ask him about this but he had some sort of emergency come up and left abruptly so I never got the chance.

Any advice from former patients would be greatly appreciated and thank you!

Pain in inguinal area? Like pulling or tugging?

Been looking but no one talks about the pain or discomfort in the inguinal area. It's like lower abdomen by the hips/groin.

I just got mine done yesterday (I know way too soon to worry) but can't find ANYTHING online about this. I've been searching for hours and all I can find is people talking about the long term pain syndrome.

So you know when they shoot the lidocaine in the vas deferens and it hurts all the way in your groin? For everyone else did that take a few days for that pain to go away?

I'm afraid to move, sneeze, or cough because everytime I do it hurts. The boys are ok it's just the groin area that is no where near where the procedure was done. Do I need to move around and stretch more? It's like he tugged too hard and the tubes are pulled too tight. This is on both sides. Thanks.

Inguinal hernia - am I going to be out for months?

So I had a really horrible throat infection recently and because I coughed so much I'm pretty sure I've got a hernia now. Obviously I'm going to the docs to check it out, so no need to tell me to do that.

But I'm interested in anyone else that's had a hernia and how long you were out from skating. Since I started 6 months ago I've got very into skating and it's become my main exercise. The prospect of being out for months feels shitty, but as a 39yo I'm willing to accept it if that's what's needed. I'm just kinda hoping it won't be that bad but understand it probably will be 😭

UPDATE - I've talked to the doctor and been to the hospital. They basically said they think it's minor and they're sending a letter to my doctor to recommend an ultrasound, other than that they're doing nothing and just told me to not exert myself. So not really sure how to make sure it doesn't get worse tbh πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

Bi lateral inguinal hernia repair two years ago. Things suddenly got awful.

Hey everyone. 32yo male here. I had an open, bi lateral inguinal hernia repair done two years ago. 4 meshes implanted. Recovery was rough but I learned to live with soreness after exertion etc. Problem is, a little over a week ago, I noticed much more discomfort than normal. Like I couldn’t take care of it with a hot water bottle and ibuprofen. So I decided to keep an eye on it and it’s gotten worse. On my left side, where the mesh is, there is a hard lump(s) and the entire inguinal canal is very tender. Right side no hard lump but again at the site of the mesh there is swelling and pain/discomfort. You know the feeling, it’s just like before I had the procedure but somehow the pain is worse. My groin/lower abdomen seems β€œstiff” not really swollen just kind of tight? And the discomfort is unbearable, like standing sucks, laying down is worse etc.

I made an apt with my GP, who gave me a referral to a surgeon without any fuss. The problem is, the surgeon isn’t taking it seriously at all. I am in worse pain then before the surgery, have new hard lumps (!?) under and around the mesh and swelling and pain around both sites. Not tI mention running a fever (101, drops with Tylenol but steady for two days) He took a cursory look at it and started β€œmonologuing” to his students about the lymphatic system and that he thinks I have swollen lymph nodes? I was so confused, he knows I had the repair done two years ago. I stated clearly what I was experiencing and what I was worried about. He told me he wanted to wait a few weeks? I basically had to beg him to order an ultrasound, which he said he would. But I’m so confused.

I had a lot of trouble getting the initial diagnoses two years ago, lots of trips to gp, surgeon, e.r etc. they ordered CT, didn’t show anything. Doc said it didn’t look like one etc. finally a sympathetic NP ordered an ultrasound for testicular torsion (because they had already sternly ruled out hernia) and while doing it the Tech asked β€œthey aren’t concerned with the massive hernias?” After which I finally got a surgery etc. I’m just dumbfounded as to why it’s so hard to diagnose? It displays much more prominently when standing (as do most) and I try to make sure to point out the (obvious to me) β€œtrouble areas” you know the bulging areas on my inguinal canal, now hard and lumpy under the mesh.( those lumps and bulges were not present post surgery until this last week)

After the surgeon told me US could take a week or two, and the pain got

Inguinal Hernia for 20 years

So, yeah, I've had an inguinal/scrotal hernia for +20 years.

I was 12 years old when I started noticing a bump in my left lower abdominal area, very close the penis. I told my dad about it. He took me to see a doctor who immediately wanted to make surgery. My dad had a disk hernia many years ago an it was hell for him, the surgery was very complicated so he didn't want me to get surgery so young. So we waited...

The doctor advised me not to make any sports, but I had always been very active. At first I listened to the doctor, but little by little I kept playing and exercising. Slowly, it kept growing and reached my scrotum, but it never hurt. It reached the current size by the time I was around 18. I'm 33 now.

I have always been able to retract it / push it in at will. Sometimes it "stays in" for hours, sometimes only seconds. At night, it goes "in" by itself and in the morning it takes sometime to descend. I describe it as if during the night (or the time I lay down and gravity helps), the abdominal wall heals a little bit and prevents it from descending for a few hours.

It has never hurt or made anything uncomfortable. Or at least not in the hernia by itself. I don't know how to explain it, but I'll try.

