A list of puns related to "Slovene Americans"
What I would find interesting is, were they known (and how where they presented) in the states at the time or was everything coupled together as a Yugoslav resistance? I remember there was some βcomicβ (or maybe it was an article) of some US soldier that operated with (or also with) the OF partisans, but I cannot recall neither the name of the soldier nor more specific details.
Have a nice day and thank you in advance for your answers.
Hey there. I'm interested in learning both Slovene and Russian, and figured a good way to help learn them would be through native speakers. I'd be glad to help you with English pronunciation, grammar and semantics in exchange.
A bit of background: I'm 16M and speak a Midwestern American English dialect. My timezone is EST. I play games (primarily RTS and Grand Strategy, but I also play other genres) and have a strong interest in History, Geography and Linguistics.
We can talk about other things as well, if you want; I tend to overthink things a lot, especially after the fact (which is one of the reasons that I'm very nervous as I post this) so if I'm being too apologetic that is probably why.
I'd prefer to do this exchange with Discord; I'm fine with either text chat or voice chat.
Fair warning, I am an absolute beginner with both of these languages; Feel free to correct me if I pronounce something wrong or if my sentences are ungrammatical, I really need it. I'm probably going to have to ask a lot of stupid questions. I'm sorry if this would be a problem.
It's completely fine with me if you're not particularly fluent with English; this is an exchange, after all.
I'm looking forwards to meeting you if you're interested!
Hey all,
I recently found a great item on Bolha, a history of the families of the town my grandparents are from (Sveti KriΕΎ pri Litiji) My Slovenian is unfortunately limited to a few prayers (sveti angel). Is Bolha an eBay type site like I assumed? I can't seem to figure out how to buy anything. Hvala lepe!
I'm a 4th generation Slovene; my great grandfather came to the states in the early 1900s. Well, I'd like to come back, I've read that someone in my position wouldn't need to get a visa to establish citizenship in Slovenia, is this correct? I still have living relatives in Slovenia as well if that matters or helps. I am calling the Slovenian Embassy tomorrow to see what information they can provide but if anyone from Slovenia is educated on this subject I'd appreciate any information....
Hello, all. I'm a mid-20s American whose grandfather (along with his sister and mother) immigrated to the U.S. (specifically, Cleveland) after WWII. I grew up around the Slovene neighborhood in Cleveland's east side as a kid and have a sense of the culture. I also took a brief trip to Ljubljana about 6 years ago, although I wish I had a chance to stay longer.
My specific question relates to why my family chose to move. I learned recently that my grandfather, his sister, and his mother were in a Nazi work camp in Austria during the war (estimated that my grandfather was there between the ages of 3 and 8). After the war, it was apparently clear to them that moving out of the country was their best option, so they headed to Cleveland (I understand why Cleveland--we have the only sizable Slovene diaspora community in the States). My grandfather was murdered before I was born and his mother was also dead, so this information trickled to me from other sources in my family, so I sadly can't directly ask anyone with firsthand knowledge about this time period.
Based on this information, is there anyway to know what type of political alliances my family held in Slovenia? Where they were likely located (I believe they lived in or near Ljubljana)? Any other information? Any idea on books I could read to learn more about this time period? If it is of any help, the family name is Peternelj (although I have my father's Hungarian last name) and they were Roman Catholic. I have no idea what happened to anyone else from the family during the war.
Thanks! Any information whatsoever is greatly appreciated.
How did the term "Windish" come about (I understand its German in origin but I guess what I'm asking is a little more specific). There is a group of Slovenes who immigrated to America that refer to themselves as Windish rather than Slovene.
As far as I can tell, no one else does this, so does anybody know why this group of Slovenes does this? If it helps, most of the Slovenes who refer to themselves as Windish are from the Murska Sobota area and immigrated to the Allentown-Bethlehem, Pennsylvania area.
Lmao! I heard about this before, but this is the first time that I read the article about it.
And, ofc, Americans never fail to amaze me!

TLDR: Read executive summary, it says "The Slavic community is defined as those from the former Soviet Union".
Good evening Slovenia!
You may remember me from posts such as: Favorite craft breweries? and We want to live in Slovenia.

