Say you're the last guy to pick and no one else picks smokes, and you are not good at playing smokes for that map. Should you still pick an agent with smokes, or go with the agents you are more comfortable with?

The thermite reaction, Al2 + Fe203 -> 2 Fe + Al2O3, gives off plenty of sparks, a puddle of molten Fe, and a pile of ashy white Al203 as you might expect. But it also produces a good bit of white smoke. Is that vaporized Al203?
