Question about bicep brachii and gluteus medius
  1. I've learned, that to maximally activate bicep brachii during dumbbell curl, wrist must be supinated, that during pronated curls bicep brachii is in a disadvantageous position. But since it attaches to radius and also causes supination, like in this video at 2:29 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDOqKxYoy1w , should one do dumbbell biceps curls starting from fully pronated wrist at the bottom to fully supinated at the top to get maximal muscle concentric and eccentric loading for hypertrophy and injury prevention?

  2. Should one train gluteus medius separately in addition to squats and lunges? The front part of gluteus medius aids in hip flexion and posterior part in hip extension. I know it is isometrically active during lunges and other single leg exercises, but should we also load the middle part of gluteus medius dynamically for hypertrophy, athletic performance and injury prevention?

Advice on preventing bicep brachii tendon tears in the deadlift.

After having witness these a couple of times, I'm a little bit concerned (paranoid, even) about this happening to me. According to Delavier's "Strength Training Anatomy", this occurs when the inferior tendon pulls away from where the muscle inserts into the humerus. Later on, Delavier states that "It is possible to prevent this injury by working the biceps to strengthen its tendon. For this reason add forearm flexion isolations using a bar in a series of "cheats" by leaning the chest back to give the bar a boost.

Can anyone explain exactly what that means, and if it makes sense as a method of preventing these tears?

Thanks.

Disc Golf Anatomy Academy Part 2: Biceps and Triceps- a more important contraction than Kona's and Ricky's.

Elbow Backhand! Wall of Text Incoming!

TL;DR is at the end!

Hello again r/discgolf, Mattfofatt here with your next dose of Anatomy Academy. I appreciate all of the positive responses to the first post and will be likely doing 1-2 posts per week. I will try to keep some sort of consistency with it topics, but if something comes up that I want to get some info on ie. pro injuries, reader questions I may throw some different stuff out there.

Jumping back into the Disc Golf Anatomy Academy we will continue to look at the elbow but from a different perspective, the backhand. The backhand is one of the most unfamiliar disc golf movement to many people who don’t start from a very young age.

Typically, the first throw that we learn as children is your typical baseball style throw. During a baseball throw we step forward with our contralateral (opposite side) foot, we cock back with our throwing arm, we bring our weight onto our front foot as our trailing leg and hip move forwards and our arm swings towards our target. Throughout most of this movement we are facing towards our target and we follow through onto ipsilateral (same side) foot and the arm swings through. This does not resemble a backhand DG toss at all.

The throw in DG that this type of movement closely resembles is a tomahawk or thumber. The best tommy throwers I’ve ever seen were former baseball pitchers.

One movement that does resemble a backhand frisbee throw is the baseball swing, but there is another problem with that. While the movement itself is very similar to a baseball swing, it is basically a swing coming from their non-dominant side. A righty batter typically has their left shoulder anterior (in front) when they stand to bat, and they perform a move very similar to a backhand thrown and follow through with their left arm. Now when a new righty player gets a disc in their hand and are told to throw backhand they have to attempt to emulate a non-dominant swing.

Backhand form is some of the most variable amongst players, and it is one that is practiced repeatedly. With this repeated practice comes the increased risk for overuse.

There are a lot of areas that can be aggravated with the backhand throw as you all probably know, however today we will be focusing on some of the muscles that flex and extend the elbow, the biceps brachii and the triceps brachii complex.

[Well get into the forearm muscles in a later post don't worry.](https://preview.redd.it/nefxqktvxhb81.png?width=

Techno's Surgery Timeline I expect to be screenshotted onto Twitter because it is *concise* and because that's how twitter works

EARLY OCTOBER:

  • Talks to surgeon. Vibe is that amputation is necessary.
  • [Chemo cancelled here, probably]

(+2 weeks):

  • Doctors get together, embolization procedure, sealed off 80% of blood flow, very painful. Reason for no October content.

(+1 week):

  • Meeting with oncologist. He says techno's arm will be fine.

