Melderskin by Fitjar Islands, my impressions

Hello,

After a long wait, because of both customs (and the post wanting up to 2 weeks to bring stuff through) and because they wanted to know exactly how much to produce, my jar of Fitjar Islands limited edition shaving cream, Melderskin, is here! I am in no way affiliated with Fitjar Islands, I just like their products.

Edit: i have maid a first Impression of their regular scented creams in the shape of their Island Hopper set, which is the closest thing they have to a sampler pack. https://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/967205/review_of_fitjar_islands_shaving_creams/ end-edit

Images: http://imgur.com/a/Dr6mQjr

Razor: Mühle r89

Blade: Aeterna (2nd use) by Swedish Razorblade Factory

Brush: Mühle traditional silvertip badger brush

Post: alum and Barrister and Mann reserve Fern aftershave splash.

Lather: Melderskin shaving cream by Fitjar islands, www.fitjarislands.com

Stubble: 30 hours since last shave, which was only with the grain.

Bonus: my 2.5 year old son helped me, and got to use some thayers witch hazel.

The razor, brush, and alum was a gift from my wife so i could try wetshaving. The blade, cream, aftershave, and witch hazel was bought with my own money. The cream was the only thing not already in my posession.

First impressions

Looking at the jar was that this is part of their regular lineup. They use the same jars and design of the labels on all their stuff. Minimalistic and clean. Opening up, I see the cream being a bit tilted to the side. Something I bland the post for. Glossy and white, a bit stuck on the inside of the lid. The feeling is a bit of a fat cream on the fingers but rinses of easy and leaves no sticky residue.

The scent comes first with a noticeable rose scent, followed by some menthol "sting", you who have tried smelling mentholated creams and soaps know exactly what I mean. Lastly it is rounded out by some forrest smell. Making this cream smell like having a bunch of roses in my hand while walking through a winter forrest in the north,  with both pine and spruce being present in a way where I cant separate the two and only get the blend I call northern forest.

Their own description:

LIMITED EDITION RELEASE AW19 – PRE-ORDER FOR SHIPPING END OCTOBER. We are delighted to announce the release of our first Limited Edition shaving cream. Brought back to life from our archives, Melderskin is a refreshing blend of pine with subtle floral notes and is completed by an undertone o

[Video Review / x-post] "Nekromantik" shave soap by Southern Witchcrafts, and maybe the only time on screen for a Fitjar aftershave balm.

Video Link

Southern Witchcrafts "Nekromantik" shaving soap

I feel a bit empty, frankly, without the fun of having the bot right there to tell me that I need to post a top level comment right now. No matter, some crunchy Jalapeno Cheetos are making me feel much better about myself.

Disclosure Statements

/u/Phteven_j was kind enough to pass on two samples of his new shaving soaps, the Southern Witchcrafts "Pomona" and the "Nekromantik", for review.

I bought the Fatip Grande with my own money. Shout-out to /u/lilsanch for extra Gillette Silver Blue blades!

I was gifted the BiG Shave 2014 LE brush because I was going to give mine to my younger son.

The Fitjar aftershave comes from /u/hedgehogsinhats, as part of his absurdly generous box of shaving goodies.

Review These are the first two shaving soaps from the Southern Witchcrafts (at least as far as I know, and what the hell do I know?). I used the sample of Pomona first, and then moved on to the Nekromantik. Pomona smells of sweet spiced apples with a light floral touch, and is a great fall scent for those of you that like to match scents to the season. Nekromantik is a better fit for me, as I love the smell of wild wisteria, as well as roses and honey. The scent also includes red wine, dirt, and ozone, but those are faint or in the background for me.

