Title. The OTC formula usually contains 6% benzoic acid and 3% salicylic acid, but I've also seen some formulated as double strength, with twice the percentage of the actives.
So I occasionally get Athlete's Foot, maybe about once a year. Usually one of the OTC azole type creams resolves it in a week or less. This time around though it hasn't put a dent into it.
I was about ready to book an appointment with my doctor and get something stronger (and be out of pocket probably about $100+ too) when a friend recommended I try two ointments.
He said put on Blue Star Ointment first and really rub it in vigorously. Let it sit for about five minutes and then follow up with an ointment with 10% camphor (usually marketed as a pain relief ointment). I had both in my preps (for separate reasons) so figured why not. Repeat 2-3 times a day. (Apparently this was something he picked up while overseas in India where fungal infections and camphor are more common).
The Blue Star Ointment has an active ingredient of camphor but only about 1.3%. However, I think the magic in it though is more in the inactive ingredients (which the FDA does not require listing separately) benzoic acid and salicylic acid that mimic a similar ointment found over in Europe called Whitfield's Ointment. I put the one on first and it burned, not bad, but definitely uncomfortable, for about five minutes. After that I rubbed in a small amount of the pain relief ointment with 10% camphor.
The area became bright red, which is normal when you apply camphor as it increases blood flow and it burned for about 30 minutes, but that feeling gradually faded away. About 12 hours later I could see the fungal infection starting to subside. I repeated every 12 hours and the burning became incrementally less with each application. On day 3 now it has largely resolved, but I will continue treatment for at least another 4 days to make sure the fungus is completely dead.
Wanted to pass this along for anyone who might like the information.
EDIT: I do not know if using one or the other ointment separately will work. He said make sure to combine them both which is what I did. Online you can see reviews where people swear that Blue Star Ointment will heal fungal infections. Maybe next time I will try just one and see what happens. But, both definitely worked at least for me in this particular instance.
