... keep reading on reddit β‘Hey everyone!
In about 3 weeks a then 10 week old havanese will move in with me. Now I read a couple of times that they are hard to potty train and that they are supposed to walk to the designated spot themselves. I have some space I can use in front of my door (apartment complex second floor) where I put this artificial grass for her to go potty on. But Iβd like Someone with approximate the same size dog to tell me: how often did you take them out? Is every hour too late? Or should I cut it down to half hour intervals (with after sleep/eat/drink/training/play also included)? Thank you so much already!
I really love the is breed and what Iβve read is that theyβre a lazy breed but I want to know if this is true. The internet is not always accurate on dog breeds. The internet says 30min a day. Is this accurate?
Whatβs the best trick youβve taught your havi?
My 4 year old Ollie has always peed like a girl ever since he was a puppy. He just squats and never lifts his leg to pee but has no problem lifting his leg when another dog sniffs him. Do other males do this?
Our Hava just turned 6 months. At 4 months she suddenly lost interest in the food the breeder suggested.
We ended up changing the food, and she devoured it. We thought , oh, we are on the right path. But then it happened again.
So we changed foods again. She devoured the new one. Then lost interest in a few weeks. We are still on this one, but now we add a little chicken broth with some toppers and she slowly will start eating .
Edit: Foods we tried- Wellness Complete Grain Free , Blue Freedom, now we on Royal Canin Puppy.
Any advice?
Basically the title! I wanna hear you guys' experiences in dog sports with your Hav, regardless of the type of sport. Do you do dog sports with your Hav? What do you do? How does your dog do? Wanna share stories or pictures? Lay em on me!
My puppy Annie is 5 months, so not old enough to formally compete in much, but we're doing training in pre-agility (ground work and simple obstacles without jumps or weaves), CAT/Fast CAT, trick dog (working on an intermediate title!) and conformation. Annie is my first Havanese and I never expected a toy breed dog to be SO intelligent, brave and athletic!
Although she excels at pretty much everything I try her in, agility is definitely her doggy life's calling. When we pull up to the agility gym she loses her mind with excitement. She's a bit "famous" at her dog school because she's always the smallest one in agility, but is also usually the fastest and the first one to try out a scary new piece of equipment!
We do conformation practice in addition to normal obedience to balance out the other fast-moving performance sports, but she definitely tolerates conformation practice at best ;) still, it's good socialization for her to learn to be handled by strangers and not freak out with Havanese-y joy from the attention, so we'll probably stick with it a while. I'm looking forward to entering at least a show or two with her as a novice puppy over the summer!
Here's a little gif of Annie launching herself at her favorite agility trainer after a very exciting tunnel success! Sorry it's a bit potato quality but you get the idea :)
Maybe you guys are like me and always wondered if the weird thing your pup does is a "Havanese thing" or if your dog is just an oddball ;) I thought it would be fun for us to post the weird things our dogs do, and others could respond if their dogs do it too!
The things my puppy does that I've wondered about are:
unrolling the toilet paper like a cat then shredding it
knocking down shampoo bottles on the edge of the tub
wildly digging out her sleep spot in the blankets then flopping down and falling asleep instantly
howling at things or people when she is excited by them
Feel free to share your own or chime in if your Hav does these things too!
Hello, r/Havanese!
I come seeking advice. My wife, 10 year old son, and I are thinking about getting a Havanese puppy from a reputable local breeder.
A bit about us for context: we've owned a dog before (a wonderful lab who died 3 years ago). I am home a lot, and my wife works from home all the time. Our son is mature and responsible and is looking forward to doing his part to raise a puppy.
Based on our research, there's a lot that we love about the breed--its cheerful, playful, loving demeanor; its adorable looks; its snuggly size.
But we do have a few concerns.
I guess what I'm asking is this. Do Havanese pick a 'special person,' and if so, what does that mean in practice? How does this favortism show up in the dog's everyday behavior?
I really appreciate any thoughts you are willing to share!
Weβve had our havanese pup for about five months now, and every single car ride weβve gone on sheβs puked in the car! She shakes and gets incredibly nervous and scared. Anyone else deal with this, or have any advice! Thank you!
Hi, 5 month old Havanese here. Sheβs crate trained to sleep in crate, couple of times she woke up at 6:00AM, but lately last month I come down at 6:45 and she was waiting quietly in the crate.
I take her out to pee at 10:30pm every night to empty bladder.
A few nights ago, she was barking 5:00AM. Me, thinking she drank some water later the previous night, and not wanting her to wake up my wife and kids, went down to let her out. She didnβt really seem interested to pee, she did eventually but it wasnβt what woke her up.
Last night, same thing but 4:45AM.
Iβm going to let her cry it out tonight, already warned the family and neighbors because she barks loudly.
Any suggestions ?
Hi all! My little guy is 10 months old and I have an appointment to get him neutered this month, to my husbandβs dismay. I know this is a controversial subject to some, I know all the pros and cons of neutering and it is recommended (but not required) by our both our breeder and veterinarian. But, my husband asks me daily to cancel the appointment and I am starting to second guess myself. For those that have neutered, did you see any good or bad side effects? For those that opted not to, do you need to limit his activities like dog parks, grooming, doggy daycare, etc? Thanks!