The soap is a simple vegan soap, and by "simple" I simply mean that it is a straightforward vegan soap albeit with kaolin clay and silk. The soap is quite soft, and is easy to load. I used a dry brush and dripped water a few times while loading the brush, which generally resulted in plenty of soap to build a nice slick lather. The lather is not as thick or dense as some of the more recent soaps I have used, but it is quite slick and stable. No issues with buffing, and the soap rinses off pretty easily. The post shave is good, with only mild tightness. To be fair, my skin is really dry right now, so I was quite happy with the post-shave. A nice new entry in the shaving market, I am just not sure where to buy the soap, perhaps /u/Phteven_j will enlighten us!

I really intended to review only one product, but I did a bit of an accidental review of the Fitjar "Folgefonn" aftershave balm. I am trying to use up the bits and bobs on the shaving shelf (Ok, SHELVES...) and I just grabbed this yesterday. Lightly mentholated, a bit thick and waxy, surprisingly easily absorbed - an unexpected pleasure to use!

Anyone have experience with Fitjar Islands soaps/creams?

On trythatsoap.com, one of the few soaps with a simple chamomile scent is the Fitjar Islands Havn soap (and cream). Unfortunately, they are based in Norway, and internationa shipping is $10, bringing the total cost up to $30 a puck.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this soap/cream. And is there any difference between the soap and the cream? Because some old forum posts say that the cream is inferior to the soap.

Any input is appreciated.

[Video Review and Write-up] Fitjar "Slåtterøy" shave soap and aftershave balm, from Norway!

Video Link   Fitjar "Slåtterøy" shave soap and aftershave balm

  • /u/Kammander-Kim sent me the soap and aftershave balm to try out, and thank you very much!
  • Steve Bento gifted me the brush and it still chokes me up a bit
  • I bought the Gillette Tech with my own money

Review

Thanks again to /u/Kammander-Kim for the gift of the soap and aftershave!

The Fitjar "Slåtterøy" shave soap, named after a famous lighthouse on the island Slåtterøy (part of the Fitjar islands), is a refill, packaged in a very well done paper wrapper with all kinds of interesting stuff printed on the inside. For example: "Tempting as it may be to massage the luscious lather all over your face, keep it away from the eye area. Eating it will not make you a more dashing explorer, so let’s reserve it for external use only." Great instructions, and easy to follow!

The soap is billed as a vegan product and looks to be a coconut oil based soap. The refill is a hard puck of soap. If you are wondering, no, I did not need to bloom this soap before using it, just like YOU don't need to bloom your soap before you use it. The soap loads easily and quickly, and will be a bit foamy and loose if you start with too much water. The lather is quite slick once you add enough water and takes on a nice sheen. The lather does feel a bit light compared to some recent soaps, but that's more a matter of "fat" content. I did have a number of strokes during shaves this week where it felt like there was no blade in the razor, sort of friction-free shaving. The soap takes a bit of work to rinse off, and the post-shave for me was ok but not great: some tight skin immediately following the shave. With that said, I also need to point out that my skin felt quite smooth as well, just not naturally supple. I like the slickness of the soap, and it is certainly easy to work with, but it is drying.

The scent is a mix of citrus and woodsy spices, meant to evoke the faraway and exotic places that Nordic sailors would visit and bring back gifts for those that stayed behind. The scent is distinct, but not strong, and does start off with a nice hit of clean citrus and then you get a deeper note of wood and spices. Quite nice!

The Fitjar "Slåtterøy" post shave balm contains a number of skin-friendly ingredients, like jojoba oil, sunflower oil, bay leaf oil, buckthorn, and honey. The balm is quite thick, not runny at all. I applied it to my hand

[Review] Fitjar islands shaving creams

Disclaimer: I'm a relatively inexperienced user, having only tried Proraso green and Cella shaving soaps/creams, so take this review with a grain of salt

After seeing the post about the revamped Norwegian artisanal shaving products manufacturer Fitjar islands on /r/wicked_edge, I decided to go ahead and order some. Then I ran into the problem of deciding on a fragrance. There are 4 to choose from: Folgefonn, Slåtterøy, Fjellheim, and Havn. Because I was pining for some nice samples of artisanal soap makers for some time already I went ahead and ordered the Island hopping shaving cream sample pack, which allowed me to try out the 4 different fragnances side-by-side for a very nice price.

