Could this be confusional arousal?

Sometimes my husband falls asleep on the couch and when I try to wake him up to get him into bed or to get him to finish his work he either gets verbally combative or starts crying.

For example: this evening, he was writing a paper and fell asleep on the couch, and the first time I woke him he asked me to take his laptop away and was whimpering/crying. The next time I woke him he got angry that I moved his laptop away because he "was trying to work" and was upset that I woke him even though he was also upset that he had to pack his work bag. Finally, I let him sleep on the couch and he woke up screaming and calling me names because I let him sleep on the couch when he needed to pack his bag, but then immediately walked to the bed and fell asleep without packing anything.

Another example is that I've woken him up and he's acted like he was on the verge of a panic attack, heavily breathing, asking where he is and what time it is, just sounding really confused and concerned.

This is not how my husband is. If we have an argument we talk it out calmly and the only time we call eachother names is when we're joking. He never screams at me like that, and after doing some googling the only thing I can find is confusional arousal, because half of what hes upset with doesn't make sense from minute to minute, and it's not his normal behavior.

If it does sound like confusional arousal, what are my next steps? Is there any way I can talk someone down from an episode like that?

Sorry if its a weird question, I'm not trying to diagnose him but more of get an idea of if I should take him to the doctor and discuss with them about this

Confusional Arousal, i.e. "Sleep Drunkenness"

Everything You Need to Know About Sleep Drunkenness

How this common sleep problem causes confusion and strange behavior upon waking

You’re sound asleep when your alarm goes off or your partner tries to wake you. You open your eyes and get out of bed, but you’re not fully awake. You wander around, say strange things or give blunt answers when someone talks to you.

And when your partner mentions your behavior later, you have no memory of it. What happened? You were probably sleep drunk. And you’re not alone β€” this condition affects at least 1 in 7 people.

Sleep specialist Juancarlo Martinez-Gonzalez, MD, explains this common condition and what you can do about it.

What is sleep drunkenness?

Sleep drunkenness is a casual term for confusional arousal, which is a type of parasomnia. A parasomnia is an unusual behavior that happens while you’re asleep or just waking up.

Confusional arousal is a problem with sleep inertia when your brain transitions between sleeping and waking up. When you’re sleep drunk, your brain doesn’t make the transition to wakefulness. Your conscious mind isn’t fully awake, but your body can get up, walk and talk.

β€œPeople who have confusional arousal might act confused or have trouble speaking,” says Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez. β€œThey might appear to be drunk, but they’re not.”

Sleep drunk episodes may last for just a few minutes or up to an hour. It can affect people of all ages, from children to adults.

Is being sleep drunk dangerous?

If you’ve ever been sleep drunk, your partner or family member may have gotten a laugh out of your unusual behavior. β€œIf it happens once a year and no one gets hurt, you probably don’t need treatment,” says Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez.

But don’t take this condition lightly if it happens frequently. In rare cases, people have harmed themselves or others while sleep drunk. Some people have tried jumping out of a window, and others have shown violent or aggressive behavior.

It can also interfere with your relationships if it bothers your partner or family members. β€œSome people end up sleeping in separate rooms, and that can have a negative impact on you and your partner,” says Dr. Martinez-Gonzalez.

What causes sleep drunkenness?

In many cases, there is no obvious cause. But you may be more likely to e

confusional arousals

I remember getting a drink with a blue cup from a fridge water dispenser after waking up and I felt drunk kind of and my thinking was slow, I then went back to my room and grabbed my mouse (which was connected to my pc) and started yanking the mouse, I then said some cuss words which I don't recall but I know it was a cuss word I then laid down in my bed for 10 seconds got back up unplugged my mouse from the pc (the pc is under my table) and walked to the fridge water dispenser again and stood there, I had a thought/recall that I thought it was gonna help me get a drink or it was a cup or it had a purpose for the fridge, after 5 seconds of standing there I went back to my room poured a bit of water from the cup I had onto the mouse pad and started ripping my mouse pad, I don't remember anything else but the way i remembered all of that was from me looking at my google drive this morning before going to school and my keyboard was unplugged and my mouse was flipped, I then saw the ripped sides of the mouse pad and then it came back to me, in that state last night it also felt like if you were to wake up in the middle of the night but as I stated it didn't feel right, like a part of my brain was controlling me or something like that, anyways I'm really confused so can someone help me out because my dad said "its because your always on that game its like natural for you to start touching the mouse and going on it" and my mum doesn't think much to it, so please help me out.

