Can you give me some background information about the current target audience of the types of shortwave radio stations still on the air?

I've been listening to shortwave stations through web SDR websites. I want to know why the stations that still exist are still on the air. If they have a target audience or if they're just an artifact of another time that haven't been decommissioned. I've noticed they fall into 4 categories that I outlined below.

  • A disproportionate amount of stations are religious. I'm familiar with religion. I was raised in a strictly religious family. But I want to know specifically who these target. I was looking at other threads on this subreddit and I learned their primary audience is outside of the United States. But I want to know what countries they have most in mind when they blast their programming. One specific station that piqued my interest is called World's Last Chance radio (they're flat earthers who refer to Jesus as Yehoshua). They aren't anything like your standard American Christian conservatives. I want to know who's giving them money and what their deal is.

  • A disproportionate amount of stations have to do with Cuba. The Cuban government operates Radio Havana Cuba and Radio Rebelde. The U.S government operates Radio Marti. That's at least 3 stations aimed at a country with only 11 million people. My hypothesis is that these could either be targeted at (A): Cubans living in Cuba. (B): People in other Spanish speaking countries. (C): Very old Cuban-American senior citizens who have shortwave radios for some reason. Or (D): Relics of a different time that are still on the air because the benefit of leaving them on is greater than the cost of shutting them down. But I want to know what the deal is with the Cuban presence on shortwave radio. If it's due to one of my hypotheses or something else.

  • Another group of stations I noticed are external services of national governments. I picked up the external service of the government of Romania that was in English. I'm asking about these because many of them have shut down. So I want to know what separates the ones that are still on the air from the ones that shut down. What allowed Romania's external broadcast to survive while Canada's shut down? I'm also curious who their English broadcast is targeting. English is the international lingua franca, but I want to know specifically who they're targeting. And I found ones in Turkish (from the government of Turkey), and Chinese (from the Government of China). Those languages aren't spoken as widely as English and concentrated in smaller areas. So why wo

Any news or non-religious talk radio still on shortwave?

I remember back when I was a kid, there was a lot of international news on SWR, especially foreign countries broadcasting news in English. I also remember there used to be more talk radio that wasn’t just religious/evangelical in nature.

I just got a shortwave radio about a week ago, and I really was hoping for more of the above.

What Was so Special About Soviet Shortwave Radios?

I was reading this article about a former Soviet shortwave jamming station in Georgia and the article states: " Soviet-made shortwave radios, introduced in the 1960s, assisted the interference. ".

What does that mean? were they purposely designed to receive badly? are they referring to the transmitters themselves?

Does anyone have a shortwave radio license?

Imagining a scenario where the traditional communications channels go down - perhaps the internet still exists, but can you get on it? You have to wait in line for an hour to get 15 minutes online through a patched in government system - like going to the DMV. Perhaps an EMP sets off a situation like this example.

It seems like being able to tune into broadcasts all over the world would be helpful. Also nice to be able to communicate out to others at long distance.

If anyone is passionate about this subject, would be curious what your take is on how important this tool would be for weathering a collapse of traditional communications.

I'm thankful for radio (especially shortwave)

Things are too connected now, the global village run amuck. Turn on the computer, fire up the browser, feel the noise of the internet. Social media, news, friends, porn, games, everything. Day after day, night after night. Millions of people, all their voices, feelings, desires, hatred, every wretched and beautifully thing instantly on demand forever. All around me, all the time, now iv gone numb to it all.

I'm alone and all i have is the ceaseless torrent of mean spirited energy coming from my computer. I'm all alone and this is all i see of humanity's character. Until i got a radio.

With radio i can stay connected, but at a nice distance. Now I can unplug from the excesses of the noise. It's simple and easy to use. A mobile receiver (that i have at least) serves one purpose. It's not "smart", it doesn't do 80 different extremely distracting things and that's how i like it. I also love how everything isn't provided on a silver platter with radio. It gives us something almost unheard of now a days, mystery. Now i know, there's online ARGs, legends and the like, i understand. But there really isn't any inherent mystery with surfing the net is there? With radio, (especially short wave) you'll never know what you'll find until you start turning that dial.

I'm glad that radio broadcasts are still around and hope that people keep shortwave broadcasting alive into the future.

Need help - is shortwave the best way to listen to terrestrial radio from across the country?

Hi all, I am new to shortwave and new to this community, so sorry if this is a "duh" type question.

I just moved to Texas and want to listen to radio station KNBR in San Francisco. Is shortwave the best way to do that? What's the cheapest/simplest system you'd recommend? Or is there an online way to listen to far-off radio stations?

I've googled this and looked at your sidebar links, but haven't found a clear answer yet.

Would be so grateful for any help or advice, thanks in advance!

Simple shortwave radio receiver on a breadboard

Shortwave radio receiver on a breadboard

On a whim, I cobbled together a shortwave radio receiver on a breadboard with the components I had laying around (pictured). It is basically a crystal radio followed by an audio amplifier stage made with an op amp. The antenna is about 6-7 meters of wire that I hanged in my apartment.

The receiver isn't very selective: I routinely hear two or three stations at the same time.

I've been listening to it the last few nights and this is what I was able to hear (I am based in Montreal):

  • WWCR on 13.845MHZ, 5.935MHz and 4.840MHz (weak). The transmitter is around 1700km away.
  • China Radio International on 9.580MHz. The transmitter is in Cuba, about 2600km away.
  • WTWW, not sure which frequency. About same distance as WWCR.
  • Other stations I haven't been able to identify yet.

This has been great fun.
