Part one
I have decided to do my best and fill in some blanks concerning some incomplete information that has been spread, specifically regarding the Dassey computer. Sometimes comments have blatant errors, minor misrepresentations, or complete omissions of relevant information. I'll try and do multiple posts per week, as there are so many misrepresentations floating around out there regarding this case. Luckily the case files are all available to us. This post is sourced. All links to PDF documents will be direct links to the correct page number. I also have included a few screenshots. For starters, here is the first claim I will expand on regarding the Dassey computer:
> Another person in jail with Steven while he was awaiting trial in 2006 told police that Steven said something to the effect of if they look on that computer, there will be trouble. That is what police claim alerted them to the Dassey computer.
Why did I take issue with this? Apparently the user who wrote this did so to clear up some misinformation. Let’s examine the claim. What is the implied conclusion? It is: if the inmate’s statement is accurate then we must accept as true that Avery had knowledge of the violent porn on the computer as early as April 2006.
Of course the user left out many critical details, specifically what Avery and Zellner have to say about it. Before I get to that however, I will expand on the above with some review of the relevant source material.
First, this information regarding "Another person in jail with Steven" is from a CASO report authored by Investigator Wiegert (linked below) who as we know is one of the officers that questioned Brendan until he incriminated himself and Avery in the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach. From the report we can tell Fassbender was with Wiegert during his interaction with the inmate in question. Fassbender was the other officer who was always questioning Brendan alongside Wiegert.
In April 2006 (after Brendan was arrested but before the Dassey computer was seized) Wiegert and Fassbender had learned from a jail worker that an inmate wanted to speak with some detectives because he had apparently spoken with Avery while he was in jail and the inmate wanted to pass along what he allegedly heard Avery say.
