AskScience AMA Series: We're Cheryl Bowman, Deputy Branch Chief for High Temperature and Smart Alloys, and Sean Clarke, Principal Investigator, X-57 Maxwell Experimental Aircraft. We are part of the NASA team that is developing new technology for Electrified Aircraft. Ask us anything.

Join us today at 2 p.m. ET (19 UT) to ask anything about NASA's recent technology developments for Electrified Aircraft Propulsion - the use of propulsors (propellers or fans) driven by electric motors to propel or help propel aircraft ranging from air taxis to subsonic transports. From developing technology to aircraft concepts to flight testing, we're working toward a new generation of aircraft with a lower carbon footprint.

  • We built and tested a lithium-ion battery pack that uses Space Station technologies to improve safety and reliability - already being used in other experimental aircraft!
  • We've doubled the temperature capability of soft magnetics for flight electronics.
  • We will soon be flight testing the all-electric X-57 Maxwell Experimental Aircraft in a 2-motor, 150 kW mode followed by a 14-motor, 300 kW flight test on a high-performance wing.
  • We are using what we learn on experimental aircraft and in laboratories to help write the design and test standards for electric propulsion system in future passenger aircraft.
  • We can't wait to answer your questions on how we're turning this idea from science fiction to reality.

Participants include:

  • Cheryl Bowman, Deputy Branch Chief for High Temperature and Smart Alloys
  • Sean Clarke, Principal Investigator, X-57 Maxwell Experimental Aircraft and Advanced Systems Development Engineer

Inverse inertia and principal inertia axes

I have an object that calculates it's forces inside _integrate_forces, so I have access to these variables (on PhysicsDirectBodyState), as well as the angular velocity (which is in global space by default)

What I'd like to do is figure out how much torque I need to apply (in object local space) to stop it from rotating

how should I do this?

Using a rudder appears to have an β€˜elastic band’ effect where the aircraft moves back to its initial yaw position after engaging. This effect is not so pronounced (or absent) with the roll and pitch axes. Why is this?

Also is this desirable or is it a limit of the control surface?

I am imagine having a yaw movement that stays in place would be amazing for turns.

P.S. This is from my experience in MS Flight Sim; haven’t actually flown (yet).

I'm looking for Boeing employees from the 1970s who transitioned into making outdoor gear: ice axes & frame packs made from aircraft aluminum tubes, fiberglass tent poles etc. More info in comments.

Hello friends, I'm putting together a podcast about the history and evolution of making mountain climbing and outdoor gear in the Pacific Northwest.

I've learned that a major influence in the early days of this was the 1970s downturn in the aerospace industry in Seattle, which sent a lot of folks to use their skills in making outdoor recreation equipment.

If you, or a family member, or someone you know was part of this era, I would love to hear from you. Thank you!

Two different throttles (TWCS Throttle and Saitek Pro Flight Quadrant) always pitch/roll the A-10C and F/A-18C, and it's driving me crazy. For both, even when all axes are unbound, the "default" X/Y for each throttle always pitch/roll the aircraft. But F-14B or Harrier work fine and I'm stumped.

I have spent a couple weeks on this, giving up several times and swearing off DCS altogether, but I'm finally frustrated enough to ask for help. I have this hardware:

My issue is that the "mini-joystick" on the front-facing part of the TWCS throttle handle, and the 2 left-most levers on the Saitek throttle ALWAYS pitch/roll the A-10C and F/A-18C, even when they are not bound to anything under those specific aircraft and under "General". I can "Clear category" or "Reset category to default" all day for "All" and "Axis Commands" across the board but still, throttle inputs control pitch/roll. The TM Warthog stick also pitches/rolls without being explicitly bound in these aircraft.

However, I do NOT have this problem with the Heatblur F-14B or Razbam AV8-B. Those aircraft "respect" these throttle inputs correctly when bound, do not "confuse" one device's X/Y for another, and they do nothing when unbound, as expected.

What I have tried:

  • Different USB hubs
  • Connecting all devices directly to motherboard USB ports
  • TM T.A.R.G.E.T software to combine devices into one virtual controller. (p.s. I am certain this issue existed before using T.A.R.G.E.T -- it's the whole reason I tried it.)
  • Only having 1 throttle connected at a time

I find it hard to believe this is just a bug or incompatibility with the most available throttles on the market and the most popular native aircraft in DCS. Do I simply need the TM Warthog throttle for DCS? Is that what everyone here uses? Can't find any in stock so that's not an option right now unfortunately.

What else can I try? Reinstalling DCS (never used the Steam version btw) from scratch? What am I overlooking or not understanding here?

Last notes:

- I'm not necessarily interested in having both throttles connected though it is useful for the F-14 (Direct Lift Control) and Harrier (nozzle vectoring) so far. Honestly I bought the Saitek throttle just to see if the same problems persisted and they do.

- These throttles and my Warthog stick show up normally in the Windows 10 "Game Controllers" panel. They pass all axis-movement and button-pressing tests in that UI. I've also double-checked that Windows is correctly attributing inputs to the cor

AITA for telling my daughter's principal about a teacher's rude behavior?

I'm Asian-American, mixed Japanese-Vietnamese, but both of my parents are second generations, so I'm more or less distracted from my ancestral heritage. My husband is Hungarian, he came to US a few months before we've met. We have two daughters, 8 and 5.

Our older daughter had a school project about her heritage. Her project's theme was Hungary, not only because my husband's heritage is technically closer to our children, but because half of her classmates are Asian too, so with Hungary, her project could be more unique. It was a classic, cute kids project you know, cardboard with pictures and short text, and we made Hungarian pancakes for the class. After my daughter's presentation, her teacher asked me if my husband is abusive. I was shocked, my first thought was that my daughter told something that the teacher misunderstood, but he told me that my daughter should have presented her Asian heritage and my husband seems to force his culture upon us. I explained our reasons calmly. After this, I immediately went to the principal's room and told him that the teacher's behavior is unacceptable.

Later I had a phone call from the teacher. He told me, that if I have any problem with him, I should tell him, not the principal, and I'm an annoying Karen.

What do you think?