(+3 days):

  • Radiation therapist discusses with surgeon, goes over post embolisation scan, tumour is swelling due to it dying off. We need to amputate next week and it might be too late.
  • Surgeon calls mid appt to schedule appointment

(+Few days):

  • Arm amputation appears on schedule on Nov 8. Causing Techno to cancel his MCC all stars appearance
  • Appointment with surgeon, and surgeon suggests 2 options. Limb salvage or four quarter amputation. Amputation doesn't increase survival odds
  • Surgeon refers to scan (SAME ONE that shows a swelling tumour) and says situation is pretty safe to postpone 10 days.

EARLY NOV, MCC ALL STARS (13 NOV) AROUND HERE 1 MONTH SINCE surgery is talked about

(+1 week):

  • Meeting with surgeon
  • Cancer next to right brachial plexus about 2mm away, brachial plexus
  • Need to postpone 2 weeks because plastic surgeons are busy
  • Chemo cancelled due to surgery, had already gone a month about it. Another 2.5 weeks without treatment (Later that week):
  • Immunotherapy started

(+2 weeks): EARLY DECEMBER

  • Surgery in the very early morning and worst week of his life.
  • Left leg can't move
  • Shoulder reconstruction NOT from lat dorsi
  • Technoblade woken every hour
  • R pec major pec minor biceps brachii, 20% deltoid 30% vastus lateralis R clavicle

Minimum and the best number of sets for muscle mass - Based on science

Hello guys.

This sub is one of the first places where I started my journey with workouts in general. People here were very helpful, I've learnt a lot from them. I wanna say thank you and now it's my turn to share with you my experience. I've learnt a lot since then, read a lot of researches, because that's the main source that I'm learning from.

I'd like to start a series of posts about... everything related with muscle and strength building etc. Everything is based on science literature.

I leave a link to my instagram at the end of the post. You can find there this post with pics. I'll be grateful if you give me a like, follow and share it with friends :) I hope that I won't be banned because of that.

TL;DR + summary at the end :)

More sets = better?

Minimum and the best number of sets for noticeable results

Do more sets will always mean better results? Is there a maximum number of sets per workout/week? How to choose the right number of sets if our goal is muscle growth?

Many people find it difficult to choose the right number of sets. It used to be difficult for me as well. First let's find out what factors affect the number of sets.

Factors affecting the number of sets

*This is a bit simplified and assumes that the rest of things remain the same and the only variable is the issue being described.

1.Number of workouts per week. Example: we've got 3 workouts per week, on each of them we do 4 sets of push ups (12 sets of push ups per week in total). Suddenly something happened in our life and now we have time for only 2 workouts. If we expect the same results as before we should increase the number of sets per workout to 6 so we still have 12 sets in total per week.

2.Reps in reserve (RIR). In general it's not the best idea to do each set to failure. Someone who does this, e.g. in each set does as much push ups as he/she can will not be able to (and probably shouldn't) as many sets as someone who keeps a rep or two (or more) in reserve ("tank").

3.Recovery. Someone who sleeps well and enough, who don't stress as much in general in life will be able to recover better from harder workout.

4.Energy availability. The more calories we eat, the more we can do.

5.Training experience. Someone who is just starting their adventure with resistance training doesn't regenerate as well as someone who has several years of experience.

6.Drugs usage. External "boosters" allow us to do more and harder workouts in general.

What to Know and Expect from Surgery for Marcus

Hello fellow Reds,

It has been a while since I posted on this sub (previously under u/PDubsinTF). My account was locked due to an error occurring during my 2FA registration (Reddit Customer Support are bots). I thought I could spend some time discussing Dr. Rashford’s injury, the decision to get surgery, and what that means for his timeline to return.

Quick background for street cred. US Red, certified athletic trainer, certified strength and conditioning specialist, corrective exercise specialist, PhD in exercise physiology, previous work experience in out-patient orthopedic rehabilitation, collegiate football (American), and collegiate soccer (also dabbled with some local semi-pro teams), university lecturer of anatomy and physiology, research director at sports medicine/orthopedic clinic.

