at the time wasn’t he one of the best coaches in the world? We made it to the quarterfinals of every major tournament we played and 2 out of those 3 tournaments we missed out due to a penalty shootout. So what the fuck happened?
Sven Göran Eriksson or "Sven" or even "Svennis" is somewhat of a controversial figure. Not just for his exploits with the ladies, but also in terms of his football legacy. In Italy he is viewed as the coach who won Lazio the clubs first Scudetto in the 1999/2000 season, along with 2 Coppa Italia, 2 Italian supercups, 1 Uefa Cup Winners Cup and 1 Uefa Super cup. Along with another 2 Coppa Italia triumphs in charge of their cross town rivals Roma and Sampdoria respectively.
He also enjoyed relative success during his two spells with the Portuguese giants Benfica, where he won 3 league titles and finished as runners up in both the Uefa Cup and the Champions League(Or the European Cup as it was known at the time). It was in his native Sweden where his most significant achievement took place however, winning the 1981-82 Uefa Cup with IFK Göteborg, beating a Hamburg side in the final who would go on to win the European Cup the very next season. They are to date the only Swedish club to ever win a European competition, and in all likelihood it will never happen again
Still there is a sense that his reputation was marred by his time in charge of the English national team. He coached the team to 3 quarter finals at major tournaments, losing against eventual champions Brazil in 2002 after a classic Seaman blunder, and then twice on penalties against Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portugal in both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup. However, in spite of this the general consensus was that he had failed to deliver what the people wanted and expected from England's well renowned "Golden Generation".
Irrespective of what your opinion is on his performance in charge of the three lions, there is no doubt that he made a big impact on the players he coached. Many of whom went on to form successful coaching careers of their own.
Let us take a look at some of his best "pupils".
Diego Simeone: El Cholo was part of Lazio's scudetto winning team, and has named Eriksson as one of his most significant influences. "I have the influence of several coaches. Bielsa, (Sven-Göran) Eriksson, (Alfio) Basile. They have all left a mark on me" Regarding Eriksson specifically he has said: "I always admired his ability to be unfazed by almost anything, and he taught me a lot about how to approach games. I will always be grateful to him"
Roberto Mancini: Another successful coach and player who cites "Sven" as a major influence. He played under the Swede at both Sampdoria and Lazio, and had this
