A list of puns related to "Genroku"
Hi,
Can anyone clarify the difference between Angel's lower (i.e. non Genroku) Hanafuda. I am finding both the first set illustrated (with the bound/sealed/overlapped edges to the cards that would be expected) for sale on the net (), but together with the second set (with raw edges, as per a cheap no-brand set). It seems to me that the boxes for these are exactly the same. Is one a newer version or what?
Also, the third pack shown seems to have slipped into the range. These seem to have the sealed/overlapped edges.
Can anybody clarify?

Everything in the title. Just finished the show and this is bugging me.
I actually strongly dislike theater as a medium, but this anime all about a Japanese oral tradition comedic theater performance medium and its endurance over time totally entranced me. It takes place over the course of the 20th century and follows a small set of performers who keep rakugo alive and thriving through drastic Japanese era changes. The story begins with a man called Yotaro who is released from prison on good behavior in the 60s/70s, determined to become a rakugo performer after he witnesses the reigning rakugo master perform at his prison. He begs to be the master's apprentice, and the first cour of the anime focuses on that master's own apprenticeship and growth as an artist, largely around the WW2 era.
I would say it's primarily a drama, but it builds in lots of other elements since it is a show all about storytelling and the performers tell many different kinds of stories. Another core element of the show is family - arguably the main character, Bon, is abandoned by his family because he is unable to perform geisha dances due to his ruined leg. So a lot of the story focuses on the foster family that nurtures him and his own efforts to pay it forward, sort of, once he is an adult. This plot line continues basically through the present day, where Yotaro takes over as protagonist (and explores many similar themes from a new perspective).
I just want to flag that I cried during 8 of the second cour's 12 episodes and was shocked by how well the story builds in emotional climaxes. I don't want to say a whole lot more in this post because the best parts are spoilers, but the series really offers a lot to many different kinds of viewers, IMO. Much like the rakugo performers it depicts, the show has tremendous range, and quietly flexes its adaptability. I do want to mention that the series has unexpected visual flair. A lot of the direction is realist - at first, you'll think it's just a historical period piece. But rakugo performers regularly broach the fantastic realm...
Interested in only volumes 7 and 8, the last 2 volumes I need for my set. Name your price.
Thank you!
A while ago I watched what I think was the first two episodes of Showa Genro and ended up delaying watching it.
Today I just watched the first hour and a half long episode again and I have a few questions.
Sangatsu no Lion is my favorite anime and when I tell someone that, I usually get recommended Showa Genro. Both are heavy dramas, it seems, involving a similarly niche part of Japanese entertainment/culture.
The first episode was extremely heavy with the rakugo, though. I have to admit that I didn't get much out of those scenes. During them, I had a nagging feeling that I was missing a ton of the enjoyment of the rakugo by just reading them through subs, and not understand the language and word play that was happening.
This is all to ask, is the rest of the show this consistently heavy with long rakugo scenes, of the artists in action, or is it slightly more reserved, as I viewed Sangatsu was with shogi?
I also will ask, is this pacing of the show as tedious as the first episode makes it out to be?
I have to admit it does have a similar feeling to Sangatsu, in the fact that it has quite a bit of covert exposition, reading the faces and reactions of characters and their demeanor and if I strictly stuck by the 3 episode rule with Sangatsu, I most likely would have dropped it. Is the pacing just slow, or is the show seemingly not for me?
Thanks!
Heyooo!! I was wondering if the Rakugo performances from shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu are based off of real Stories? Also, are there transcripts for any of the performances?? I really wanna watch real performances of the stories from the anime.
Hey guys, you may or may not have seen my review on March Comes in Like a Lion, but I recommend you check that out if you havenβt. A friend of mine enjoyed my review and suggested I make more, so that leads up to now. I encourage discussions or even comments about my reviews since I love talking about anime! I hope you enjoy
My summary: Shouwa Genroku follows Yotaro, an ex conman who recently got released from prison and seeks a new life in the form of the Rakugo profession. (Rakugo performers and basically one man story tellers that take on the persona of the many characters in their stories).
Plot: To be honest with you, when I read the description of the show I wasnβt really interested, but since it was recommended to me I tried watching it, and boy am I glad I did. The show may be seen as slow to a few people since it is a drama, but it makes up for it in the amazing storytelling and character development. I was amazing seeing the relationships develop in the story and the consequences of each characters actions unfold in their daily lifeβs
Characters: for the the first season Yotaro is not the main focus, the whole first season is a story being retold by his Rakugo master Yakumo. The characters are greatly voice acted especially Sukeroku who I felt a deep bond with as his story went on. These characters seem very very real and it made me forget that I was even watching an anime. The story telling that each character performs isnβt just a background piece, the story telling blends with the character and more of the character is revealed through their storytelling. By the end of the story I felt a piece of my heart ripped away as the story ended and I had the leave the characters behind.
Music: I enjoyed the jazz ost as it really fit with the era that the story was being told. Jazz has a special place in my heart since one of my first animeβs was Cowboy Bebop (cowboys in space with jazz). The music was also very calming especially the ED for season 1. The openings and endings have to be some of my favorite as they are very unique from any other op I have heard. The only sin these OPs and EDs have committed is not being on Spotify (insert sad face here).
Art: thereβs nothing really special to say about the art style in the main portion of the show. The real kicker comes with the story tel
... keep reading on reddit β‘I watched Rakugo a bit ago and it was good overall but I LOVED season one. The character interactions between the main trio really pulled me in in a way that parts of season two couldnβt. Iβm a really big fan of more character driven drama-y series, in general less into action but never completely opposed to anything.
Most of the other posts Iβve seen asking about Rakugo recommend 3-Gatsu no Lion which Iβve already seen so hoping for other reccs
Some of my other favorites are The Tatami Galaxy Cowboy Bebop Scumβs Wish
Hopefully post isnβt too vague, thanks in advance for your recommendations!
What a masterpiece. To me this anime is a celebration of life.It beautifully portrays regret, failure, jealousy, love, joy and forgiveness.I highly recommend this anime it's truly a wonderful experience.
Just finished and was refreshed by it being adult-centered, complex, and a bit more refined than most of the other shows I watch. It isnβt a very well-known show, but if you have seen it what other shows are comparable/recommended?
If iβm not mistaken thereβs 31 chapters but everywhere online the translated manga is only released up to chapter 11. Whatβs a good place to read the rest?
Some other examples: Uchouten Kazoku, Chihayafuru, xxxHolic and Utakoi.
Hi I don't have internet where I am staying now and have to come into cafe where I don't have much time and battery to do a lot of searching.
I have been blown away by Wave, Listen to me and it reminds me a bit of Showa Genroku Rakugo. I never realized I would be interested in shows set in more mundane circumstances but these have really been a breath of fresh air.
So if you have any recommendations, help me make use of my limited wifi time. :)

