A list of puns related to "Shubnikov–de Haas effect"
Okay, so I'm trying to figure out the Shubnikov de Haas effect. I've seen this from two figures, one from Fowler et al in 1966, where you see a conductance measurement as a function of gate voltage. You see the conductance increase with increasing voltage (electron density increases), but also oscillations start to occur with higher and higher amplitudes.
If one instead looks at a Hall bar structure and varies the magnetic field, one can look at the resistivity tensor. Longitudonal resistivity starts out constant (as expected from the Drude model), but starts showing oscillations in 1/B with increases amplitudes, for higher values of B. The xy resistivity (Hall resistivity) component starts off increasing linearly, but then also starts oscillating in 1/B.
So, this is the Shubnikov de Haas effect. But how does it come about? I've done some reading, and it starts with Landau levels, which you find from solving the magnetic field dependence of electrons. You get the kx dependent center coordinate of a QHO and so on. This ends up giving you the filling factor, which goes as 1/B. But from here I get kind of stuck. How does one take this to the next step, to the variation in the conductivity/resistivity? Something with scattering and level broadening.
Any theoretical descriptions of SdH oscillations that I've read explain them as arising from Landau levels crossing the Fermi level (or the chemical potential more accurately) as the magnetic field strength increases.
I'm having trouble understanding why that should cause oscillations in the magnetoresistance. Any help is appreciated.
How do you prefer to mix your shakers- usually panned to one side or a stereo track for both left and right?

I have watched the first three episodes of this show so far and have to say I am disappointed that such a large amount of time was spent on the obviously bogus medium Nicole De Haas. I thought the first episode was really good and I do find NDE's to be very credible. I hope the dodgy medium doesn't put off people who would otherwise have had their minds opened by the NDE accounts.
I don't know how anyone could watch De Haas and conclude that she was anything other than charlatan. I mean really that Tommy boy voice was embarrassing. If he's using her vocal chords then why does the voice change to a squeaky high pitched one and why does she start talking out the side of her mouth. I can only conclude the woman is mentally ill or she is a sociopath who has no conscience and will happily exploit the suffering of grieving people to make a buck.
Haas widens things dramatically more than imager and similar ones and doesn’t seem to negatively effect mixes in mono?
I really like the way it sounds and it doesn't change the volume of the sound when I pan this way. But I'm not sure if this is the right way to pan the instruments and drums.
I’m new to mixing. I recently started recording my guitar performance and create simple mixes of guitar, bass and drums.
There’s something I’ve been thinking lately but haven’t tried yet. It might sound strange, don’t know if it works but here’s the idea:
What if I double track my guitar as usual, 100 left and 100 right as usual. Then I copy and paste the two tracks in order to end up with quad tracks. At this point I use the haas effect but with a twist. I will be re-amping what are now guitar 3 and 4 with different cab impulse responses and even a different VST for the same model of amplifier used in the original 2 tracks. Then pan the two tracks 50 left and 50 right.
Has anyone tried this, would it even make a difference?
I'm really just curious about the sound engineering that went into this plugin (not trying to start the "what's the best stereo widening technique?" discussion here, haha). The concept of a mono-compatible Haas effect seems almost redundant - how could you possibly achieve a delay-based stereo effect without some level of phase cancellation? Alas, it seems to actually do the trick - when I switch the master buss to mono it sounds... well, just like a track in mono.
My hunch is that the 'Haas effect' mode of the plugin applies some kind of very subtle automated 'scrambling' to one or both of the left and right channels, such that the two waveforms become different enough that they don't cancel each other out, but I could be hopelessly wrong. I've actually tried to do this manually by first duplicating the signal, panning each hard left and right, delaying one by 10 ms or so, and finally adding an effects chain (subtle reverb, EQ, etc.) that alters one of the tracks just enough to minimize phase cancellation. Anyhow, the exact technique iZotope used for Ozone Imager is probably a proprietary secret but I'm curious about your hunches/insider knowledge/speculative claims/spurious opinions/whatever :)
Hello! I made a quick informative video explaining what the haas effect is and how to use it in your sound design. I use this trick a lot and hope it can help other sound designers.
Haas Effect Explained:
I found this recent video on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUPxDLMCUKM
It's from somebody that runs a company that writes software for food distribution and he's dealing with a bunch of complaints from customers complaining about mistakes in their orders.
But it turns out they aren't really mistakes, instead they are people expecting the original versions of items before they were Mandela effected. And if it's just bad memory, why would the complaints always be about the same products?
This is somebody who should know his food products, as it's his business. And he takes these types of things seriously as they effect his bottom line.
The first part of the video provides strong evidence of food related effects like Haas Avocados, McIntosh Apples, Kraft Stove Top stuffing etc.
On Alex Corbisero’s podcast Gary Gold let slip that Ruben is coming to the MLR. He’s signed for the Saracens next season so I’m guessing it’s a short term deal. Very exciting! I wonder where he goes.
So we know the Haas effect, take two copies of the same/similar sound, A and B, pan them, and move B forward by a few milliseconds, cool.
However, what problem would arise if we didn't move B forward and, following on, would there be any potential issue with 100% hard panning each and letting them play at the same time? I know this seems like a "just try it" type thing but I wonder if there's some phase stuff (which I'm not good enough to hear/detect at this stage) coming from this. Cheers :)
i know haas is delay based effect and stereo imager just spread stereo. but idk which situation need to use them. how i can use well ?
Lmaooooo. This was the scene:
Right before closing curtain
Nicole: “My buttons, they are closed.”
Girl helping her: “Uhh.. okay?”
Opens curtain
Nicole: “My...buttons...look.. they’re open..”

I really dislike this women for how she destroyed this show for millions of people that were drawn in from the first episode. Which was amazing.
I checked out her Facebook page, you know, the engine to her mediumship, and she’s claiming that “she knows she put herself in a vulnerable position by appearing on the show.”
No, you dummy. You’re not in a vulnerable position for being on the show. Laura Lynn Jackson was a medium on the show, and seemed very reputable. You’re in a vulnerable position for so clearly being a charlatan.
Netflix should really consider removing Episode 2/3, or at least her parts. Toss out that orbs of light schizophrenic, as well.
There is no doubt this woman is preying on people, and she has her little cult buddies there to back her up. The series will never be as good as it can be, simply because of these two episodes.
That is all.
