I've been going through top-10 of the Billboard Hot 100 from it's inception in August 4, 1958 till now over the past several months, listening to all the songs that charted in the Top 10 from the late-1950s to the early-2020s. It's been rather educational and informative to see the change in music from the rock n' roll and doo-wop of the late-50s to current trap/pop of today. I've also discovered so many gems that I did not know about from all the decades. And I've also grown to appreciate songs that I once disliked. I'd say personal ranking in terms of Top 10 singles for each full decade it would be: 80s>60s>90s>70s>2010s>2000s. Best year would be 1983 and worst year 1990. Albums post-1955 it would be 70s>60s>90s>2010s>80s>2000s.
But on this journey, I've listened to a lot of songs that are not so great. There are a lot of very mediocre songs to have charted in the Top 10. Thankfully, more of these songs were just boring than outright terrible. Key word is most. There are still quite a few duds in every year.
But there is one song that rose above the rest in terms of pure awfulness. And that is "Mr. Custer" by Larry Verne. Not only did this song chart in the Top-10 of 1960, it was a No. 1 song. For one week. I don't know how. If you listen to it, you'll understand my disdain for this song. It's a novelty march song. I don't mind a good novelty song, but it has to be good. This is not. I couldn't believe that this was a No. 1 hit. I was in denial for several hours. Before that, I thought "Venus" by Frankie Avalon was the worst No. 1 song I had heard. "Mr. Custer" makes "Venus" sound like "Bohemian Rhapsody". After accepting it, "Mr. Custer" became the litmus test I used to judge especially bad songs against.
It's especially noteworthy because if you look at the 1960 Hot 100 No. 1s, it is sandwiched between "My Heart Has a Mind of It's Own" by Connie Francis (a great song) and "Save the Last Dance for Me" by the Drifters (a damn perfect masterpiece). Amidst all this great doo-wop and rock n' roll and country, you have this...song.
Is there a worst No. 1 song than this? I'll take any No. 1 song in the 2010s over this. Hell, even in the same year, "Running Bear" by Johnny Preston was a No. 1 song, and that song is horrendous too. And in 1959, the No. 1 song for the entire year was "The Battle of New Orleans" by Johnny Horton, a song that is the antithesis of rock n' roll.
Besides #2, #11 is probably the most cursed position a song can peak at. Hit songs like You Spin Me Round (Like A Record by Dead Or Alive and Stronger by Britney Spears barely missed the top 10, but remain enduring pop classics! What are some of your favorite songs that also peaked at #11?
