ELI5: What it means when a firearm has a "gas-operated reloading" system?

Other than the whole "pull trigger, gunpowder goes off firing the bullet from the casing" part, that part I understand.

Can a plug-in hybrid be operated for a period of time (2 or 3 months) on gasoline only? For example, if I am going to spend some time with my car where it would not be practicable to charge it? Normally (the rest of the year) it would only use electricity, driving about 20-30 miles per day

Why do gas operated rifles use the gas tapped from the barrel to both: unlock the bolt, and cycle the action? Why not just have the gas unlock the bolt, and then have the gun cycle like a straight blowback?

In other words, why not use the gas tapped from the barrel to ONLY unlock the bolt (NOT cycle it), and then use the residual pressure pushing on the empty casing to provide the force to cycle the action? (Like on a straight blowback, where the pressure from firing pushes on the empty casing and cycles the action)

TL;DR

Using the gas tapped from the barrel to ONLY unlock the bolt (NOT cycle it). Then, using the force of the empty casing pushing back on the bolt to cycle the action.

Would this work?

10 ga Brass Shotgun Shell Reloading Tools

I am trying to find some resources to locate hand reloading tools for an old 10ga shotgun I have inherited from my FIL. I have been able to find all the wadding I would need and the other components. I have even found an old hand priming tool. What I haven’t been able to find is the dowel tool used to compress the load at each layer. Does anyone here happen to know a good place to look? I’ve checked google to no avail. Most searches went to eBay, which also left me empty handed.

Thank you in advance.

Were there coin-operated home gas meters in the USA in the 19th and early 20th centuries?

When I was a child in the 1970s I ran across a joke book that was clearly many decades older, and in that book was a joke to the effect of: "A young child was told to save his pennies in a special green box. When the green box was full he was to take it to his parents and they would give him dimes in exchange, which he stored in a yellow box. When the yellow box was full, he was to take all the dimes and put them in a red box in the basement. Many years later he learned that the red box was the gas meter."

Did homes of that era really have coin-operated gas meters? That seems really inefficient. As a lifelong aficionado of historic ephemera, I seem to recall seeing other articles and items that hinted at this, though I can't recall any of them at the moment. This has been a mystery for me for many years and I welcome any information.
