A list of puns related to "Extended Mind Thesis"
I'm struggling with this extended mind thesis. They seem to be arguing that if an object is coupled within a cognitive process then it is part of that cognitive process. So ”ottos notebook,” they say forms part of ottos cognition. I'm struggling to find arguments against their thesis, maybe it's because I'm not fully understanding their argument. I have been reading into this a few weeks now perhaps I am just over thinking it but I am really stuck. I thought this would be the best place to come to and seek some advice.
Please delete this if this is not allowed I haven't posted anything before so I do hope this adheres to guidelines etc.
Hi all
My GF is currently a masters student in EE doing her research for a thesis masters and was expected to graduate in May. She has been interviewing like crazy for the last two months and is expecting an offer today for an opportunity she’s expecting to accept. Throughout the interview process she has been stating that she’s been expecting to graduate in May of next year and could start after that.
Within the last few days she has been gearing up to submit her timelines for thesis defending and proposals and such and her professor told her to ask for flexibility with the job start date because he feels that the timeline is a bit tight; basically he’s being very noncommittal about her graduating in May and is saying that there is a chance she would have to continue doing research through next summer to finish, and that’s “the nature of the work”.
She’s pretty anxious that now she has to go back to this job offer and say “hey I know I said May this entire time but it could actually be September provided blah blah blah” and she’s worried they will take find her wishy/washy or otherwise have a reason to rescind the job offer.
I think she’d be fine to ask about flexibility, I think that most companies know that a student doing their thesis masters have to defend and such and anything can happen, but I haven’t been able to find much info anywhere on any experience with a situation like this.
Should she accept the job offer and only ask them about change of estimated start date once she firmly knows it would or wouldn’t be May? Should she ask about it before signing the offer? She said there’s the chance that in May that she could get told that she still needs to do a few more months, so what about that point? Then she hasn’t interviewed anymore and she’s kind of stuck at the company’s mercy.
Just looking to see if anyone had any sort of experience of relevant info for something like this and what she should do.
Thanks!
Particularly the "physical version" of the thesis by David Deutsch. (Church Turing Deutsch Thesis, CTD)
I've been told by an "expert in computational theory" that,
>Brains are physical objects that obey the laws of physics and all known laws of physics are computable. And we know from Church Turing [Deutsch] that every attempt to build a machine that exceeds a Turing machine in power has failed entirely. So we finally just theorized there was no such machine and so far that universal law has held no matter how much we try otherwise
>
>It's not a dogmatic or statement or intended as doctrine, it's just a straightforward statement of what the current theory (with no competitors) implies right now.
>
>The way I know it's the case is simple: If it weren't true, it would be trivial to show me how to build a machine that can exceed a Turing machine.
>
>I'd know the other experts were right because they wouldn't be making philosophical arguments, they'd simply describe what the machine does.
>
>In fact, this is trivial. I could describe machines to you right now that can exceed a Turing machine.
>
>I know of several. But they exist only theoretically because they all happen to violate the laws of physics. This is why Deutsch said Computational Theory is actually a branch of physics, not mathematics.
And when asked about the possibility of minds requiring non-physical processes as some philosophers of mind have suggested. This was the response,
>How would we ever know that minds are using non-physical processes? You'd never be able to describe them mathematically unless they were using physical processes So they'll never be a paper on how mind's actually work in that case. They simply become inscrutable to science.
>
>But there be no way to know that that's the case.
>
>So we just dumbly keep thinking that they are physical objects that follow physical processes. And in fact that would be the right guess. Even though it's wrong.
>
>What you've really done is you've created a world that is inscrutable and incomprehensible. There's no real point in being a philosopher anymore either. In science has only really worked by chance up to this point[not sure if mispelling here]. That's why there's no reason why I need to take that view seriously.
To protect this person's identity I won't reveal who they are but he said he is a Master in Computational Theory at a top University

As I exited BTC, seeing the visible sign indicating as of now it’s a Ponzi, I can’t shake the ‘what am I missing/could I be wrong” feeling. Why are wealthy people still buying? What do they know that most don’t? Is there an, as yet, shoe to drop?
The FOMO is strong with BTC. Will it’s greatest weakness be cured, turning this Ponzi into a generational wealth base? That’s the heart of the question…

I believe Naked shorting has allowed GameStop’s circulating shares to number above 1 Billion, with a minimum short interest percent of float to be 2000%. Thus, it can also be concluded retail likely owns upwards of 500 million shares and the financial impact is likely upwards of $100 trillion. DTCC came to this same conclusion around mid-March and is now actively taking steps to crash the entire market, allowing them to socialize losses to other major players in the market.
Since this seems to be getting some visibility again, I'll provide a quick update to my estimates. If I ever stop being a slacker I'll write up a formal argument to support my updated numbers. Until then, I'll just provide my updated thesis statement.
I believe a variety of shorting loopholes exploited by bona fide market makers have allowed GameStop’s circulating shares to number in the multiple billions of shares with SI likely being somewhere between 3,000% - 10,000% (assuming the tradeable float is ~30M shares). Thus, it can also be concluded retail likely owns the float dozens of times over (a specific number seems irrelevant at that point). I estimate the potential financial impact to be a $1quadrillion+ extinction level event for the financial system as we know it today. The DTCC members have been taking proactive measures to prepare for such an event, but only time will tell if their best attempts to prepare will actually make a difference for the potential outcome.
Needless to say, I still like the stock.
This is a thesis argument; thus, it is not financial advice.
This thesis is primarily math and logic-based speculation; thus, it should not be considered as factual.