I think I experienced a confusional arousal this morning

So every morning at 7 AM, my mom wakes me up.
Well this morning, I suddenly woke up at 4 AM for reasons I can’t explain, and my sense of reality felt really crooked, I had a lot of weird delusions that I can’t describe, and my thinking felt really slow. When I saw that it was actually 4 AM and not 7, I went back to sleep.
When i was woken up at 7 for real, I was panicking frantically and looking all over the house for no reason. My mom asked what I was looking for and I said β€œMy percussion!” And she explained to me that I didn’t have a percussion and I was really confused, then I grabbed my own pillow and walked out of my room with it, asking my mom where I should put it. The rest was a blur until around 7:20ish when I came downstairs and got a text from my mom saying how nuts I was acting, and I didn’t even remember the β€œI’m looking for my percussion!” part until she reminded me. It’s just such a weird thing for me to have said, I have no clue what I even meant by my percussion, but I do remember having a confused perception of reality and feeling like I really had to find something or something bad would happen. Was what I experienced a confusional arousal? What causes people to wake up super early with that same feeling? I’d love to know what you think

Confusional Arousal Disorder - anyone else?

My girlfriend falls asleep SO quickly, she always has, we could be in the middle of a conversation in bed and she could just fall asleep.

Other times, if she falls asleep on the couch or somthing and I wake her up, or she wakes up on her own in the middle of the night, she looks at me with huge wide eyes and its like she is staring right through me. It is terrifying. Its like she has no clue who I am and like she knows nothing. Other times she will just ramble weird shit that makes no sense, or she will act out weird things/gestures with her hands and voice.

IDK the whole thing is weird, and im pretty sure its Confusional arousal - anyone have this personally or a SO who does? I know it doesnt bother her, she doesnt even remeber any of it when she does, so im not concerned, it more just weird and sometimes scary for me.

I’m pretty certain my two year old has confusional arousal parasomnia and I’m exhausted.

She’s normally a very happy girl who loves doing lots of things and she’s like an other worldly demon when she has confusional arousal. My husband and i have started to notice that when it happens she just screams and cries no and that clues us in that she’s not really awake. Her outbursts used to be maybe once a month if that and more recently she’s had three in the last two weeks. Her worst one was a 30 minute ordeal of her trying to wedge herself behind a chair. We’re expecting another baby in a few months and I’m hoping they’ll get better but i doubt it. I’m sure it’ll be stressful trying to deal with a newborn and her. If anyone has any good info or help they can lend I’d really appreciate it.

Am I experiencing sleep walking or confusional arousal or something?

Three times in the past few weeks, including last night, I (32 M) would wake up in bed next to my partner, realize I'm naked and think I shouldn't be and be scared I'm going to get caught. Last night it went like this:

Go to bed naked as always at 11pm. Wake up around 1am and realize I'm naked and start freaking out internally. I reach into my night stand, grab underwear, walk to the bathroom while covering myself and hoping my partner doesn't wake up and catch me naked. Then I peed and put on my underwear and went to sleep again.

The previous two times were similar but I realized that I was allowed to be naked before actually going back to sleep.

Like I'm legit scared my own partner is going to catch me naked and I shouldn't be. When we've been together 13 years and shower together on an almost daily basis. It's so bizarre.

Am I having some kind of sleep walking or confusional arousal or something? It's freaking me out.

Emotional processing issues with confusional arousal/after paralysis?

Sorry for double-posting. I have a lot of questions. TLDR below.

Does anyone ever get issues processing emotions during confusional arousal or after paralysis? Or maybe even with cataplexy or during or after microsleeps? Every time I have issues like this, I feel like my decision making is emotional and off. (And bad.)

I keep thinking I should be doing work or running errands and it's like I can't separate my emotions from reality. That's not normally an issue for me. I ask myself, do I need to do this right now for a logical reason or do I just feel anxious or guilty or something? And I don't know! I can't tell. It's really confusing.

Logically I understand if I can't understand something as simple as that, I probably don't need to be driving a car around, making decisions and completing schoolwork. Also, I've pushed myself in the past and I know I end up not understanding things, getting upset about it, and then not understanding how to handle those emotions and I just start crying? I'm a grown person and I feel silly. I understand that this is a sign something is really wrong and I need to just stay home and relax but emotionally I don't understand and it's confusing.

I still have the emotional feeling that I need to be doing something important right now! And it gives me anxiety I can't manage. And I can't really conceive of how this is a valid and serious health problem I'm having and a very understandable reason to take it easy for a day. It's like I can't process the accompanying feelings enough to process the information.

TLDR: Do you ever have trouble processing emotions when having N or IH symptoms? If yes, what are they like?

Son (7) has night terrors or confusional arousals?

Do we have any experts on sleep disorders here? My son will wake maybe 2-3 times a week and will walk around but when I approach him to get him back in bed he is not very responsive. He seem out of it, but he will respond sometimes to questions. He often breathes heavy during this and will grit his teeth or act a bit aggressively.

I find it terrifying at times and I don't know what I can do for him? This often occurs within an hour of being asleep and he doesn't recall it in the morning.

What can I do? Any suggestions. Also I can Google solutions so don't just do that, I would like advice from a doctor, professional, or someone who has experienced this themselves.

Thank you

Waking up as "someone else"

Apologies if the title is confusing, I wasn't quite sure how to word it. This was one of the more confusing sleep paralysis episodes I've had, and I'm curious if anybody else has experienced anything similar.

