In my humble opinion Patti Smith is the greatest singer-songwriter to come out of the entire punk genre (yes, even more so than Iggy Pop and Jello Biafra). Yes, as many have pointed out, she started out as a poet and that can be easily seen in her beautiful, abstract lyrics that are heavily reminiscent of Rimbaud, Ginsberg, Burroughs, etc., but the woman can belt a song with just as much wild intensity as Jim Morrison or Mick Jagger.
Her first three albums are all great classics. Horses is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest debuts ever, for me personally Radio Ethiopia is nearly as good and Easter, though definitely with a lighter direction, is still a very solid and entertaining rock record.
I feel as do a lot of her post-hiatus work has been sadly overlooked by some people, and although it definitely doesn’t reach the amazing heights of her early work, she still released a good number of decent albums like Peace and Noise, Gone Again, Banga and Wave. Yes, it’s a shame that she hasn’t managed to be as consistently great as say Nick Cave or Fiona Apple, but she has still left a tremendous body of work.
If it wasn’t for her so many great artists REM, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Talking Heads, Madonna, Hole, Bikini Kill, the Smiths and Sonic Youth to name but a few would be very different.
