I was diagnosed with CRPS about a year ago. I tried physical therapy and pain meds among other things, and nothing made a huge difference. About 2 and a 1/2 months in my pain doctor at the University of Miami prescribed Alendronate. Usually used for osteoporosis it had showed some promise as an experimental treatment for CRPS. About 3 weeks into taking Alendronate my symptoms had nearly disappeared. No discoloration, no unbearable pain. I’ve been symptom free ever since. My doctor said if there’s ever a flare up to take it again for two weeks. I haven’t had to do that, crossing my fingers. I was already dealing with chronic pain from a tethered spinal cord and arachnoiditis. I realize I am extremely lucky. I think going to a teaching hospital is a good thing. I wish everyone here the best of luck with their treatment.
If you want to space everything out per recommendations, it'll be at least 90 minutes until the patient can eat in the morning. Even if they're on just Omeprazole + levothyroxine then it's an hour. Seems a bit extreme imo. Any alternative recommendations?

I'm not sure whether my mother should take them or not, because she has calcium deficiency. I'm afraid if they could aggravate my mother's bone spurs.

Hi all,
Had a lady come in to show me her broken Alendronate tablet today. Normally I would just replace the tablet, but in this case Alendronate ONLY comes in packs of 4 and we ONLY ever dispense it in packs of 4. If I gave out 1 tablet, I'd have a pack of 3 on the shelf that I would never be able to get rid of.
Since the tablet was exactly broken into 2 pieces, I hopped onto Clinical Pharmacology to check the Do Not Split list. Alendronate isn't on there, so I'm guessing the pills are OK to split? I told her it should be OK to take, just follow the usual advice and wash it down with a full glass of water, no lying down, etc.
She's still hesitant, so I tried to run it through her insurance and turns out they'll pay for a refill in 3 days, in time for her next dose. She says that's OK and leaves, but later that night I get a call from her daughter, who I guess is a pharmacist or doctor or some kind of medical person. She's upset and saying I gave her bad advice because it says not to crush.
I guess this is the crux of the question. Is there a difference between splitting and crushing? Obviously. But does that mean some drugs are safe to split but not to crush? If not, then why aren't all the drugs on the Do Not Crush list also on the Do Not Split list? Did I give bad advice? I didn't force her to take it, gave her the alternative of waiting for the refill. I could potentially follow up with the manufacturer and see if they are willing to send me a replacement tablet. I know we have been able to get replacement Lantus (vial exploded in the fridge) and replacement inhalers (ProAir that weren't functional). Would manufacturer replace 1 broken tablet?
Has anyone else tried this? I've been put on a daily dose of this for a 6 week course. I'm curious to hear others experiences.
Will I be in pain? I won't be able to refill my scrip until a week from now, and I had to miss my dose today. What's the worst that could happen?