Hey all, with this post, I'd like to see if there is some interest in a Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu rewatch starting around the 18th February.
Why you should watch Souwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and its sequel is about the lives of a few Rakugo perfomers, their relationship with each other and the artform of rakugo itself.
It's an amazing drama series with believable and loveable characters, mature and captivating writing, absolutely brilliant directing and solid animation brought by the people who made visual materpieces like Fate/stay night and Pupa, Studio Deen. No, seriously though, I have no complaints about the visual presentation of Rakugo Shinjuu.
Also, do not fear if you don't know anything about rakugo or if you have no interest in it. I bet that at least 90% of the watchers had no idea what rakugo was beforehand and yet most of them enjoyed it. It certainly helps that the perfomances are really masterfully put on screen with some of the best voice acting in the medium.
Despite having a dedicated cult following, high rankings of multiple anime databanks, I think it is still underwatched to some degree and the first season is already about 2 years old.
Here is one [WT!] by /u/Tuplet and another one by /u/Kaminly to have additonal insight about the show and its appeal.
One episode per day should make the most sense for 25 days (13 episodes +12 episodes). I also highly encourage rewatchers to start the first episode with the special director's cut, the length might be too much for newbies, especially considering how the normal first episode is already about 45 minutes long.
I will make a poll next week asking about which time the threads should go up. Also, please comment already here if I should tag you when the first thread goes up, if it does at all, but I am hopeful that the rewatch will be successful.
Also, this would be my first time hosting a rewatch, despite being active here for years, so I am grateful for a bit of lenience and a few tips to improve things.
Thank you for your attent

