Une aube affaiblie
Verse par les champs
La mรฉlancolie
Des soleils couchants.
La mรฉlancolie
Berce de doux chants
Mon coeur qui s'oublie
Aux soleils couchants.
Et d'รฉtranges rรชves,
Comme des soleils
Couchants, sur les grรจves,
Fantรดmes vermeils,
Dรฉfilent sans trรชves,
Dรฉfilent, pareils
A de grands soleils
Couchants sur les grรจves.

A couple of days ago I translated Verlaine's Chanson d'automne. It was fun, and now I can't stop. Here is a translation of his "Soleils Couchants":
Yestersun
A feeble dawn
drips on the lawn
the gloomy dun
of yestereve's sun.
The gloom intones
sweet swinging moans,
and my heart forgets
yestersun's set.
Strange dreams respun
like yestersun
wash up on shore
in scarlet gore,
Pour in undammed,
pour on the sand,
horizon filled
where yestersun spilled.
The original:

Camel's Hump (Wikipedia)
Camel's Hump has a very distinctive shape, and its name absolutely fits. Samuel de Champlain gave it the heraldic name
when he came across it exploring New England, but lion is definitely not the first shape that comes to mind when looking at it. The first record of the new name is when Ira Allen named it Camel's Rump on a map in the very late 1700s. Having sailed to the West Indies and Mexico before expanding on Cartier's exploration of Canada, would de Champlain have been familiar with camels, or only in name, or not at all when he left France in 1604?
