A list of puns related to "The Man (Taylor Swift song)"
Ok, I love Taylor but some songs just confuse the hell out of me. I feel so dumb lol.
willow: what is happening? it seems like sheβll just follow the dude wherever and whatever he does. like sheβs so smitten but she follow him wherever. βthe more you say the less i know.β what does that mean? like the more he talks the less sheβs sure of whatβs gonna happen next? but sheβs cool with it cause itβs her man right?
also every bait and switch was a work of art? i really really really donβt get it.
also, thatβs when? whatβs happening? like you can come back when you think of me? UGH.
whatβs your song or line you donβt get? and if you get it, please help people like me? haha thank you!!
OK so yes I understand that some men are evil and will throw anyone under the bus to get what they want but so will some women. And in some area men will excel in some area then woman and vice versa.
But all this hate about omg man have it better and men are trash. Is so toxic for everyone. Some girl grow up with that in mind and some women are completely overwhelmed with these comments. So they say to themselves maybe they are true.
But the thing is woman start to look for them in men. And if you look for something you'll find it. Like men treat woman like the gum on their shoe. Well if you go looking for men to treat you poorly you'll find it. And when you do you'll say omg men do treat women like trash.
But in actually fact that man could have failed an exam. Found out that his mom has cancer.
Now to have the belief that 3.3b men are just like 5 dudes you know is not a good idea.
If you go looking for negatively in people you will 100% find them.
there are so many for me. donβt get me wrong the cruel summer bridge hits every single time, but i wish i could erase my memory of it and hear it for the first time again. same for the outros of the other side of the door and cardigan. what are your picks?
For me, itβs Ours. I canβt listen to that song without thinking about how itβs the perspective of a teenage girl being taken advantage of by an adult man, and it breaks my heart every time.
Iβll go first, βthe 1β
I'll start by saying I have a verbal offer from another industry and I'm just waiting to sign the letter. But I've spent almost two years in the HVAC industry, two different firms, and I'm incredibly frustrated and heartbroken. I love my job. I love coordinating with contractors, writing reports, and training my coworkers. (Yes, I know I'm too new to be training but we're super understaffed.)
It makes me want to cry. My supervisors are incredibly condescending. I just went to a performance review where they were an hour late to the meeting, criticized and nitpicked everything I said, and questioned whether I could do my job. At one point, the head boss congratulated my direct supervisor on his "passionate plea," as he pointedly told me. After that, my supervisor sent me an email misrepresenting my performance, with some outright lies. I sent back my response, nothing inflammatory, just "I'm shocked and disappointed that this is the impression of me," and pointing out things I did well, where I could improve, and things that they really screwed up. For example, my mentor left the company a few months ago, and they immediately gave me a huge chunk of his projects. I'm way out of my depth here.
But I'm so sad. I can't help but wonder if they would treat a man like this. They just hired someone for my department. He has extensive field experience but none in my specific job. They made him "Senior "My Job Title'". He doesn't know how to do the basic parts of my job!! I'm not denigrating his experience, but why couldn't he have been "Senior Field Specialist" and I "Senior My Job"? I realize I only have one year of experience for this job in particular but I'm literally the only one in my department. My last job, the boss's male intern got so much special attention, and I got fired during a global pandemic.
Anyway, I'm really sad. I enjoy my job but feel that I wasn't given the chance to succeed. This new industry is basically a dream job for me, but I'm still frustrated that I wasn't given the tools to succeed at something I genuinely enjoy.
The main one Iβve noticed is the sirens from βNo Body No Crimeβ and every time I hear one when driving, I will always sing aloud βHe did itβ.
However, the one that destroys me is from βLast Kissβ where her voice quivers in the bridge and it seems as though sheβs about to cry.
βI hope the Sun shines and itβs a beautiful dayβ voice quiver and something reminds you, you wish you had stayedβ
It hurts me just as much each time I listen. I hope she keeps this in Taylorβs Version.
For songs about other people/relationships, my brain default goes to imaging the song about a romantic relationship. But after this quote from Daisy Jones & The Six (book by Taylor Jenkins Reid)...
>βBut that's because it's easy to disguise almost anything as a love song."
...it made me think about how a lot Taylor's notorious songs supposedly about romantic love could be a mask for alternative messages.
I like to think of Cold As You in the POV of a parent-child relationship - a kid living with their parents who came out to them but was not accepted.
>So I start a fight 'cause I need to feel somethin'
>
>And you do what you want 'cause I'm not what you wanted
What Taylor Swift songs about love/relationships do you see in the perspective of a non-romantic relationship?
I really liked the lower voice register in "Exile" by Taylor Swift. Do you guys have any other low sections that you really like? It felt satisfying for some reason when I hear her lower voice in "Exile".