A lot has happened and changed since these posts, especially since the "We want to live in Slovenia." post. What has not changed is the fact that we definitely want to live in Slovenia. If anything, now that we have spent a week in your country, we want to live there way, way more. It immediately felt like home to both of us and we'd really like to start a business and family there.

I've got a few questions for y'all about ways we could provide value as immigrants:

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

"Here is your ID Mr. von Graf, you are now registered as a citizen of the Stellar Assembly and resident of Hyrdanya." The clerk, a fleshy rounding looking Torvost who's appearance assaulted Rudolf's eyes like any of the more obese denizens of home, gave him a card detailing his basic information, like IDs on Earth. He wasn't used to being referred to without his rank, years in service made it normal to be called Sergeant, but he likely wasn't active duty anymore, despite still having his tags and unit ID.
"Good, thank you. Where is this Geldun woman that I am supposed to meet?" His first order of business upon landing was to get an ID, which he now had. Captain Stach had apparently called ahead of time and had everything arranged so he could walk in and fill out a form and do some measurements. Skipping lines in bureaucracy was always a very good gift to be given.
"Down the hall behind me and third door on the right."
Now he had the rest of the things to do. He had no place to stay, he had no job, he had no clothes, he owned nothing more than his combat gear. He got his rifle, sidearm, knife, and ammunition back after being a little forceful with words. Sometimes people needed to be reminded not to take a foreign military's property, such things are bad for one's health. He knew it was Stach who ultimately ordered them to give him his things back though, despite some administrator's complaining about owning such powerful weapons being illegal.
"Are you Bilzah? There is work to do." He stated dryly after walking into the tall woman's office.
She jumped slightly before quickly shuffling some thing around on her desk then pretending it didn't happen. "Uh yes, I am. I take it you are this Human? Rudolf?"
"That would be correct," he sat himself down in the chair in front of her desk, setting his helmet down in front of him.
"Oh, you poor thing. I wish we stop pirates easier, I'm glad you were freed though."
"I do not need your sympathy. I freed myself and my fellow captives and I killed the entire crew for their deeds. I did my duty as a Weltraummarine of my nation. Now, I believe living quarters is the most pressing matter. Shall we get that sorted?"
Bilzah turned her monitor towards him where they could both see it, "that is already arranged. Normally, someone would acquire a home on t

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

What's something the US has that you wish was more prominent / more popular in Slovenia? What's some aspect of the food in Slovenia that differs from the US? What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your country? How do people in Slovenia feel about the government there? What's something people miss when they leave Slovenia? What's a joke (I am very loose on what classifies as a joke) from Slovenia that isn't something you hear often elsewhere?

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
BamBOO!
Yugoslav annexation of areas of Italy caused a massive exodus to begin, as Italians began to fear both retaliation & repression under the new Yugoslav state; this would be the beginning of migratory patterns which would characterize the area for the next two decades, as some 250,000~ Italians relocated themselves. The relocated were bitterly disappointed upon arrival in Italy; where they had expected recompense from the state, they only found themselves neglected & impoverished. Furthermore, the local population was less than receptive of their coming, seeing them as usurping the few economic opportunities which remained in the immediate post-War. Ironically, some of the immigrants would even be relegated to reside in former concentration camps, many of which still stood dry & grimly as memoirs of a tyrannical past.
Internally, Italians were migrating as well. The boons of post-war economic growth meant that young Southern males saw increasingly opportunity in the Northβs growing industrial sector, dissipating traditional villages & amplifying the quick spread of metropolitan areas. Politically, many of these migrant workers shifted leftward as a result of their industrial circumstances, which began a slow decline in the CDβs overall support. The Southern workers were not appreciated by their northern counterparts so much as the Northβs opportunities were appreciated by the Southern workers; social conflict exists between the βlandedβ working-aristocracy, native to the urban cities, and the newcomers.
The South would see furthermore social turmoil, as the brief post-war economic situation gave host to a small revitalization of the Sicilian independence movement, whom many believed was being increasingly funded & aided by the Mafia. The movement quickly rose in power quite dramatically when it looked like the PDF might have taken the country for itself, however, the return of the CD provided an air of social normativity and thus weakened their extremist position.
As relations between the United States & Italy matured, more & more Italians began c