**DISCLAIMER: This is not medical advice. Every surgeon’s protocols are different. Every injury is a little different. Every patient is different. The extent of the damage could be better or worse than what the medical staff anticipated before surgery.**

Anatomy Review of Rotator Cuff

Supraspinatus

-Runs from scapular origin to greater tuberosity superiorly

-Depresses, stabilizes/centralizes humeral head on glenoid with elevation/abduction

Infraspinatus

-Runs from the posterior scapular body to the posterior greater tuberosity

-Primary action is to externally rotate the humerus

Teres Minor

-Runs from lower/posterior scapular border to inferior portion of posterior greater tuberosity

-minor external rotator of the humerus

Subscapularis

-Runs from anterior scapula to lesser tuberosity anteriorly

-Strong internal rotator of the humerus

Two other possible muscles injured, although unlikely:

Biceps brachii

-Muscle contributes to shoulder flexion, elbow flexion, shoulder stabilizer, and forearm supination (sometimes implicated with labral tears).

Triceps brachii

-Muscle contributes to shoulder extension, elbow extension, and shoulder stabilizer.

Important Definitions

Muscle injury (in this instance) = muscle strain = muscle tear = muscle pull

Full-thickness tear = complete disruption of the muscle belly or tendon (e.g., no longer connected), also referred to as a Grade 3 muscle strain.

Partial-thickness tear = the tear does not span ac

Building stronger biceps starts with strategic training: β€œ10 Commandments Of Biceps Training”

There are a ton of different ways to build big, strong biceps, and there’s really no one definitive way to do so. In fact, when Broses passed down the 10 Commandments of Biceps Training to all of his fellow lifters he made a point to be creative with training and to enjoy it along the way.

These commandments are guidelines or best practices when trying to build big, strong arms, and by no means should be taken as an end all be all. So do they need to be followed to a tee? Not necessarily, but they could be useful to keep in mind when building effective arm workouts for the biceps.

It’s also worth noting that there are vast differences in various coaches and athletes’ training ideologies when it comes to building arms, so that’s also important to factor in reading the commandments below!

  1. Thou Shalt Not Ignore Thy Muscle Function

Effective arm training starts with a base understanding of what the biceps do and what their functions are. Understanding this can lead to better positioning and strategy behind exercises and methods of loading.

The anterior upper arm includes four muscles that are worth knowing: biceps brachii, brachialis, brachioradialis, coracobrachialis. The biceps brachii are a biarticular muscle, which means they pass two joints (shoulder and elbow) and have two primary heads (long and short).

Anterior Upper Arm Muscles and Their Function

(webcomic spoilers) Limiter chapter

When Dr. Genus is explaining the limiter to Zombieman he explains monsters and heroes. It seems like the paneling is hinting at things.

  • In the panel with humans who turn into monsters through psychological complexes we see Marugori. Does that mean Biceps Brachii King didn't really monsterize him?
  • In the panel with non-human living things turning into monsters surprisingly Piggy Bancon appears. But not Vaccine Man since this panel talks about environmental pollution as a cause.
  • Sweet Mask is absent from the heroes panel which makes sense in hindsight.

It's already been pointed out that Vaccine Man might be connected to God. But Piggy Bancon and Marugori are interesting to me do to their connection to Saitama. Piggy Bancon is the first monster Saitama ever encountered and years later owns a piggy bank that looks like it. Marugori also shared Saitama's goal of being the strongest and felt Saitama's emptiness also the source of his strength might be in question.

Isometric angle myth debunked

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9961/

I find that a lot of people say a problem with isometrics is it only trains 15-30 degrees of where the static hold is, and because of that it doesn't build strength for full ROM making it inferior to dynamic exercises. Interestingly enough this myth started being spread around bodybuilding forums due to misinformation and also because isometrics went against the status queue. This led to widespread misinformation regarding the viability of isometrics for overall strength due to the belief it didn't increase all of your strength. Since then angle theory studies have been examined it were found when accounting for leverage, isometrics gave the same strength gains across the full ROM as dynamic exercise. Muscles done change where they are affixed to they are always stuck to fixed points by the tendons, it doesn't matter where you are in a loft, you are working your entire muscle, meaning whether it be dynamic, or isometric, you are strengthening your entire ROM. Many studies have been put out now supporting this, along with the fact isometric exercises recruit up tl 10% more muscle fibers then dynamic exercise leading to better strength gains on account of larger muscle recruitment. I wanted to post this as a saw many posts on this forum pushing the angle myth In regards to isometric exercises.

A large number of studies supporting what I said below, copy and pasted from different places and on my phone so excuse the formatting

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