They sort of ruin the experience that I’ve been building up to. But I’ve played through the legendary edition twice now, and both times I was satisfied with the climax of the story in ME3. In fact ME3 was my favorite game in the trilogy on both playthroughs. The emotional and well spoken good byes with your squad before you make the final push and watching the outcome of your sacrifice to save the galaxy made me tear up both times, and I’m not one to cry over video games easily. It made me feel like I experienced ME rather than playing it. The entire trilogy is an incredibly flawed one filled with plot holes and story conveniences, but the quality of the dialogue and tense emotional impact of the chain of events far out weighed and flaws the games possessed. That extends to the ending, too. My experience was that ME wasn’t really about making game and story changing choices that altered the outcome of the game, but rather flavor changing choices that altered the mood and feel of your play through. For example a lot of dialogue options don’t seem to alter the outcome of conversations no matter if you pick REN or PAR options unless it’s to resolve a specific situation. Yes squad mates can die but the ending to each game seems to be pretty similar no matter what you choose to do. It seems to be the same with the ending. Maybe I would have felt differently if I had played the originals, and maybe I would have reacted differently if I wasn’t expecting a garbage fire, but I was satisfied with both endings I got. I’m not trying to spark a heated debate, I just think the ending didn’t live up to its hideous reputation in my opinion.
Having said that, imagine spending three games trying to destroy the reapers with the illusive man trying to stop you so he can attempt to harness their power for himself, only to be convinced by an ai that YOU can control the reapers.
My child 2yo is experiencing complex health issues and I'm needing to invest myself full time in her care. I've never stopped working but I feel called to step away from my professional job temporarily and I find that really SCARY. I'm not sure where to go for help to better prepare myself for a temporary exit that does not kill my profession altogether. Thank you for your shares.
Edit: I plan on being off for 1 year then reassess depending on daughter's health and finances.
I’m really in the mood for something somewhat psychological that’ll emotionally devastate me, but will leave me feeling hopeful by the time I close the book. That’s the best way I can describe my feelings toward the examples listed in my title. I’ve been going through tough times recently, so I’m looking for something that I’ll be able to relate to, but will be able to give me a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel. Nothing too flowery though please, I’d honestly weigh the “emotional devastation” more heavily than the “uplift” though both components are crucial.
Here are a few other examples of stories I feel fit into this category with my standout favorites bolded.

Hello all! I have less than a month (4 days less than) to write a 10 000 word thesis on the link between affect and voice behaviour in organisational settings. I have all my results and analyses done, I have done lots and lots of research (I think I’ve wasted too much time on this part) and for the most part know what I want to write and where it needs to go (only really at the WTF stage with the data analysis/results section but I’m going to try ask for some guidance on this. I have other assessments to deal with also, however. I don’t expect anyone’s response to change my personal outcome, but I can’t help but seek a ‘yes, that’s possible’ or ‘respectfully, no’. Is this possible for me to finish on time? I am on the brink of a meltdown.
I am currently a masters student and applied for OPT back in Feb (and it is approved) as I was supposed to be graduating in May. But my thesis was extended and might get the degree anytime in summer (don’t know when is it though). Start date I requested on EAD was June 1.
So my question is, can I work if I have the job before June 1 while working on thesis (from immigration standpoint).
Since my OPT is already approved, I don’t think DSO can extend the graduation date on paper, so how does that work?
I specifically prefer doing qualitative studies but if you can suggest a great topic compatible with the quantitative or mixed methods, I'll take it into consideration as well. My thesis advisor already rejected 10 topic/title proposals. Help a desperate working student please
I am currently writing an essay on Clark and Chalmers' Extended Mind thesis (ExM). They incorporate a common-sense functionalist approach to the mind (but not consciousness).
I am researching which other theories would be compatible, or which would be very much not compatible. Any help would be amazing, as my brain is starting to turn to mush!
I shall list some of the theories I'm considering and my current thoughts, but am actively encouraging engagement and to be told I'm right/wrong!:
Behaviourism - this one has been tricky but I'm leaning towards thinking they may accept ExM, as if we consider the Otto example from C&Cs paper, although the belief was realised externally to the body (from his notepad), it still influenced his behaviour. Eliminative materialism - a hard no to ExM. Brains and only brains can realise any form of mental state. Identity theory - leaning towards no, as they believe mental states are identical to brain states, so would need a re-evaluation of the theory to then claim mental states realised outside of the brain could be identical to brain states.
Please let me know your thoughts and opinions, it would be hugely helpful. Thanks so much