This anime was a slow burn, but in terms of heartwarming and powerful emotional dramas, this one tipped the scales for me. Iβd really like to find another one similar to this. If you havenβt seen it, I canβt recommend it enough. It had me gasping at times when the story turned in directions And the character development is top notch. It had my crying on numerous occasions and the art was downright gorgeous at times.
I thought both seasons of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu were amazing!! And a very different change of pace compared to most anime, it reminded me of Sangatsu no Lion's style of directing. But, after so many plot twists, I'm left a bit dumbfounded. I'm not confused about the story itself, since it was well conveyed, but I do have a few inquiries.
I was confused about the whole reconciliation scene in the balcony between Konatsu and Yakumo. When he asked her if she "made her mind" and she said "yes", what do they mean? Made her mind about what? Forgiving him? Rakugo? Did she actually know the truth about her parents death? I didn't understand what this reconciliation was about, I know it's about her anger towards him, but what made her give in? Also why did he chose to accept her as an apprentice now when he refused in the past?
Can someone explain me the ending for the second season, with the island of bamboo and Rakugo clothes in the ocean, it looks like a representation of a tale but I don't really know.
Is Shinnosuke really Konatsu and Yakumo's child? Not about hating or liking it, I just simply didn't see it coming, though it made a bit of sense when she "explained" it in the end, and his design clearly resembles a mix between Sukeroku and Yakumo, but honestly it just seemed like she simply hated him mostly and had a father-daughter type of relationship. But it really is a crazy solution the author had to actually have a person with exclusively the DNA of the main trio: Sukeroku, Miyokichi and Yakumo. I just find it hard to picture them with that kind of relationship really, story-wise.
Also, did Yakumo know it was his child? Was that the reason he was somewhat chill about Konatsu suddenly getting pregnant (as we saw Matsuda was actually more "angry" than him about the situation of a "bastard" child), and asked her to live back in the house with them?
And lastly, about the Gang Boss, Yakumo said "I owe you a debt I could never repay." on season 2 episode 8, what's this debt? Is it about "pretending" to be Shinnosuke's birth father? Is it about covering-up the truth about Miyokichi and Sukeroku's death? Is it about letting Yotarou leave the gang peacefully? Is it about something else? Also, why was Konatsu shown with him a few times after giving birth, was she really his mistress? Was she pretending it was his kid? Did he know it was Yakumo's?
Just a little rant, it really bothe

βSorry if my english is badβ
I am reading the book βKokoroβ by Natsume Soseki. Itβs written in the 1910s and as soon as he mentioned the theatre it reminded me of rakugo. The book also reminds me of Maison Ikkoku. In fact, I think itβs inspired by it. Iβm looking for an anime that will bring out feelings and scenes from a 20th century japan, without fusion elements (eg hip hop in samurai champloo)
Genre and year of production are not important, but if thereβs a bit of romance Iβm always happy. Not too long if possible
SPOILER ALERT ABOUT ENDING OF 'SHOUWA GENROKU RAKUGO SHINJUU'
.
.
.
Recently finished the anime Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, and loved it - it was like a piece of great literature, in how it delved into Kikuriko / Yakumo's character and his journey. However, like many viewers, I was shocked by the implication in the final episode. Please don't read on if you've not yet finished the anime as it contains spoilers about the entire anime.
After the scene between Konatsu and Higuchi in which Higuchi asks Konatsu and posits his theory that the father could be Kiku, viewers are obviously meant to believe that Kiku could be the father of Shinnosuke. However, this is not confirmed / denied and therefore remains an open question at the end of the series. After watching that scene, my first emotional reaction was to be disgusted, and to reject the idea. The reason for the reaction is a moral judgement, and the ick/creep factor of the idea of Kiku and Konatsu having a child together (implications of child grooming), it would be morally wrong if it were true, and also ruins what I thought had been an amazing depiction of a complicated father-daughter / guardian-ward relationship.
However, putting aside this moral judgement, I needed to really test this possibility empirically, because I loved the work and struggled with the reveal - it is too shocking and incongruous with the careful, precise tone of the rest of the series. So, I wanted to posit an evidence-based argument for what the series actually wants the viewers to take away from. In this argument, I say that Kikuhiko is not the father of Shinnosuke. I can prove it's not Yakumo, but I can't prove who the father is - the yakuza boss is implicated somehow, but I don't think he is the father either. The point is, just because the father isn't the yakuza boss, it doesn't prove it is Yakumo/Kiku either. The burden of proof rests on showing that Kiku is the father, for which there is not enough evidence.
'Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof' is the common saying. As such, the burden of proof lies on having to prove that Kiku is Shinnosuke's father. So my approach in this argument is as follows - I list out the evidence for proving Kiku is Shin's father, and the list out the evidence against the claim that Kiku is Shin's father. With each piece of evidence, I weight as follows - Strong, Medium and Weak, and give some reasons why I give that rating. In general, strong

I will most likely make 2 threads for the very first episode, one for TV premiere and one for the much longer, but better Director's Cut Fuck it, this is why we have democracy, it's entirely up to you with which one you start with.
Here is a poll that should determine which time the threads should go up. I am sorry if none of these options are good for you, but they are the best for me.
I will post the results and a reminder on the 28th January, an additional reminder one week before the start and a last one the very day before the 18th Februrary.
Thank you for your attention.
