Ammonium‐Ion Storage Using Electrodeposited Manganese Oxides

NH4+ storage using electrodeposited manganese oxides (MnO x ) is studied for the first time. MnO x exhibits structural transformation during charge/discharge in dilute ammonium acetate (NH4Ac) electrolyte. Experimental and theoretical results suggest that the reversible NH4+ insertion/deinsertion in layered MnO x is associated with hydrogen‐bond formation/breaking between NH4+ and the MnO x layers.

Abstract

NH4+ ions as charge carriers show potential for aqueous rechargeable batteries. Studied here for the first time is the NH4+‐storage chemistry using electrodeposited manganese oxide (MnO x ). MnO x experiences morphology and phase transformations during charge/discharge in dilute ammonium acetate (NH4Ac) electrolyte. The NH4Ac concentration plays an important role in NH4+ storage for MnO x . The transformed MnOx with a layered structure delivers a high specific capacity (176β€…mAh gβˆ’1) at a current density of 0.5β€…A gβˆ’1, and exhibits good cycling stability over 10 000β€…cycles in 0.5β€…M NH4Ac, outperforming the state‐of‐the‐art NH4+ hosting materials. Experimental results suggest a solid‐solution behavior associated with NH4+ migration in layered MnO x . Spectroscopy studies and theoretical calculations show that the reversible NH4+ insertion/deinsertion is accompanied by hydrogen‐bond formation/breaking between NH4+ and the MnO x layers. These findings provide a new prototype (i.e., layered MnOx) for NH4+‐based energy storage and contributes to the fundamental understanding of the NH4+‐storage mechanism for metal oxides.

ELI5: Why are alkali, ammonium and some complex ions such water soluteable?

Most salts of Sodium, other alkali metals and both inorganic and organic ammonium ions are well water soluteable. The only insoluetable sodium salts I found had obscure complexes as counter anions like hexa hydroxido antimonate (V).

Why is that the case? Why are most calcium salts far less soluteable? I already know that the energy of solution has to be higher than the energy of the salt structure, but why do the mentioned cations make such low energy structures?

And why are many complex ions also water soluteable? For example, AgCl will participate our, but Na[AgCl2] gets into solution. Same with sulfides and sulfide complexes like HgS and HgS complexes. Same situation again with calcium citrate and dicratocalciumate complex. Why?

MDMA purity and the "84% max purity" claim (please stop this!)

Background: There are many people over the years that claim MDMA can only have a maximum purity of 84%. This is, both loosely and strictly speaking, not true.

The max 84% MDMA purity claim is a conceptual plague among drug buyers born of idiocy, misunderstanding, and rumor which only confuses unknowledgeable people and annoys knowledgeable people. It is an odd paradigm which should not be propagated any further.

Why do people claim this?

I suspect there are two reasons:

  1. I think analytical drug testing labs, such as those available to the public in Europe, give test results to users who misinterpreted the data they received from the lab.
  2. The above misinterpretation of the lab data is readily repeated by dealers who are more than happy to make this claim when they are selling an impure MDMA.

Does the max 84% purity claim have any basis? Yes, but it is not sane or useful to talk about MDMA purity this way. Here is the underlying reason for the claim:

MDMA (free base - brown, amber, or off-white oil)
Chemical formula: C11H15NO2
Molar mass: 193.246 gΒ·molβˆ’1

hydrogen chloride (strongly acidic - colorless gas)
Chemical formula: HCl
Molar mass: 36.46 g/mol

The above acid and base each ionize and combine via an ionic bond to form this salt:

MDMAΒ·HCl (solid salt - translucent to white crystals)
ionic components of that totally pure, anhydrous salt:
MDMA ion: 84.127536939 % of the salt's mass
HCl ion: 15.872463061 % of the salt's mass

So claiming your MDMA is "84% pure", in this weird way of thinking about chemical purity, is exactly equivalent to claiming that your MDMAΒ·HCl is 99.8484% pure and that it's anhydrous (not likely), which is pretty much so pure it's unheard of unless a lot of time was spent cleaning it up.

Nevermind that MDMAΒ·hydrochloride salt bonding is not quite that simple, in fact, as the H from HCl bonds with the MDMA's nitrogen atom to form an ammonium cation and Cl- is the countering anion. That fact alone annihilates this whole 84% max purity claim since, in this salt form, MDMA technically no longer exists, even as an ion - it has formed an MDMAmphetamonium ion, but we can ignore this inconvenient fact and refute the claim on its own terms.

As I briefly mentioned, if the resulting salt (MDMAΒ·HCl) is one of the hydrates or a solvate (and thus is not

$AMMP - AmmPower

Read an article on the hydrogen boom and some companies that will benefit from it. AmmPower was mentioned as the #2 pick because of the ammonium industry’s huge potential.