I've had sleep paralysis episodes off and on since I was 12, usually a few times a year, usually when I'm at my most stressed. I'm usually able to realize right away what's going on, and focus on my breathing/moving my fingers until my body wakes up. In this particular episode, I woke up paralyzed, and:
-had no knowledge of myself, the person writing this comment, existing at all
-had a different name
-had a different job
-was from a completely different town
-had no knowledge of or experience with sleep paralysis. As this "person", I thought I was having a panic attack.

It lasted until my body woke up and I was un-paralyzed, so probably only about a minute. My best guess is that I still had some dream logic going on, and that in whatever dream I had been having before I woke up, I was this person instead of myself. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Does anyone have any explanations?

i know confusional arousal is a thing where you wake up abruptly and feel really disoriented. but it’s the middle of the night and i experienced something similar but it just felt like it was a slower process of waking up. and i felt like i was having some type of psychotic episode while waking up. my thoughts were so confused and it felt like i wasnt even in control of my thinking and that i was going crazy but i feel okay now that i’m fully awake. i was having anxiety before i fell asleep because my body kept forcing me awake out of nervousness. so can this be caused by anxiety? because it just felt really alarming when i was experiencing it.

Help! Wake up not knowing where I am or Who I'm with

This is legit one of the scariest experiences for me. It's happened several times in the past year and occurred again last night after a long reprieve. I awoke shortly after falling asleep next to my husband at home. I didn't know who he was, where I was, or what time frame I was in. I literally thought he was a woman. I kept telling myself that it would clear up and I'd remember and that surely I was in a safe place where I was supposed to be and it would all makes sense soon. Well, it didn't. It took a while. During that time I feared I'd never get back to reality and might be stuck in that confusion forever. When I realized who my husband was I kept feeling my brain trying to slip back into confusion. Anxiety on 1,000 I laid awake in bed repeating something out loud to keep my focus. Wth is happening to me?!?

Self diagnosed central sleep apnea?

Hi, new here! I realized a few months ago that I've sleep apnea. I realized today too, after researching a bit, that it's likely central sleep apnea. I was dreaming and woke up noticing clearly that I was simply "forgetting" to breathe. I've had this feeling in the past, but didn't research.

I also wake up during the night often without knowing why and I suspect that this is likely also the apnea.

A couple months ago, when I was still thinking that it's obstructive sleep apnea (the only one I knew back then) I bought a sleeping backpack and it just caused discomfort, not using it anymore.

Another noteworthy, maybe connected symptom, is that a couple times (probably no more than 3 in total) in these months I woke up with a kind of memory loss where I didn't knew where I was and needed a few seconds to slowly "remember" that it was my home. It was strange. I read that sleep apnea can cause memory loss. Though both things may also be a consequence of something else. Or just not connected. Update: this appears to be called "confusional arousal" and indeed possibly connected to sleep apnea: https://sleepeducation.org/sleep-disorders/confusional-arousals/

I've medical insurance and plan to look for attention today, the problem is that appointments with specialists take forever (2+ months) here and I'm a bit desperate as this is making me feel anxious, tired and affecting my focus during the day.

I discovered CPAP, but not sure what to buy. Found some potentially promising devices, over 1000€. I might be able to buy them, though I'd prefer of course that my health insurance covers it (but that would take 2+ months). Interested in any case in learning, even if I might not buy yet.

I also discovered oximeter rings in Amazon, which have a function to vibrate if levels are too low, which are in the 100-200€ range so more suitable as transitory solution. Though here also I don't know how to identify good ones. Considered buying an Apple Watch instead but so far I read it's not as good. Any advice appreciated.

In general, I'd appreciate any feedback, from tricks to bridge the time until my appointment, to device recommendations, related experiences (does it get better with CPAP, have you recovered to the point of not needing a device, was it connected to another illness, have you also experienced memory loss, etc?). Whatever you want to contribute. Thanks!

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Insomnia is ruining my relationship with my dad.

I am 15, have a lot of stress on me all the time as my Dad works most of the time in the military. I can’t sleep at night so first he took my electronics at night, which help with the feeling of overwhelming lonely ness at night because I had friends to talk to, or music to listen to. I’m a nervous wreck at night too, so music helps. I respect my dad a lot. I know he works hard. I was pretty mad at him for taking my things. I tried to sleep, but the problem wasn’t the electronics and I knew it. Now he just yells and screams at me when I wake up. And the reason is because I have a sleep disorder known as β€œconfusional arousals.” My dad doesn’t not believe in literally any type of disorder. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was younger and he still pretends it never happened and always asks me why I forget things. I apparently take a long time to wake up because I’m told I cuss at people in the morning. I only remember waking up and gaining consciousness. So waking up to yelling is really hard. I didn’t just come here to complain, although it helps. If anyone has any knowledge of how I could convince my father or fix this, that would be great. Ignore my username lol, I made it when I was happy.
