Announcing Symphonia v0.4: +1 Vorbis support

Hey all,

I'm happy to announce the release of Symphonia v0.4! 🎉

Symphonia is pure Rust media format demuxing, tag reading, and audio decoding library with support for many popular formats and codecs.

Thanks to the excitement generated by the v0.3 announcement, I got many contributions this past cycle. Thanks to those contributions, I could spend much more time focusing on features and core improvements, and so, this release packs a lot of good stuff. Shout out to: BlackHoleFox, Herohtar, thomcc, and 5225225.

In addition to the usual bug fixes, the highlights for this release are:

Features:

  • Vorbis support!
  • A rewritten OGG demuxer that supports all the bells and whistles (turns out this is very painful).
  • Support for MP3 XING and LAME tags for gapless playback information.
  • Support for ID3v2 picture frames for covert art in MP3s.

Improvements:

  • Now ✨ 100% ✨ safe!
  • Complete rewrite of bit IO for more performance (measured up-to a 40% improvement on non-trivial IO-bound codecs like FLAC).
  • Many API improvements.
  • Now testing on big-endian platforms.

If you want to get your hands dirty, please check out the new basic usage example. For a more complete example, or, if you just want to listen to some music, please check out symphonia-play for a simple music player app. If you just like the project, consider giving it a star.

As usual, I'll be checking on the comments as time permits today to answer any questions or comments.

Enjoy!

EDIT: Added links to each of the contributors.

Ogg Vorbis: How to check for accidental ID3 tags and other questions

Background:

Group of best friends who've known each other for years, two leave for a year to travel by motorbike. Friend asked me how he should listen to music if there's uncertainty about an internet connection.

I secretly gathered up all available music files (most transitioned to streaming) and went about to sort and tag them using MusicBrainz Picard.

I then loaded the whole ~100000 songs into MediaMonkey to get rid of duplicates and recoded everything into ogg vorbis (high compatibility, open source, good compression, better than MP3) and ended up with about ~82000 songs(~480GB).

Issue/Questions:

I'm running Win11 and installed the "Web Media Extensions" from the Windows store. Explorer doesn't display any information in the music specific columns when viewing the files. Groove Music plays the files but crashes within 2min with error "Can't play [...] 0xc00db3b0". VLC and MediaMonkey play the files fine.

I am now wondering whether this could be because I ended up with ID3 tags in the ogg Vorbis files. How can I check whether an ogg Vorbis file contains ID3 tags?

Does MusicBrainz Picard write ID3 tags to files when Tags > Write tags to files is ticked? There is no ogg Vorbis specific settings under the "Tags" header in options.

Does MusicBrainz Picard remove ID3 tags from ogg Vorbis files if I check "clear existing tags"?

Why doesn't Spotify use Opus instead of Vorbis? Do they actually use AAC?

Since both Vorbis and Opus were created by Xiph and Opus beating Vorbis in everything, why doesn't Spotify upgrade from Vorbis to Opus?

And first of all, does Spotify use Vorbis anymore? Searching for Spotify audio quality, I've come across their official site and noticed they say they're streaming 128kbps AAC for free accounts and 320kbps AAC for paid subscriptions.

If they indeed stream AAC now, then why didn't they use Opus instead of Vorbis until they've changed to AAC? I mean, Opus isn't very new, Wiki says the initial release was in 2012.

Need help figuring out vorbis vs opus delay

I've been trying to figure out the advantages and disadvantages of using vorbis or opus for video game audio but I'm getting stuck on figuring out which one has a higher delay. According to some sources I've read opus should be the one with a higher delay (in my case that'd mean the delay between the sound being triggered and it being played) - https://www.reddit.com/r/GameAudio/comments/46y89f/comment/d0bv5sn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3, an account by someone who has tried it themselves and my other source is someone who is deep in the video game music preservation scene.

But at the same time opus seems to be advertised as a low delay codec (see this picture on their site: https://images-ext-2.discordapp.net/external/NNHJvJoOtKe6KZn3nZYq2q9cf3k2-Xc63lXSXZmz3PA/https/media.discordapp.net/attachments/332546149837832203/880430471098535936/Unbekannt.png).

I'm very likely just misinterpreting the picture, so I was hoping that you could help me figure out where this discrepancy is coming from, I would really appreciate it!

