A list of puns related to "Historian Of Ideas"
I see this concept repeated over and over on right wing platforms, and frankly it sounds like propaganda to me, however I am willing to at least look at the historical evidence for such a phenomenon. Can you guys point me to any credible respected historians that actually put any stock into this?
Or am I right to dismiss it as a boogeyman/placeholder for anything right wing zealots donβt like?
Too bad the crows got into it.
As we know, JS felt that if a man is doing overall good, its okay to lie or cheat a little to get there.Β There are literally countless examples of it in his life.Β He believed in lying for the Lord...a little dishonesty is justified because he actually was living a higher law, he was doing good.Β Β Its all over in his life:Β there was no first vision, no golden plates, no angelic visions, he admitted he was seeing nothing in the seer stone, he knew the Book of Abraham was not written on those papri, he knew he was boinking lots of women and calling it plural marriage, he knew he was boinking other women he wasn't even married to but he was a prophet, so concubines were okay.Β There are literally dozens of examples of joseph "lying for the Lord".Β Β Nephi committed murder for the greater good---thats how joseph thought, its what he believed.
I think this a lasting legacy, the DNA is still here in the church today.Β The q15 likely know there were no golden plates...at least uchdorf knows.Β Β they likely know the bofm is a JS production, but they think its doing good so its okay to lie a little about it's conception.Β Β I see active mormons today doing little things all the time that are dishonest or fraudulent, but because they think they are in the "one true church" and being guided by the Spirit to bring about God's Kingdom on earth, its justified.Β Β Momrons cheating onΒ taxes is okay if you have more money to pay your tithing, etc.Β Β They look down upon everyone else and excuse their behavior.
Been thinking a lot lately about this hypocrisy that we all see in card carrying mormons.Β Β I think it started with JS.Β Β Rant over.
I regularly get into debates with a 30βs basement dwelling philosophy degree history buff - I donβt want to give any specific identifying things he studies, but most people who have been subjected to his long history monologues use the term genius. But he has recently taken a βrace realistβ approach. He can whip out statistics and generally sound incredibly intelligent. In order to combat this I need to know the whole picture. I need to be able to point to race history in an all encompassing way that will not allow him to philosophically talk circles around me. Can you help?
I believe it is a good time to put all of reddit's ideas and theories to work. This is a place to express one's thoughts and ideas to speculate possible events that just might happen. Then to test them out IRL.
r/prediction is my idea for a sub-reddit. I am unsure as to what to do to make this sub-reddit real and could use some guidance. Thank you.
Iβm Robyn Metcalfe, a food historian and futurist, with a concentration in the history of urban food markets, particularly in Western Europe during the 19th century. Iβve written and spoken about everything from Londonβs 19th-century meat markets to the evolution of American livestock breeding practices, to the deceptive simplicity of the peanut butter sandwich. Iβm also director of Food City, a nonprofit organization that explores the way technology shapes our relationship with food, and the author of Food Routes: Growing Bananas in Iceland and Other Tales from the Logistics, in which I explore an often-overlooked aspect of the global food system: how food moves from producer to consumer.
Why, you may be asking, does a historian think about the future of food? Because it's all about context β having the knowledge about how we got here as we think about the future. Iβm here from 12 β 2 pm EDT to field any and all questions about the past and future of our food system and how technology is reshaping our relationship to food.

Edit: Thanks for your thoughtful questions, everyone. Iβm signing off for now, but may hop back on later to see if I can answer a few more. This was great fun.....
Hello everyone! I am Dr Megan Hunt, Teaching Fellow in American History at the University of Edinburgh. My interests are in the African American civil rights movement, and the American South more generally, as presented in educational materials and popular culture - particularly Hollywood film. I have written on films such as Selma, The Help, Mississippi Burning, and To Kill a Mockingbird, and am currently working on a book about civil rights, race, and religion in Hollywood cinema. I have also explored how civil rights is taught in the US and the UK, and the significance of educational standards to public memory of social activism. I am happy to answer questions on the movement itself or its representation in cinema/television and schools. I will be back to answer questions at 3pm GMT.
EDIT: Thank you so much for all of your questions! And I am very sorry that I have not been able to answer them all during the AMA.