I think folklore/evermore have the most examples of this. What about you? Any low sections you really like?
The first song of Taylor Swift that I've ever listened to must probably be Look what you made me do. Since there was so many amv's with that it was hard not to come around it. I probably heard Shake it off a little earlier but I never really listened to it so I don't count it.
[Verse 1]
I would be quick and I would be tall
They'd say Iβm bulking when i eat and Iβll get stronger than you all
And that would be okay for me to do
Every pound that I had gained would make me more attractive to you
[Pre-Chorus]
And my metabolism
Would match my appetite
Not fasting for your dinner
What's that like?
[Chorus]
Iβm so sick of cutting as much as I can
Knowing that I'd lose fat quicker if I was a man
And I'm so sick of weight coming on me again
'Cause if I was a man, I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
[Verse 2]
Youβd see my muscle, When i put in work
It wouldnβt hide under my fat and shortness I never asked for
My favorite ice cream, would go to use
I already work out daily, why wonβt it just fuel my power moves?
[Pre-Chorus]
And I could toast when my friends did something great!
Later I wouldnβt need to go compensate
[Chorus]
Iβm so sick of cutting as much as I can
Knowing that I'd lose fat quicker if I was a man
And I'm so sick of weight coming on me again
'Cause if I was a man, I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
[Chorus]
Iβm so sick of cutting as much as I can
Knowing that I'd lose fat quicker if I was a man
And I'm so sick of weight coming on me again
'Cause if I was a man, I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
[Bridge]
And youβre always bragging bout 3,000 TDEE from being swole and like 6β3
When you bring snacks home from work
You just pound em like a jerk
your poor girl has 1,200 TDEE and sheβs like barely 5β3
And you just arenβt aware
Of how this just isnβt fair
[Chorus]
Iβm so sick of cutting as much as I can
Knowing that I'd lose fat quicker if I was a man
And I'm so sick of weight coming on me again
'Cause if I was a man, I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
I'd be a fit man
itβs a yes for me, the song was βitβs time to goβ
i was apart of this organization(cyber security) at school that was male dominated, there was only 3 gals including myself and two of them had left a year after we all started just because they were graduating,so i was the only girl there for a while. i was closing in on my last year and i was just getting really sick of how i was being treated since i started, but i wanted to stick it out to prove to them that no matter how much they belittle me, iβll persist. but it got to the point where i would cry and my self esteem was just down the drain. and there was a new girl joining and i didnβt want her to think i was weak so i stayed in the organization for a little longer, and then evermore came out and i heard βitβs time to goβ and i was like dang sheβs right.
so i left the organization because i rather set an example for the new girl that you have to respect yourself and you canβt let people treat you like that. a week later she left and we started our own all girls cyber security club :).
anyways i would like to hear anyone elseβs stories of how a swift song impacted them, i just think itβs super interesting!
A lot of people thing the βf*ck the patriarchyβ lyric is so out of place and they wish it had been replaced in the song. Personally I think it makes the song just that much better but whatβs a lyric you with you could erase from existence?
I've been interested in film references in Taylor Swift. I know that "If This Was A Movie" refers to Hollywood and movie formats and that "White Horse" refers to Hollywood. I also know about "Safe and Sound" being for The Hunger Games, Beautiful Ghosts for Cats, and I Don't Wanna Be Forever for Fifty Shades Darker.
IIRC The Man music video has traces of "The Wolf of Wall Street" and Leonardo DiCaprio (besides the Leonardo DiCaprio mention).
I've been hearing that Look What You Made Me Do rhythm is very similar to the rhythm in the Halloween song in Mean Girls, but I would like further explanation.
"Mean" music video has a scene with a "Snidely Whiplash-esque character" referring to old western films. The scene of guy tying person to railroad tracks was common back then.
ME! probably has references I don't know...
(Side note: It would be awesome to have a "My Tears Ricochet" music video based on Macbeth--who betrayed Banquo, but Banquo's ghost haunts Macbeth like the main character in "My Tears Ricochet")
Any other important film references in Taylor Swift songs or music videos?
everyone knows that taylor usually writes from real life experiences. i would say that reputation is her most personal album but i wanted to hear what other people thought
Hello Taylor Swift fans,
I'm a 9th grade English teacher, and I'm planning a lesson for which I would like to include some Taylor Swift lyrics, as I know she is quite popular with some of my students. I'm out of my depth here, though, so after a bit of fruitless Googling I decided to ask here.
Can you suggest a song that would be interesting and (importantly) school appropriate? It would be great if it included examples of figurative language (similes, metaphors, etc.) and/or themes of self-expression or reflection. Neither is a necessity however. I'm sure Taylor has songs that would fit great, but I haven't had luck finding the perfect one so far.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Edit: Wow, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the response. Thanks to everyone who offered a suggestion! It's wonderful seeing how passionate many of you are, offering up entire essays on the themes and language techniques seen in certain songs. I have a couple of frontrunners but I'll try to take some time to go through everyone's suggestion. Much appreciated!
