Magic DOSBox - Button Mapping

I'm enjoying playing games in DOS on the RP2+. They run a lot better and having the touchscreen let's me free up the mouse. The issue I've come across though is that the control sticks and dpad can only map the directional keys on the keyboard or the mouse movement. Since the touchscreen can be used as a mouse I don't really need that so now I have three physical inputs that can only map the directional keys on the keyboard. Having one analog stick double as the mouse could be useful but then I still have another analog stick not being used. Is there anyway around this? I understand that now both the sticks are analog sticks but if I can map the directional keys to them why not WASD or any other 4 keys from the keyboard? It would really help in old CRPGs where I could use the extra inputs.

LPT: for GOG DOSbox games the Linux versions are an easy script edit away from working flawlessly on ARM.

This may be well known but I only discovered it the other day revamping my pi 4 desktop.

If you download the Linux installer of any DOSbox game you own, the shell script is actually an archive and if you just point unzip at it it will unpack it to give you the game as installed. Comes with a start dot sh script. Open that up and you'll see at some point it points to a routine called run_dosbox. If you go find that routine you'll see a line pointing to a prebundled DOSbox executable plus commandline arguments and config file locations. Edit this bit to point it at your system installed DOSbox (usually /usr/bin/dosbox but may vary on other distros) while leaving everything else like the arguments being passed and configs being specified.

Voila, everything works as it should. I only own a few games on there so I haven't done extensive testing. It's possible some rely on tweaks to the DOSbox executable, but in my handful of tests this worked flawlessly and saved me tons of time.

DOSBox Staging 0.78.0 has been released!

DOSBox Staging 0.78.0 has been now officially released!

Main improvements in this new version:

  • Added universal builds for macOS, supporting x86-64 and ARM64 in the same DMG package.
  • Added a workaround for vsync lag, which is useful for video outputs that enforce vsync.
  • Added window size and placement customizations .
  • Added full /help output text for the AUTOTYPE, BOOT, CALL, CHOICE, CLS, COPY, DIR, ECHO, EXIT, GOTO, HELP, IF, INTRO KEYB, LS, MD/MKDIR, MEM, RD/RMDIR, REN/RENAME, RESCAN, SHIFT, SUBST, and TYPE commands.
  • Added MSYS2-based release builds and instructions for those on Windows using MSYS2.
  • Merged PCjr composite patch.
  • Merged CGA composite improvement patch.
  • Added bash-shell completion.
  • Added Loguru, a fast cross-platform logging subsystem. Logs are now time-stamped and warnings are now colorized.
  • Merged S3 video patch.
  • Added configurable FluidSynth chorus and reverb settings.
  • Added auto-exit. When an executable that's passed on the command-line exits, then so too will the emulator. This is equivalent to manually adding the -exit command-line flag.
  • Added layered and portable configuration file handling.
  • Added ENet (reliable UDP) as an option for modem and null-modem transport, as well as SERIAL.COM for runtime serial-port configuration.
  • Added support for virtual Ethernet and TCP/IP networking via slirp.
  • Added support for networking in Windows for Workgroups 3.11 from the shell. Previously networking in WfW was only possible when booting a real MS-DOS installation from a bootable HDD image.
  • Added IDE controller support for CDROM image-mounts, which is useful for CDROM-based games that also happen to need a real DOS environment such as Revell's car games, like European Racers.
  • Numerous bugfixes

All of them are explained in detail on the release page: https://dosbox-staging.github.io/v0-78-0/

With downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS platforms.

Merry Christmas!

FE2 on DOSbox on Linux

Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is a distinctly DOSbox thing, or a Linux thing. Have been trying to play FE2 for a while now today and after a few (10-ish?) system hops, when trying to leave a space station, I keep getting stuck in the station exit bit, when usually ejected out in to space. Seems there is no recovery from this, even loading an earlier saved game etc.

Any advice / best practice for playing on Linux? Or am I playing with a dodgy version (was downloaded from https://www.myabandonware.com/game/frontier-elite-ii-22i#download)

Thanks.

Dosbox-X won't run Alone in the Dark 2. It completely freezes up. Have to kill the process with task manager. Game works fine in regular Dosbox though.

I can play AITD2 (CD version) in Dosbox just fine. Even tweaked the CPU cycles a bit just to reduce some chopped up audio (still get it). Tried it in Dosbox-X because I wanted to use the xBR shader. Well, DBX won't run it. I type "AITD2.exe".... the game starts. I see the big "Infogrames" logo, as soon as the logo fades out, Dosbox-X completely freezes up. I don't mean just the game itself, DBX is completely locked up. I have to kill the process in Windows Task Manager. I have tried changing the CPU cycles, the CPU type, verified that most of the settings in DBX are set the same as they were in regular Dosbox. I can't find ANY reason why Dosbox-X is freezing up.