Some days it feels like it does descend, but not "through the regular path", and it hurts a little, but strangely it hurts in the left middle abdominal area. I have to lay down for a few minutes, then I stand up and then it's all OK.

I am quite active. A few years ago, before getting children I used to run full 42km marathons. I have a six-pack. I can do ab trainings, quite demanding. It has never affected my sexual life, nor my fertility, I have 2 healthy beautiful little girls. I recently had a vasectomy, 3 weeks ago. The healing was a little bit affected by the hernia descending all the time, but now I am 98% recovered.

I have only had sex with 1 woman my whole life, and it doesn't seem to bother her. I have asked her and she says it does not bother her, she could be lying about it but I know when she lies and she seems to be honest about this. Everytime we have sex, I try to push the hernia in before starting, but many times it descends during the session. I don't feel it, but I get uncomfortable because of the possiblity that my wife would be uncomfortable with it.

To be honest, the only reasons why I would have surgery now, is because of the aesthetics, because of the above stated reasons, and because I realized I had accepted to

Should I be concerned about a popping sensation after inguinal hernia repair surgery?

Hey everyone,

Last Friday I got a surgery for an indirect inguinal hernia using a mesh. The first few days were rough but at this point I am walking pretty well and I just feel generalized weakness of my abdominal muscles and some pressure because of swelling. This evening I took a shower and as I was drying my legs off I felt a pop from the surgery site.

I don’t have any new pain at all, however I am still somewhat concerned. Is this concern valid?

Inguinal/Femoral Hernia or Endo

very random, but. ive struggled with what i thought was an inguinal hernia for years now. the lump is present at times the pain is often there. but then it goes away. but i have consisten sharp pain if i sneeze a lot or something like that. but something that always occurs is extreme sharpshooting pain in the inguinal femoral area right before and also during my period (menstrual bleed). its so bad sometimes it hurts to sit down or move my leg upward. i also can feel increased pain if im constipated or if i have to pee really badly. this is really odd to me as the pain amplifies during my period. i also only have one ovary and its on the side where the pain is.

i also previously had a CT scan done for my what i thought was hernia and of course nothing showed up probably because when i lay down it disappears and is small.

Im just curious if anyone else has ever dealt with this or noticed anything like this in themselves. thank yall!

I have had an inguinal hernia for many years as well as upper GI symptoms, such as bloating, belching, loss of appetite. In general these symptoms are usually caused by other things but just curious to see if anyone has experienced this. I could imagine the small bowel getting pinched and slowing digestion, causing upper GI symptoms, but I don't know if there's any merit to this at all.

What could be causing me sharp pain "inside" in my lower left abdomen? I have a bilateral inguinal hernias, I'm pretty constipated recently, and I have a MILDLY enlarged prostate and moderately distended bladder. Of these, which can cause sharp pain?

No Medication- Vitamins: Daily, Turmeric, Prostate Health, Omega 3 Fish oils, Vitamin D2

My insurance is being wonky right now so I can't talk to my doc till the 1st of February.

Out of all those issues listed, what can be causing me a SHARP pain on my lower left abdomen? I'm assuming my hernia and constipation (as it happens when I push- more- Yes, I know I need to not push as much as possible). But could it be my prostate messing with my tubes or something? The pain sometimes goes to the left side of my penis.

What's the most likely cause of this pain?

Really worried about inguinal hernia surgery

Basically, I have a small inguinal hernia on my lower left side. I saw a surgeon who does a lot of hernia surgeries and he said that he would use mesh to repair the hernia. I wasn't worried until I started researching and seeing so many negative stories about chronic side effects :/ I'm a woman in her mid-20s who is really active (run, hike/backpack, rock climb, bike) and apparently it's uncommon for women to have the kind of hernia that I have.

Has anyone had a good or normal experience getting mesh hernia repair? Or other women who've had an inguinal hernia? I don't even have frequent symptoms anymore so I'm wondering if I should even get the surgery soon or not. Tbh all the horrible stories are making me question if it's worth it.

Inguinal hernia surgery - I need advice

Hello. I've had inguinal hernia on the right side for two years now and on the left side for a year. I had my laparoscopic surgery with mesh implanted 9 days ago. I'm worried about swollen spermatic cord on the right side. At first it was kinda painful but now after a week it's just hard and sensitive.

I know swelling is normal but I'm worried because under fingers I can track it/feel it whole way to the place where hernia was and I guess now mesh is. Left side is normal but right side is swollen. I'm not sure should I seek medical attention or no?

My father had the same surgery two years ago and he had the swelling for 4 weeks and it's still painful to the touch.

Can mesh overlap with spermatic cord and cause problems? How often is it and how does it manifest?

Thank you.

Update: everything is okay and in its place. Swelling is normal and it should pass in the next month or so. Pain/stinging stopped. Doctor said I shouldn't sit more than 15-20 minutes at the time and that sitting was probably the cause of pain.