  • Ammonia has 9x energy capacity compared to lithium-ion and is 1.8x more energy-dense compared to hydrogen
  • Strong scientific team with a former NASA engineer at the helm
  • Plans to build modular, scalable, stackable green ammonia-producing units that can be used by many different industries depending on the need
  • Ammonia production currently stands at 180M tn/yr but could be a multi-billion tn/yr industry if $AMMP is successful with its ammonia technology
  • Ammonia is already accepted in 120+ ports and the industry is expected to reach $70B+ by 2027

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/3-Stocks-To-Watch-As-The-Hydrogen-Boom-Takes-Off.html

Without a doubt, this decade is going to be big for the green hydrogen/green ammonia industries. And $AMMP has been grinding over the past few months

  • Added several extremely experienced members to the advisory board
  • Entered into an agreement to acquire Hydrogen One
  • Split into 2 divisions: Lithium and Mineral Resources + Ammonia and Alternative Energy

IMO, $AMMP is here to stay. With all the recent news and growth in their sector, $AMMP has huge growth potential. I’ll be holding my shares for a while.

Nepenthes Secret H+ to acidify their pitcher fluids to facilitate the uptake of Nitrogenous compounds

From: https://academic.oup.com/aob A Paper Review Titled: "Quite a few reasons for calling carnivores β€˜the most wonderful plants in the world’" written By ElzΛ™bieta KroΒ΄l, Bartosz J. PΕ‚achno, LubomΔ±Β΄r Adamec, Maria Stolarz, Halina Dziubin and Kazimierz TreΛ›bacz

They talk at length of the different mechanisms by which Carnivorous plants consume their prey. It mentions the different ways that Nepenthes are fertilized and, I thought, that this portion was of particular interest:

SECRETION AND ABSORPTION

Darwin (1875) was the first to show that carnivorous plants secrete their digestive fluid in response to nitrogenous substances. Among these substances, uric acid (the principal constituent of insect faeces) and glutamine (the major amino acid of insect haemolymph) turned out to be the most effective elicitors of secretion (Robins, 1976). In Dionaea, repetitive electrical or mechanical stimulation evokes enzyme secretion, too (K. TreΛ›bacz and E. KroΒ΄l, unpubl. res.). Thus, APs can also be considered as elicitors of secretion. Once stimulated, the gland cells undergo a cycle of ultrastructural changes generally divided into two phases, the secretory and the resorptive (Heslop-Harrison and Heslop-Harrison, 1981). During the secretory phase, cell wall erodes, plasmalemma becomes less invaginated and vacuoles shrink (pointing to their involvement in enzyme storage and release), but de novo protein synthesis also takes place (Robins and Juniper, 1980b; McNally et al., 1988). In general, mucilage-secreting cells discharge the Golgi-originated bodies [Drosera (Outenreath and Dauwalder, 1982a)], while the exocytosis of digestive enzymes involves a membrane fusion with storage vesicles of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) origin [Pinguicula (Vassilyev and Muravnik, 1988a, b), Genlisea (PΕ‚achno et al., 2007), Drosera (Heslop-Harrison, 1976), Dionaea (Robins and Juniper, 1980c)]. A split between mucilage- and enzymesecreting glands has been reported for Lamiales (Pinguicula, Utricularia, Byblis) and for some Droseraceae sensu lato [Drosophyllum (Heslop-Harrison and Knox, 1971; Juniper et al., 1989; Legendre, 2002a, PΕ‚achno et al., 2006)]. On the other hand, there are reports of glands secreting polysaccharides and proteolytic enzymes at the same time, for example Pinguicula (LuΒ¨ttge, 1971) and Dionaea (Robins and Juniper, 1980c). Although Pinguicula’s sessile glands were presumed

Library Creation of Ultrasmall Multi‐metallic Nanoparticles Confined in Mesoporous MFI Zeolites

A library of ultrasmall multi-metallic nanoparticles confined in both micro- and mesopores of molecular sieves was created by the trifunctional templating route.

Abstract

The development of materials integrated with ultrasmall multi-metal nanoparticles (UMMNs) and mesoporous zeolite is a considerable challenge in chemistry and materials science. We designed a trifunctional surfactant, in which the pyridyl benzimidazole in the hydrophobic tail generates the mesopores through π–π stacking; the diquaternary ammonium in the hydrophilic headgroup direct the formation of MFI zeolite sheets and the nitrogen atoms in the heterocyclic rings coordinate with various metal ions to form UMMNs confined in the zeolite matrix after calcination and reduction. A library of 56 UMMNs confined within both micropores and mesopores of MFI zeolites (MMZs) with 4 mono-, 14 bi- and 38 tri-metallic nanoparticles (sizes of 1.3–4.7β€…nm) of combinations of Rh, Pd, Pt, Au, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn were made. An improved catalytic performance was exhibited in the sequence of Rh-MMZ
