Vladimir Solovyov

I am currently reading the works of a philosopher of the Russian religious renaissance of the 19th and 20th centuries. I'm sure a lot of you have heard of Vladimir Solovyov, who was a kind of crypto-Catholic and wanted the end of the schism between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. He also wrote about mysticism and sophiology, the dangers of modernism, materialism and rationalism and was Dostoyevsky's inspiration for Alyosha in the Brothers Karamazov. At the center of his philosophy is the relationship between man (both as an individual and as a collective) and God and the all-unity. According to Solovyov, this all-unity encompassing the cosmos is based on creation. Despite the fall of man, it is preserved in divine wisdom and effective in individual and social life. The goal of the development of the world is the regaining of the all-unity with the Creator. Solovyov's philosophy of history is determined by the model of a β€œfree theocracy”, which is realized in that humanity subordinates itself to the divine will, guided by the church. In the Catholic Church, Solovyov saw the moral force that defended Christian principles more clearly than Orthodoxy and Protestantism.

Russian Cosmist: Vladimir Sergeevich Solovyov, The OG Contactee?

I found a neat gem from some reading up on the so called Russain Cosmists. Russian Cosmism definition from Wikipedia:

Cosmism entailed a broad theory of natural philosophy, combining elements of religion and ethics with a history and philosophy of the origin, evolution, and future existence of the cosmos and humankind. Many ideas of the Russian cosmists were later developed by those in the transhumanist movement.

I was perusing George M. Youngs The Russian Cosmists due to the historical significance of the work. It certainly relates to what would eventually become a modern day Sci-fi and Ufological mythology tradition. Many ideas and concepts from Russian Cosmism are the backbone of the "core story" of the NASA startup days and the Russian space programs as well. Dr. Diana Pasulka would have a lot to say on this subject. Can we now officially call ufology a tradition? I mean the history of contact with non human intelligence's is just rife with unimaginable complexity, periodicity and variability. Hence all the worlds endless mythology's, religions, origin story's, tall tales, real tales with tails sometimes, asshole lizard folk etc...

An OG Contactee......... Solovyov?

Here is a cool poem by philosopher Vladimir Solovyov with backstory excerpt from Young's book with a contactee style vision, an esoteric goose chase and then culminating with a meeting of 'Sophia' the Gnostic goddess in an Egyptian desert followed by the consummate transformation of the poet-philospher for the rest of his life:

From The Russian Cosmist's by George M. Young:

Solovyov vividly describes a mystical experience that he considered a major event in his life. He was fascinated by the idea of the EnSoph, the Infinite One of Kabbalistic literature. According to a Russian friend of his in London, L. I. Yanzhul, Solovyov would sit for hours in the reading room, staring at one page. As Solovyov himself explains in his poem, he was meditating on the name and presence of Divine Sophia.

In the reading room, I was alone most often And whether you believe or not-God sees Powers hidd

   Vladimir Solovyov
   Lies in this sepulcher.
   Once a philosopher
   And now a skeleton.
   To some he was kind,
   To many an enemy;
   But, having loved madly,
   He plunged into a ravine
   And lost his mortal soul,
   Not to mention body:
   The devil ransomed it,
   The dogs ransacked him.
Passerby! Learn from this example,
How malignant love and beneficial faith.

My name is Dan Everett and I am a linguist, anthropologist, philosopher, and author of Don’t Sleep There Are Snakes and a dozen other books and I have a 15-year disagreement with Noam Chomsky. I am Professor of Cognitive Sciences at Bentley University. Ask me Anything!

Edit: I'm signing off now. Thanks to everyone for all your questions and kind words. I hope to do another AMA soon! If you want to learn more about language, linguistics, cognition, and culture, check out my podcast series: The Story of Language podcast with Dan Everett

Proof here: https://twitter.com/canguroenglish/status/1392156667471704066

Some of the things that you might want to ask me about are:

The four decades I have spent working on about 20 Amazonian languages, including living over 7 years in villages of the PirahΓ£ people, along the Maici River in the Amazon jungle.

Jungle experiences, including attacks by large anacondas, Amazonian giant centipedes, Wandering spiders, jaguars, pumas, and so on. I also have had all three types of malaria of the Amazon multiple times, including once when I had malaria, vivax, and falciparum simultaneously.

I began my career in the Amazon as an evangelical protestant missionary but became an atheist, which caused severe problems in my family, and led to loss of employment as a missionary (who needs an atheist missionary?)

I have a 15-year running debate with Chomsky in which he (and others) have called me a charlatan, though many other linguists, anthropologists, and cognitive scientists agree with me. If I am right - I am - Chomsky’s principal theoretical works - that language is innate and that all human languages have recursive sentences, are wrong.

In my book Dark Matter of the Mind: The Culturally Articulated Unconscious, I created a β€œranked-value” theory of culture and how culture and language build each other, a cognitive symbiosis.

My most recent book, How Language Began, argues that language is a human invention, that it is over 1.5, probably 2, million years ago. I have followed up on this with an archaeologist co-author, Dr. Larry Barham, in which we use data from tool construction and treatment to argue that Homo erectus had language. More and more data from many other scientists shows that language is far older than our species.

The goal of the development of the world is the regaining of the all-unity with the Creator.