I now have at least 3 shaves from each of them so I decided to share my experience with this community.

Lather:

This is the area where I have little to compare with, but in any case, the lather that I got from all of these creams was hands down the best I've every had. See note from disclaimer above, though. Because I was not used to lathering up shaving creams, my first few tries were not optimal, but when I started using a shaving bowl to start the lather, it was just fantastic.

Fragrances:

Folgefonn (Refreshing as the wind off the glacier): Light refreshing menthol freshness with a friendly hint of pine. The menthol is really unobtrusive and provides just the right amount of cooling, that will not freeze your face off. The pine gives you a feeling of walking through a forest in the winter (only two small glaciers fightnig for survival where I live). I liked this a lot.

Slåtterøy (Spicy citrus fragrance that evokes your inner explorer): This is a very refreshing, slightly sweeter scent, with a very nice citrusy tang. Pure joy to use, it put a smile on my face every time I used it, my personal favorite.

Fjellheim (Like you have been rolling in juniper bushes on your way through the mountain): The juniper smell plays a central role in this scent. At first smell, before you whip up the lather this is the only thing you can detect. When you lather up though, an earthy undertone is also detectable. The makers describe it as the smell of freshly cut logs. To be perfectly honest I wasn't the biggest fan of this earthy undertone, but this is just my very personal opinion.

Havn (Like coming into safe harbour after a rough day at sea): This is the most reserved of the bunch. At first glance it could appear bland in comparison with the o

Fitjar Islands mail call & sotd

I got a nice little mail call today from Fitjar Islands in Norway. Four of their shaving creams and their synthetic shaving brush which is made by Progress Vulfix which as you know, owns Simpson. This is my first synthetic brush and I quite like the looks of it. The cream I chose for tonight's shave is Slåtterøy which is their interpretation of bay rum with citrus and woody spices. It's not an incredibly strong scent but you certainly pick up the citrus and woody notes. It's very easy to lather and the lather proved to be top notch. I'm sure once I get a bit more used to the synthetic brush I'll be able to dial the lather up another notch or two. I'm pretty impressed so far.

Review of Fitjar Island's shaving creams

Let me start by telling that this is written on my phone and English is not my first language, and the note of how I got everyting. I am in no way affiliated with Fitjar Islands and everything in this review is just a recap of my own experience. Your own experience and thoughts about these products can be different as we are different people with our own history and past.

The razor, a Mühle r89, and the brush, a Mühle silvertip badger, and the alum block, was a birthday gift from my wife. The blades, Astra superior stainless, was purchased by me. The shaving creams were purchased by me, and the After Shave gel was a free sampler gift that Fitjar sent with my package as a surprise. Purchase of creams was made from their website, https://www.fitjarislands.com . The rest was already in my possesion from earlier. The shaving bowl was a big tea mug I took from my kitchen when I started wetshaving and I have no idea when and how I got it, but it has been here for atleast 2 years.

Some time ago I had a giveaway of Aeterna razor blades here on reddit, and I advertised about it in both r/wicked_edge and r/wetshaving. One of the winners was u/warbird2k. He later posted a sotd with the blades were he also used a soap from Fitjar Islands. Being a soapmaker in my neightbouring country Norway, I was intrigued. Before warbird2k made a great giveaway of soap samples he got from Fitjar I already had made my purchase. Which was good since I did not win anything. What did I buy? I could not decide what soap I wanted to try, and I do not have the money to try all 4, I looked and found that they have a sampler called Island Hopping, that contains travel size containers of shaving creams in their 4 scents. The shaving cream containers have around 4 shaves worth of cream. The four are Fjellheim, Slåtterøy, Folgefonn, and Havn, and came in a grey box that makes it good to wrap and use as a gift.  The gifted after shave was of the scent Havn.

