Buon Giorno.

Frog

La Pavoni Europiccola

Edit: All of your answers are great, thanks for the input

I just discovered the Caffè Americano at Starbucks and it is delicious. It's just diluted espresso, but it's so great. I don't alter it in any way, just drink it straight. With coffee I usually add some half & half to soften it up but the americano has such a great flavor that I don't want to mess with it.

What I'm wondering is: how much difference is there between coffee beans and espresso beans? At home I brew regular coffee with Lavazza Super Crema espresso roast and it's very good. But I wonder if running the same beans through the espresso process will make it better. Beans vs. processing?

Moka pot Caffè Americano?

Being lactose intolerant, I've developed an appreciation for the simple Americano.

An espresso machine is far outside of my price range, but I've been looking at a Moka Pot for at home use. I know it isn't true espresso, but has anyone experimented with using it for a poor man's Americano?

If I order an espresso in a random Belgian restaurant, I get a Caffèe Americano (i.e. regular coffee with some foam on top) rather than a small, strong coffee. Is this a typically Belgian thing or can I expect this in other countries too? (The small coffee would be called “Mokka” here.)

Is this a nuisance thing to order? I've been getting odd looks.

I go to Hy-Vee for our bi-weekly grocery shopping and ours has a Starbucks inside. When we go, there aren't many folks in the store, no lines at the Starbucks, and I like to ask for either a double shot of espresso (blond or original, depending on what they have available - I'm not picky) or a Caffè Americano. But a few of the baristas sometimes hesitate and give me an uncertain look before continuing on with the purchase.

I have social anxiety, so instead of asking them if I did something wrong, I just assume I must be asking for something absurd? I'm thinking of just asking next time I go in, but I figured I'd ask here if this is something annoying to make? I make espresso at home and know it takes a bit to grind, tamp, and pull the shots so supposed I do understand the annoyance.

Aahh.

Do the French know what an americano is?

I have just got back from a holiday in France. Twice I ordered an americano and twice I received a negroni (which is quite the switch to receive at like 10 in the morning.)

These were from different places and at least one of them looked like it should have known better. Do the French do things differently or was I just unlucky?

Have you ever imagined the rampant coffee breath that must plague the kpop community?

The mere thought of it haunts my dreams. And we all know the number one culprit: iced americanos. I've seen it, you've seen it, we've all seen it at every fansign, backstage waiting room clip, music video behind the scenes, etc.: that ominous cup of dark liquid just sitting there, waiting to be enthusiastically sipped by your favorite idol.

Iced americanos aren't even tasty-- at a certain point I just have to think that so many idols drink them to follow the trend. But at what cost?? AT WHAT COST?!? Take a minute to think about the pungent haze of coffee breath that must exist in the company vans as idols travel from schedule to schedule. The horror! Just look at this poor, defenseless paper doll being victimized by the evils of coffee breath (I'll bet that Starbucks cup had a hot caffè americano in it, too)!

I honestly have thought about this so many times in the past decade that I've been into kpop. At this point, I should just start a fundraiser to buy travel mouthwash for all these poor idols. Coffee breath is a menace that must be eradicated! >:-(

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Looking for guidance on a serious, but entry level machine for an aspiring enthusiast

Hi all,

Excited to join the group. Always been a coffee lover, did french press for years and then a spell with a Breville Roma and then inherited a used Saeco Syntia Automatic which I've been using for the past 4 years.

Recently it's been acting up and my efforts to fix it have only made it worse and so I've been pondering making the change to a semi-automatic machine.

I have a number of friends with Rockets and they're awesome but unfortunately my circumstances (and my wife) do not allow me to invest $2500+taxes into just a machine, especially considering I'm in the market for a grinder as well.

I'm located in Montreal, Canada and there is a well known store that services and sells all sorts of equipment espresso related. They sell Rancilios, Gaggias, La Pavonis, Rockets and more.

I've been looking at the La Pavoni Gran Caffè GCM for $650+tax. The price is manageable (I know, that's not much) and La Pavoni seems to be a reputable brand. I cannot find much in the way of reviews however.

A friend who owns a Rocket also recommended the Breville 870XL as being an overperformer for its price (about $650 as well) and to boot it includes a grinder...now I know it can't be a great grinder but it would be more appealing to my wife if I could get both devices for that price and have them in a single package that takes up less counter space. We live in an apartment so her feelings are warranted.

I've also looked locally at the used market and seen some Rancilio Silvias for sale for around $500-600...I've always heard good things about the brand and I'm not against buying used. The price for a new Silvia is about $1000+tax and that's getting a bit rich for us.

Could anyone give me some solid ideas about any of these three options? I would appreciate first hand experience, not even as an owner but just as someone who's used one or had espresso made for them with one. My wife likes allongés and lattes, I tend towards americanos myself. We currently buy Lavazza Crema E Aroma whole beans for use with our Syntia, they're a medium roast that is probably on the darker side of medium, not oily so my Saeco liked them and the coffee was consistent. Open to expanding my horizons but that bean was a winner for me the past couple of years.

Thanks in advance!
