Since the Treaty of Rome, the depositary for European Treaties seems to always be the Government of Italy. Why is this?
Treaties always have a "depository state" (i.e. the state in whose care the original copy of a treaty is entrusted). For whatever reason, since the signing of the Treaty of Rome, all European treaties (Brussels, Maastricht, Dublin, Lisbon etc.) have been entrusted to the Italian Government. I'd be curious to learn how this came about.
