A list of puns related to "Close Combat"
In the real world, I don't imagine it's as easy as "red team vs blue team". Both might be wearing camouflage or when the two sides finally clash, your similar-looking enemy might be behind you or next to you, so you shoot them dead, but in all the confusion, that was actually one of your comrades.
How did people differentiate their comrades and enemies in all the chaos without being attacked first as the hint?

The users of my cultivation / power system should only be really effective when in melee.
I am doing this for balance purposes (and for contrast with another magic system in-world)
They basically gain access to more speed, resilence, strength and so on, scaling with the cultivation/power level. There is more to it, but this is what matters with regard to my question.
All fine, but then I noticed something: If they are super-strong, with a suitable weapon they would be even stronger.
And if effective range is their most glaring weakness, what prevents them from using ranged weapons to bridge the gap?
Throw a spear with super-strength and super-speed... you get the idea.
What I came up with so far:
> Items lack robustness: Their powerful strikes / throws would damage the weapon or tool. But that can be circumvented with proper designs and without the need for low weight. And even a one-shot ranged weapon would severly damage my intended balance.
> Training Issues: Since they mostly fight other users of the same system who are agile and fast aswell, items could make them too slow. So they just don't train with them. But would that be a good enough reason when you fight those other ranged guys on a regular basis (and for high stakes?)
> Just make it so: Basically make them only effective in melee and don't mention it. Most of the time the right tactic, but this one is a bit too glaring for my taste.
What are your thoughts? Do you have a better idea?
EDIT / ADD: For anyone still reading the OP, I thank you all for the great answers!
Curious on your close quarters combat tekkers
Comment on the specific weapon and attachments in comments.
Only cqb there is that I can remember is Arena in Kaleidoscope and maybe rooftops. I always loved Inantry gamemodes and especially Metro in BF4
I know this is a very general question and there are lots of different armies that have this option (e.g. Boyz with slugga and choppa OR shootas, Space Marines with Boltgun OR pistol and chainsword, etc). But are there any cases where you'd run a squad contain a mixture of close combat and ranged options? Given that most stratagems seem to favour one or the other?
Most lists I see on here seem to have squads equipped exclusively one way or the other and my thinking is mixing a squad just confuses it's what that squad is intended for.
I'm my specific case I'm thinking of Chaos Space Marines, where there seems to be little to choose between a close combat focused squad or a Boltgun squad (both seem fairly ineffective compared to other options) and I can't see any benefit of mixing weapon loadouts.
So I have been trying to put together a subclass for a wizard to use with a character that I am porting over from an old campaign. The character was a Paladin but grew tired of relying on anyone but himself for his power and also started studying both magic and ancient high magic civilizations. So because of this, he is a rune knight base, multi-classed with wizard. The issue I ran into is that none of the archetypes for wizards I've found really fit thematically. I want to base the archetype off of runes, similar to that of the rune knight, but instead of Giants, I think Fey, Celestial, or even Abyssal would be better so there isn't any overlap between the subclasses. The world this character is a part of is a homebrew world my close friend and I have been developing. The concept is that one of his characters from 3.5 who was OP gleams into other dimensions and offers heroes and villains that he finds interesting the opportunity to come to his dimension. He does this by asking for a small piece of their soul, which he uses to remake them in his dimension. He also asks if there are any changes that they would want to make. This doesn't affect the character in that dimension but gives the player a chance to play characters that they miss or felt they possibly didn't get the full extent out of.
Back to the subclass: I know the casting ability will be Int, but I don't know if I want the features all to be Int-based as well. Instead of drawing runes on gear like the rune knight, I was thinking of having the features be geared more like spells, using a mix of actions, bonus actions and, reactions. I also have this image in my mind of using some sort of focus to draw the runes in the air similar to Dr. Strange.
If anyone has any ideas or even a subclass that they have already made, any help would be appreciated.
