Psychopaths of our modern time according to Hare Psychopathy Checklist

The Robert Hare Psychopathy is considered by clinicians and researchers worldwide to be the 'gold standard' in assessing psychopathy. It is a complex clinical tool that is only used by experts in the field. It is also considered to be the most accurate predictor of violent behavior that we have. Therefore, it is also being used to assess the probability of a criminal re-offending as well as determining the length of sentence and whether or not treatment is advised.

Clifford Olson - 38/40

Brian Dugan - 38/40

Does anyone have any other information on how serial killers have scored on this checklist?

In America, scoring 30 or over earns you the psychopath label. In the UK it’s 25 or over.

Robert Hare and the Psychopathy Checklist

I actually did not first recognize that something was deeply wrong by first investigating Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I first came to it after reading more generally about people who were entirely without empathy, because I felt like that was the most obvious, and easily identifiable trait of my parents. This led me to Robert Hare's research on psychopathy in the criminal justice system.

Neither of my parents have ever been arrested or in jail, but I had noticed, throughout my life, that they have very violent/sexual tendencies that resemble those of criminals. Also, just the way that they think, the way that they can turn on/off certain personality traits in order to manipulate people, and how they avoid suspicion of things that they are doing straight-out in plain sight, reminded me more of criminal behavior than "narcissists", which I had very little understanding of. (My idea of a Narc was someone like Gilderoy Lockhart or Kim Kardashian, which didn't resonate with me at all, at the time.)

I read Robert Hare's book "Without Conscience", and a few other things he's done. One of his major contributions was something called the "Psychopathy Checklist", which made me realize that, not only were my parents "not normal", but probably also deeply dangerous. The checklist can't, on its own, be used to make a diagnosis by a layperson, but, certainly, I realized, if my parents seem to share the vast majority, if not all, of these traits, then something is really, seriously, wrong. This is the list:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopathy_Checklist#Items

I choose to share, because maybe this will help other people, who are still struggling to figure out what exactly was off about your parents, and wondering how dangerous they can be. After investigating current models of psychopathy, I felt like I was better able to keep myself safe from my parents, both mentally (in that I could start recognizing abusive and manipulative people and inner voices better), and physically (in that this was a big part of finding my strength for No Contact). Eventually, I learned that "psychopathy" is basically, at its root, NPD, and found this support group and other resources.

A word of warning, though, this checklist was recently the subject of a very popular book by Jon Ronson called "The Psychopath Test". I can't tell you what to do, but I found this book incredibly triggering and angering, and this book has been slammed by Robert Hare and other people in criminal j

The Hare Psychopathy Checklist. Let's see if this fits someone we know.

GLIB and SUPERFICIAL CHARM β€” The tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick, and verbally facile. Psychopathic charm is not in the least shy, self-conscious, or afraid to say anything. Β A psychopath never gets tongue-tied. They have freed themselves from the social conventions about taking turns in talking, for example.

GRANDIOSE SELF-WORTH β€” A grossly inflated view of one’s abilities and self-worth, self-assured, opinionated, cocky, a braggart. Psychopaths are arrogant people who believe they are superior human beings.

NEED FOR STIMULATION or PRONENESS TO BOREDOM β€” An excessive need for novel, thrilling, and exciting stimulation; taking chances and doing things that are risky. Psychopaths often have low self-discipline in carrying tasks through to completion because they get bored easily. They fail to work at the same job for any length of time, for example, or to finish tasks that they consider dull or routine.

PATHOLOGICAL LYING β€” Can be moderate or high; in moderate form, they will be shrewd, crafty, cunning, sly, and clever; in extreme form, they will be deceptive, deceitful, underhanded, unscrupulous, manipulative, and dishonest.

CONNING AND MANIPULATIVENESS β€” The use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain; distinguished from Item #4 in the degree to which exploitation and callous ruthlessness is present, as reflected in a lack of concern for the feelings and suffering of one’s victims.

LACK OF REMORSE OR GUILT β€” A lack of feelings or concern for the losses, pain, and suffering of victims; a tendency to be unconcerned, dispassionate, cold-hearted, and non-empathic. This item is usually demonstrated by a disdain for one’s victims.

SHALLOW AFFECT β€” Emotional poverty or a limited range or depth of feelings; interpersonal coldness in spite of signs of open gregariousness.

CALLOUSNESS and LACK OF EMPATHY β€” A lack of feelings toward people in general; cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate, and tactless.

PARASITIC LIFESTYLE β€” An intentional, manipulative, selfish, and exploitative financial dependence on others as reflected in a lack of motivation, low self-discipline, and inability to begin or complete responsibilities.

POOR BEHAVIORAL CONTROLS β€” Expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression, and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper; acting hastily.

PROMISCUOUS SEXUAL BEHAVIOR β€” A variety of brief, superficial relations, numerous affairs, and an indiscrimina

Psychopathy Checklist?!?

A few months ago there was an episode that landed me in jail and I had to be present in front of a judge. The judge decided I have to do community service for 6 months and attend mandatory appointments with a psychologist.

The state-appointed psychologist is more of a bureaucrat than anything. He gave me a bunch of "personality assessment" questionnaires to fill in and I couldn't help but laugh at some of these. They were supposed to find out if I'm narcissistic or psychopathic or borderline or what have you. Among the questions asked were gems like "Are you willing to step on other people to achieve your goals?" and "Do you sometimes feel like other people are just too ignorant to understand you?" and "Do you lie frequently?".

And I'm there thinking: even if the answer is "Yes", who the hell would answer "Yes" to these questions?!

How do people even get diagnosed through these checklists? Why be honest? Don't they know they're supposed to answer "No" to questions that hint at hurting / taking advantage of / belittling other people, while throwing a bone here and there not to make it too obvious? Sure, I agree I need constant stimulation. Sure, I definitely agree I get bored easily. What? No! I absolutely disagree some people who get ripped off had it coming. No, I absolutely disagree looking out for myself is my top priority! Come on, we live in a society...

LOL.