Dosbox-X. How do you stretch the output image to actually fill the screen, and not just add black borders around a shrunken image? Fullscreen makes no difference.

Yes I know how to enable fullscreen in Dosbox-X. I also know you can make the window larger by dragging out the edges of the window. But regardless if I use fullscreen or resize the window, the actual image inside stays the same size. If I go fullscreen, the image stays the same size and just fills the rest of the screen with black space. Even when I get into a game, the actual image takes up maybe 1/4th of the screen that stays in the very center while the other 3/4ths of the screen is all black border.

I've tried different scalers and different output renderers. But the image in the center never actually stretches to fill the unused black space. What's the issue here?

What's better?: DosBox, Windows 95/98 Dos Mode or is there a better alternative?

I just bought The CRPG Book from BitMapBooks and it has uncovered a whole world of obscure CRPGs to me. It really is incredible just how many hidden gems there were on PC from the 80s - 2000s.

The only issue is a lot of these games are so unknown that there's no modern versions of them available. That means running games will inevitably be a mixed bag.

I know about DosBox and I have dabbled with it in the past. It seemed to work fine from my experience. I also have used VirtualBox with emulation in the past too, to mixed results.

Also, I recently acquired an IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop and I use that for most of my retro PC gaming. It has Windows 98 and Windows XP dual-booted. Windows 98 has an option to boot into Dos Mode. Is this feature more accurate than DosBox or basically the same or is it worse?

Lastly, I have heard of something called Boxer floating around on the internet. Not sure what it is, but people have been saying to run certain games in Boxer. Is that related to DosBox or is that something different altogether?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do you run a dos game after installing it on DosBox?

I'm trying to run Cybermage on Dos. I actually got it to install and I'm able to play it. Seriously, I couldn't be happier about that. The only issue is that I don't know how to launch it without installing it again. Here's my dos paths:

Mount c c:\dos

Mount d d:\dosgames

In the dos folder, I have the dos config files and the installation folder for Cybermage. The folder with the installed game is called CM.

The furthest I get is:

D: Install

And then the game installs to c:\CM.

Then the game is ready to play and i type CM to play.

The issue is as soon as I exit out of the game, the only way I can get back in is by re-installing the game.

Luckily, I have the config file set up so that i have everything mounted as soon as I launch DosBox.

If there is a way to launch the game after it is installed, I would really appreciate the help. I already looked up how to set up DosBox on YouTube but I couldn't find a video where they showed how to access the game after it's installed.

In this instance, I'm trying to run a ROM of the game from a folder. It's my test game since I ordered a physical copy and it hasn't come in yet. The physical game is a CD ROM.

How i saved a company business with dosbox.

Hi.

First and foremost, sorry for any mistakes. I'm not a native English speaker, first time poster here and not caffeinated yet. It's still early in the morning here.

So, back in 2016, i had my "real" first job as an it tech. I was already doing some it support in my previous jobs but it was more because I was "filling the gaps" rather than a real it job.

I was doing hotline for a company that is selling a software for laboratories. In reality, i was doing all type of IT support depending on which customer was calling.

One day, one of the customer i had a lot of interactions with called me. Since their IT guy was on a sick leave (he got burn out) i was doing more than just support for our software for them. My boss had a deal with them, apparently.

They decided to renew their old computers to newer ones while their IT guy was off. I'm talking throwing some XP SP1 computers for windows 7 computers. Why windows 7 ? They needed computers with a fucking serial/parallel port (don't remember which one of the two) and those were the only with the appropriate ports.

That's where shit went south. My mission ? Make their 20 ish year old printer (a very specific one that prints stuff that gets on the testing tubes) compatible with their new computers. The printer was using serial/parallel.

They used to have a all in one program made by their previous IT guy. A 16 bit program. New computers are windows 7 64 bits. Not even windows pro.

So my first plan was to find some updated program to make that thing work. There should be at least some 32 bit driver right ? Lol. Didn't found any updated single piece of software for that shit. After half a day of searching,i came to the conclusion that i would have to make their old program work.

Luckily for me, i have been in an association that does retro gaming for years by that point. So I thought, "could that all in one program run in dosbox ??".

And it did. Mostly.

It wasn't able to directly communicate with the printer. So, what i ended up doing, was creating a batch file that was running, in command line :

  • Their old program into dosbox
  • Dosbox "prints" in a virtual printer (which is a text file)
  • When it's done, the text file gets pushed through serial/parallel to feed the printer
  • Printer gets shit done.

And it work. It worked quite well actually. Took me 2 days but it worked.

The printer got replaced a couple months after that because it broke. Oh, well πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

DOSBox Staging 0.78.0 has been released!

DOSBox Staging 0.78.0 has been now officially released!
