A list of puns related to "Self Injurious Behavior Inhibiting System"
Did you ever feel like you had to protect your nparents from themselves (a form of parentification), but your nparents didn't have obvious issues like substance addiction or mental health conditions? Did you believe your nparents when they announced that you were too much of a worrier?
My nmom has a death wish. She couches this phenomenon in phrases like "there's no point in worrying" and "you need to stop worrying" when the truth is that she is always half-heartedly trying to commit physical or emotional suicide (eg, traveling during the pandemic [she was very high risk], ignoring a serious chronic medical condition, hiding credit card debt from my father, approaching strangers in physically dangerous situations, volunteering to the point of exhaustion). My whole life, I've felt that it was my job to protect her from herself. She is so unpredictable that I have never felt safe or protected.
Anyway, I expressed my confusion to my therapist--how could I feel like I spent my whole life babysitting an addict when she wasn't addicted to anything?--and the therapist pointed out that my nmom's self-destructive behavior, while seemingly benign, caused me to feel like I needed to protect her from herself. In that respect, there is no difference between my experience and the experience of a CoN whose nparent is a substance abuser or has another obvious addiction. It was an epiphany.
tw// self harm, psychosis mention
Is there any autistic here who struggles with self harm as well?
I am autistic, I also experience psychosis. I cannot really distinguish whether I'm harming myself during a meltdown or if it is not related to me being autistic. What are your experiences on this?
Psychosis surely makes me do things that I do not want due to delusions or hallucinations. But this one is a bit tricky because I also had some intrusive thoughts during meltdowns about self harm in the past. But I usually take it to the action when I am in a psychotic episode.
If anyone experience something like this and know few coping mechanisms let me know because I was 1 year clean few hours ago and I am not right now, I am disappointed in myself.

When i get too stressed or upset i often start doing things like face slapping, punching my head/body, scratching or biting my hands. I recently had a pretty rough meltdown and i have bruises all over myself and at some point i hit my head super hard and i am worried i may have done some damage. It usually doesnβt get this bad, but Its gotten much worst lately for some reason, and if anyone has tips to help me stop myself i would really appreciate it.
This is from an article in Psychology Today, and it made me weirdly..... hopeful?
Then I realized that per year, that means about 177 people of this subreddit die by suicide. (This is if we assume that all of the subbed people are alive and that there are no duplicate accounts, in reality this number is probably far smaller)
But still, fuck man. How odd to think that so many of the users will be gone by this time next year. Ill miss you all, if I'm still around.
The article btw, its a fun read: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/curious/201405/why-do-people-kill-themselves-new-warning-signs
Do you ever get driven to SIB (self injurious behavior) or the temptation to do whenever you go through moments of rejection from your LO?
I've really been struggling with that, and it's been getting worse over the past couple months. I feel so embarrassed for caring so much for someone who doesn't care in return. For asking him to hang out only to be rejected...again. And then, at home, I'll hit myself in the head a few times, telling myself of course he doesn't want anything to do with an idiot like me.
Then he's sweet as pie to me, comes over and drinks with me till 8 in the morning, and I feel on top of the world. Then comes a week of ignored messages, flaked out plans...and I sink again. I hate this.
As the ACE study has shown, child abuse and neglect is the single most preventable cause of mental illness, the single most common cause of drug and alcohol abuse, and a significant contributor to leading causes of death such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and suicide.
Psychologists usually try to help people use insight and understanding to manage their behavior. However, neuroscience research shows that very few psychological problems are the result of defects in understanding; most originate in pressures from deeper regions in the brain that drive our perception and attention. When the alarm bell of the emotional brain keeps signaling that you are in danger, no amount of insight will silence it.
Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves.
As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourselfβ¦The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know. That takes an enormous amount of courage.
For adults and children alike, being in control of ourselves requires becoming familiar with our inner world and accurately identifying what scares, upsets, or delights us
-Excerpts from "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel Van Der Kolk
How do you guys deal with self-injurious behavior in your classroom? I'm talking about students who do it because of their disability, like an autistic kid headbanging. Some frequent ones are biting hands or arms, headbanging, hitting oneself, or skin picking.
Hiii
Iβve recently been feeling interested in self injurious behavior like punching my chest or pressing my ears/eyes to pain. Any ideas what I may replace with ? Thanks !
I was asked recently how to talk to a friend she found out is self-harming. They tried to offer to get help and even spoke with someone to get them help but since then the friend won't speak to her. It was suggested that she just make sure the friend knows she is there for them and be prepared to listen if they want to talk.
I used to work with much younger kids who self-harmed because they would get the 1:1 attention, and they had significant trauma. After hearing about this individual it sounds more like a coping mechanism and to help gain some control in their lives.
Any one work more specifically with young adults who self-harm? I am an Addictions Counselor but also do Co-Occurring and Mental Health so I haven't worked in this area in awhile.
Thanks!
