They say that people who watch black and white films dream in black and white. I've heard that something similar happens to people who play videogames, where the gamer becomes conditioned to expect third person player control when maneuvering an alternate reality, just as the film goer expects alternate realities to appear in grayscale. I wonder how long a person has to play video games or watch old movies to experience this.
You've been an actor in my dreams for four years and four months now, but you've held my attention longer than that. God knows the exact point at which I had consumed enough content for my subconscious to accept you. It happened during a particularly lonely period in my life, the kind of social vacancy that parasocial content fills like air to a vacuum. In that first dream you were far from me but more fully present than I had ever experienced watching you on screen.
We both know that there is so much of you missing from the video and podcasts. The improvisational nature of the form engenders a sort of vulnerability, where filling silence occasionally means divulging intimate life details to keep the conversation going. No one making anything is able to entirely filter themselves out of the product. Despite all the disclosed knowledge I've accumulated from watching, I cannot claim to know you.
What is absent from the videos and podcasts is not necessarily the real you that vanishes when the camera turns on (though this certainly happens): It is the people we'd become in each other's presence. The absence of mutuality makes my understanding of you unreal.
And yet someone real walks in my dreams. Someone fills space in my head, someone sates my social desire. In the dream the gap in knowledge between us closes; suddenly someone is there who had never been accessible before. Who is that person? Does he visit you as well?
Prisms are a decompositional tool. They take the apparent whole of white light and disperse it into its constituent frequencies. If we held one up to this third person between us, the fiction of you we've co authored through algorithmic feedback, what would he be made of? How would he fall apart?
Maybe, once this ghost haunting us both is opened, the dreaming might
stop. But until then, I'll dream of you again.

So I had gone on an oddities website to find something weird for my wife as a Christmas gift (we both love weird/spooky things), and I found a shrunken head replica. Perfect! Boom, ordered, and will even be in well before Christmas. Fast forward to today I got an email saying it was delivered and I looked but there was no package. I look at my email and realize I’ve put my neighbors address on there by mistake, also the package was actually shipped two days before. I instantly shouted “Ah shit!” And had my wife’s attention so I had to tell her. “The neighbors have my package and I’m sure they’ve opened it and they think we are freaks! When I went and asked about it they told me they would check and come back over to let me know. I waited all day but ended up leaving the house in the evening. It wasn’t until I got back I saw the box sitting on our doorstep, opened of course. My wife loved the little guy and she is still cracking up laughing about it! My Mexican neighbors probably said “Dios mío es del diablo!” And are probably saging their house right now.
TL;DR I accidentally shipped a shrunken head replica to my neighbors and they probably think we worship the devil.

I hold my breath as I recognize a missing student’s face among them.
The tribe disappeared long ago, but that’s not very comforting since I just walked into my office to see it decorated with the mutilated heads of my coworkers.
