All because Nintendo took away the ability to jump.
Leave it to Nintendo to realize that by removing one of the most basic core mechanics in gaming they could somehow turn the entire concept of a 3D Platformer on its head and give us something absolutely new and fresh.
Captain Toad just truly feels like Nintendo at its creative best, making something that feels somehow very familiar and very new at the same time.

I loved Odyssey and 3D Land as well as Splatoon and DK Tropical Freeze.
But for my money Captain Toad is hands down the most creative and interesting new game Nintendo has made in a long time.
Jumping is something we just 100% take for granted in gaming. If your character moves...they jump. From the original Mario Bros up through Odyssey jumping has been as common as moving left and right.
When Nintendo created Captain Toad levels for 3D Land what did they do? They took away our ability to jump. Then they made an entire 3D platforming game around this entire limitation...and it felt amazing.
Captain Toad both feels like an extension of the Mario franchise and an entirely new genre of Platformer at the same time. 3D navigation, path finding, avoiding enemies, collecting items...all here!
But not being able to jump changes the entire game and I say for the better