It was produced by Joel Little so it makes sense but it reminds me of βPlease Donβt Call Meβ The Man
So I love all those "explain a movie plot badly" posts (like these), I think they're so funny and creative and I thought it might be fun if we do something similar for Taylor's songs too!
I've been listening to Taylor for a while, but I only recently started listening to Speak Now, and I've had Mine on repeat all day. It's by far my favourite song on Speak Now, it's so cute it makes me want to cry lol. I'm fully aware that I'll probably get sick of it after another few days of this, but right now it's like I can't stop listening to it.
When Lover first came out, I was like this with I Think He Knows too, so that one as well.
What songs did you have on repeat the first time you heard it/it came out?
The first fall of snow has already begun in my part of England and I immediately started playing the song Evermore ft Bon Iver, Tis The Damn Season, New Years Day and Back to December on rotation. With Autumn officially ending with the soon to be December, I was wondering which songs/albums you play of Taylor's during Winter?
Example: i always thought that the last great american dynasty would have been better if it went like this
"Holiday house sat quietly on that beach Free of women with madness, their men and bad habits Until it was bought by me"
I like it because it is such a good way to build her character in the story of the house. Also, it perfectly flows into Mad Women
Ps- English is my third language and this is the first time i posting anything on reddit, so i am sorry in advance π
I've been a TS fan since Speak Now era and I have never skipped one until I heard "closure" from the evermore album. Idk why but the static-ish intro just doesn't sit well with my ears. I like the lyrics, i just really don't like the clanging noises lol
Out of all of Taylorβs incredible discography of love songs, I feel like there is one for almost every couple that conveys the love they have for one another. Which one would you choose?
For me βLoverβ is the downright obvious song and Iβm determined to make that my wedding song even though Iβm not getting married much less even in a relationship haha. I also think βLove Storyβ and βEnchantedβ are perfect to have your Wedding dance too.
Whatβs your preferred Taylor Swift wedding song and if youβre in a relationship does your partner approve?
Surely Iβm not the only one who loves these, so I would love to know which ones are your favourite!
Mine would be a close tie between
β Haha, I canβt even say it with a straight faceβ - This is Why We Canβt Have Nice Things
β So he calls me up and heβs like βI still love you,β and Iβm like, Iβm just, this is exhausting, you know, like we are never getting back together...like ever.β -WANEGBT
βNow go sit in the corner and think about what you didβ Better than Revenge
And of course the most iconic one of all.... βIβm sorry, the old Taylor canβt come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, cause sheβs dead.β - LWYMMD
I was trying to come up with my favorite TS song a few days ago, and I realized the number of songs tied for 1st place for me is kind of ridiculous. Somewhere around 15-20 (I lost count at some point).
So what's your deal: one absolute favorite? A few contenders? Too many to choose from?
And how flexible are your favorites? Do they change a lot, or are they super consistent?
EDIT: I challenged myself to narrow it down and went from a list of 21 possible favorites to 8 strong contenders to a final group of 4 that I can't choose from. The top 4 for me are "the 1," "illicit affairs," "tolerate it," and "cowboy like me."
She has such an interesting catalogue of sad or bittersweet songs about so many different topics. What songs would choose to best represent this side of her song writing?
Any Taylor Swift songs from earlier Taylor Swift albums that could be in the same universe (Debut to 1989). We know about connected songs in Folklore and Evermore, but I'm more interested in connected songs in earlier albums.
I'm thinking that the Better Than Revenge female lead could be interrupting the wedding in Speak Now? Both of these characters have issues with the male lead's choice of love interest, with similar issues and a desire to rectify it.
We know about "It's supposed to be fun, turning 21" in All Too Well 10 Minute Version is an allusion to "The Moment I Knew" when he didn't show up for her birthday.
Any other connected songs or hypothesized connected songs?
Taylor Swift is super famous for writing biographical songs that most of the times reflect her relationships or breakups. But I wonder what are all the songs she wrote for other characters - fictional or real life ones - before she wrote Folklore and Evermore that specialized her non-biographical songwriting? I know Ronan and Starlight from her album Red as well as Death By A Thousand Cuts from Lover. Are there any others too?
Hello all! I make ambient and meditation music, and I was really taken with the gorgeous vocal layering at the end of the 10 min version of All Too Well, and wondered how it would sound as a piece of ambient music. So I tried it and then I got the idea to try a few more...
Here's Enchanted - an ep featuring ambient instrumental versions of Taylor's songs, hope you enjoy.. available on all streaming platforms (yes, these are officially licensed!)
