A list of puns related to "Yiddish grammar"
I am trying to find info about modern day Hasidic Yiddish as it is spoken in the US. As I come to udnerstand the grammar and vocabulary is a bit different. I am aware of some studies going on about Yiddish in UK Hasidic communities but nothing on the US. Does anyone here know more about this and can point me in the right direction?
I'm asking specifically about modern Yiddish spoken by native speakers in and around NYC.
Well, as the title says, I started learning a new alphabet last week. The alphabet is called Solitreo and it's a very old branch of Hebrew script used to write Ladino, also known as Djudeo-Espanyol. It is the language my family spoke for 500 years after fleeing Spain in the Spanish Inquisition, until they got to America. It is mostly Spanish, and follows Spanish grammar patterns, but occasionally includes a word from Turkish, Greek, Arabic, or Hebrew. I first had to learn the Hebrew alphabet (thanks quizlet), then Rashi, a form of the Hebrew alphabet used to write non Hebrew languages (such as Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, or Judeo-Arabic), and then I found a handy chart with the Solitreo letters written, copied them down, and started writing stuff! I practiced reading with my great grandma's journal, and was able to read it, albeit slowly. I am now able to write as well, which is pretty cool considering it could literally be used as a secret code with how few people know it. It was just such a cool feeling to be able to learn that quickly and on top of that put my new knowledge into practice with a text that is important to my family. I feel a little weird bragging about having some new almost useless skill but still. Feels good.
If you can read Hebrew, imagine this but written in scribbles (it's Spanish-ish)(I don't know a word of Hebrew though only the letters):
Χ ΧΧΧΧΧ ΧΧΧΧ ΧΧΧ Χ‘ΧΧΧ§Χ¨ΧΧΧΧ! ΧΧ Χ€ΧΧΧΧ Χ¨ΧΧ§Χ :)
TLDR; I learned a new alphabet and now I can read my great grandmas notebooks and write what is basically secret code and I feel really good about it.
Saw a post about how English might develop on the moon, so I decided to futurize Appalachian English, the dialect of which I grew up with. I think it's neat, likely needs some work, but this is a neat draft I reckon.
β (2030) Appalachian Language Society created, with intent to provide resources for Appalachian Languages (Appalachian English, Cherokee, Shawnee, etc.) Focuses on preserving more extreme varieties of Appalachian English.
β (2035) Appalachian Language Act passed, throughout Appalachia Appalachian English is used as the medium of education, with use of indigenous languages in indigenous communities. This program is met with approval from several people, and literacy rates increase throughout Appalachia.
β (2045) In order to create more awareness for indigenous tongues, dictionairies of several languages are introduced throughout Appalachia. Some people find these words to be charming and unique in their own respect, and employ them in speech. Notably:
thippy = river, creek <Shawnee thepi
tammy = corn <Shawnee tamie
tutu = frog <Shawnee tutu
awhee = deer <Cherokee ahwi
utzee = mother, aunt <Cherokee utsi
tecka = friend <Tutelo texΔ
β (2050) Due to the merging of /Ιͺ~Ι/ into /Ιͺ/ before /n/ and /m/, /a:/ raises to /Γ¦:/ and /Γ¦/ raises to /Ι/ all before /n/ and /m/. This sound change is later generalized to occur everywhere. /a:/ is parallel to /aΙͺ/ in Standard English in 2021.
β (2075) βainβt you?β interpreted as yes/no question marker βaincha?β
aincha you seen βim tutus?
Did you see those frogs?
β (2090) Accusative Endings created, -im added onto masculine nouns, -er onto feminine ones, -it onto neuter nouns. βImβ becomes adopted as common-gender pronoun, βit/hitβ as neuter.
β (2120) Clusters simplify, nkt, mpt > nt; Εgd mbd > nd
β (2125) Verb may be placed initially, creating a VSO optional word order. This arrived out of analogy with βit/hitβ being dropped occasionally, as in βSeems to me that the man ainβt got much.β Some words reinterpretted through this:
to seem > to think
to please > to like
β Example sentences at this point:
plees Γ¦ them teckimas of yourn
βI like those friends of yours.β
drunt Γ¦ som wordrit
βI drank some water.β
β In 2145, there were increasing numbers of fascist groups in America that believed the βAmericanβ culture was the best one, that is, the mainstream middle class culture shown often on tv. This resulted in the prosecution of several cultural groups, include Afric
... keep reading on reddit β‘I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The nurse asked the rabbit, βwhat is your blood type?β
βI am probably a type Oβ said the rabbit.
The doctor says it terminal.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.
Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
They were cooked in Greece.
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
I don't mean one language replacing another (e.g. Anglo-Saxon replacing Old Brittonic), I mean a new language adopting grammar and vocabulary from its two predecessors in roughly equal measure.

Gender is fluid.
Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"
Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"
Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

As the title suggests, Iβm looking for my next book to read. Iβve been on a detective noir kick recently with The Yiddish Policemanβs Union and Fatherland which I liked very much, but I also like a lot of other βdarkβ books such as The Painted Bird and Blood Meridian.
Ive read a lot of cyberpunk which got me into the scifi genre. Books like Necromancer and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Iβm lacking a lot with philosophy books, mostly because the require a lot of deep reading that I WISH I had time for. In college I read a lot of excerpts from philosophy books and really enjoyed them, but each time I pick one up I feel overwhelmed and out of my league.
Any title from these genreβs will do, so let it rip!

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