While I'm at it, I might as well look for confirmation on my opus vs vorbis assumptions so far:
From what I've gathered opus is more CPU intensive that vorbis (unless it's something like WEM Opus that can make use of hardware acceleration), but has a smaller quality drop off at lower qualities and has a higher compression rate. So in the end opus might be better to use for simpler, CPU unintensive games, which is what I'm looking into at the moment. If Opus does indeed have a higher delay, then it might not be suitable for SFX unless it can be decompressed and loaded into memory in advance before the sound needs to be triggered.
But let me know if my assumptions aren't correct!

I might want to post this into gameaudio as well, but I felt like audioengineering might be a safer choice for such a technical question.

Opus vs vorbis for music collection

For my entire life, I've been encoding my music collection as 320kbps mp3 files. I'm looking for a free lossy alternative and can't choose between opus and vorbis. They seem to have nearly the exact same filesize when encoded at the same bitrates. Will they be of equivalent quality when encoded at the same bitrate, or will one be superior? Is one preferable to the other for high quality music files?

Also, would it be reasonable to convert my entire collection into one of these formats to save on disk space?

Thanks!

Vorbis vs. Opus for engine that decodes audio on the fly

I've been looking into the disadvantages and advantages of using vorbis and opus for the game engine RenPy recently. It seems that the advantages of Opus are that the files are smaller and seem to preserve quality better on lower settings. On the other hand opus is more CPU intensive, which might lead to problems with more complex dynamic audio or SFX. Vorbis would be the less CPU intensive option and uncompressed files like PCM files would be the least CPU intensive, which would in turn take up more disk and memory space, though. I hope I'm right so far, please let me know if I've overlooked anything!

One thing I'm confused about specifically is delay. One thing to note is that RenPy doesn't support preloading audio files. They're decoded/loaded into memory on the fly.
The delay order from most to least should be opus, vorbis and then PCM. Though apparently opus can, with the right settings have a really small delay compared to vorbis. And then there was someone over at r/audioengineering who said that delay isn't a factor at all when I asked a similar question (as you can see in my reply, other sources I know said the opposite, adding to my confusion):
https://www.reddit.com/r/audioengineering/comments/qpzhf0/need_help_figuring_out_vorbis_vs_opus_delay/

Adding to said confusion was this graph from the opus site that showed that opus has a pretty small delay comparatively while people reported that opus has a longer delay than vorbis when used in engine. So yeah, I'm pretty lost at this point and was hoping that someone could help clarify this for me

How do you store Date tags in FLAC/Vorbis comment?

Hello, I realized that when I use MusicBrainz Picard the date of the remastered album is put in the DATE field, rather than the original date.

I want to insert the original date in the DATE field, but then I don't know which field I should put the date of the remastered album in.

The RELEASEDATE (aka. TDRL in id3v2) doesn't seem to be the proper one.

TDRL
The 'Release time' contains a timestamp describing when the
audio was first released. Timestamp format is described in
the ID3v2 structure document [ID3v2-strct].

[R] Large quantities of Vorbis (.ogg) audio

I'm working on a secure decoder for OGG Vorbis and it's at a point where it plays everything I've thrown at it, but I want to ensure compatibility with a wide range of real-world files.

So now I am looking for real-world OGG Vorbis files (.ogg extension). As much as you can reasonably share, up to 700Gb. I don't care what's in them, just the format. The more diverse, the better (scraped from the web is more interesting than a large FLAC collection transcoded to Vorbis).

I've poked around on archive.org, but couldn't find many files in one place. The only promising lead is LibriVox, but those particular torrents fail to download for some reason.

For some reason ffmpeg forces Vorbis

For some reason whenever I run a file through ffmpeg it transcodes any audio codecs into vorbis format. The command:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv output.mkv -c copy

produces a file, output.mkv with the original video codec but the audio codec gets transcoded into vorbis. It does this to pretty much anything I throw at it, MP3, AAC, EAC, FLAC.

Even if I try to force the codec with

ffmpeg -i input.mkv output.mkv -c:v copy -c:a flac

It still gives me vorbis.

Can anyone here please help me fix this very strange issue?

P.S. For reference, I'm running this on Linux with ffmpeg installed through the Debian repository, but I can replicate the same behavior on windows, that probably means this is not a bug.

Maximum bitrate of ogg/vorbis

Hello!

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but I've seen ogg/vorbis bitrates in excess of 128 kbps mentioned in several places (supposedly Spotify can stream vorbis at a maximum of 320 kbps), while the xiph.org foundation states that the maximum bitrate per channel is 128 kbps. Assuming that for typical stereo audio this comes to 256 kbps, what is the meaningful comparison with something like e.g. mp3 at 320 kbps? Isn't the bitrate usually mentioned that of a single channel? In that case, what's the meaning of 320 kbps stereo vorbis audio or have I just come across false information?