The procedure of all shaves were identical. I did not have for 3 days, and used cold water since it was too warm outside. I used my finger to take a almond size piece of the cream and lathered in a bowl and then on my face. I did 3 passes: with, across, and lastly against the grain/beardgrowth. Finished up by rinsing with water, applying alum before washing it off, and lastly using the after shave when I used the Havn soap.

How did the creams perform?

Excellent according to me. Easy to lather and I got a nice protective layer

Fitjar soap is fantastic

Today I received my shipment of Fitjar soaps.

They arrived in a box just big enough to fit everything in with minimal packaging. I'm a big fan of this as it means that most everything can go into the recycling bin. I received a nice written note from the owner Jorunn, thanking me for my purchase.

Jorunn, it is I who should be thanking you. The Fitjar soap was amazing. Using my Omega 10066 I whipped up what I believe to be the best lather I have made so far. I let the puck soak with my brush while I showered, which means it was probably sitting for around ten minutes.

I had to swirl my brush around for perhaps twenty seconds to get a good load in it, and then I bowl lathered the soap up. It quickly and without much effort became a rich and thick lather with the 'watery sheen' that seems to indicate a great quality lather. After playing around a little bit, it seems like the only bad thing about adding more and more water to the soaps are ridiculous amounts of lather.

I have to give the soap a perfect score for ease of lathering and lather quality.

One thing I did not like was the smell. I don't want to let that put you off buying (the now limited supply) soaps as I am one of those people seems to get headaches from quite a lot of smells which is why I won't name the scents I get, for fear of prejudicing you. If Fitjar made an unscented soap (please tell me if they do and I can't see for looking) I would buy it immediately and without hesitation.

Fitjar gets a perfect score. It's a shame that Jorunn is having to close down, but I hope they manage to keep the brand alive somehow as I read they intend to.

EDIT: I've just tested with the creams I got samples of and they are as great as the soaps. The bubbles are slightly larger - maybe half a millimetre as opposed to a quarter of one but the cream's lather was still thick, rich, and shiny.

Fitjar Såpekokeri: an *amazing* shaving soap

I use Fitjar Såpekokeri for the first time this morning (and blogged it). The soap is completely amazing and is the first soap I've used for which soaking might make sense (and the maker does recommend it). I don't soak my soaps, and when I brush this puck vigorously to begin with (using a horsehair brush), I got nothing: nada, bupkis, zero. I might as well have been brushing a hard, white-plastic puck. There was NO sign of lather, so much that I thought that perhaps the puck, which I had put into a soap bowl upside down, might have been in a plastic shell. But I scratched it, and no: it was soap. Hard soap, but soap.

I turned it over, and tackled the top side, and this met with success: I did get lather. I brushed more---vigorously and at length---and I got a completely stunning lather, equal (I think, but will do direct comparison) to Martin de Candre. Indeed, I love this lather.

I read the maker's instructions only after the shave (it's a sign of weakness to read instructions in advance, right? and besides, instructions for shaving soap? Give me a break), and that's when I discovered the soaking advice.

For some reason I have an aversion to soaking, but I'll definitely be using this soap again, and if soaking proves necessary I'll do it. The lather is fabulous.

Howdy ladyshavers! I'm looking for a lathering shaving cream for my wife who just finished terrorizing her underarms with an overly old and dull razor cartridge. Then I'll bundle it up in a kit for her.

There's a small artisinal outfit in Norway that makes handmade soaps, including shaving soaps and shaving creams. Reviews have ranged from mediocre to fantastic depending on the product. I just looked and saw that they have a special shaving cream for women

Since the proprietor is a woman, I thought there would be a good chance for this to be a great product. Has anyone tried it?

[ x-post ] Review/Firsr impressions of Fitjar Island's shaving creams
