A list of puns related to "Scallop aquaculture"
Good afternoon Notacultists, I am here to provide tit-jacking DD on Scallops so you can get your weekend DD fix before tomorrows members only stream!
First things first.
Edit 1. scallop regulation and fukery
edit 2. who the fuk downvotes scallops?
How do you say Scallop?
It depends on your dialect and where you live but there is only one right way, so if you pronounce it like you're from "away" (ie. midwest) then get fuk'd.
Next, what are Scallops?
Scallops are a bivalve mollusk, meaning they have two valves (two)(shells)
Two species primarily targeted are Bay and Sea Scallops both found in New England and Mid Atlantic (not mid west) waters.
Bay Scallops are smaller and are available primarily from October-March (unless they're farm raised*) and are an inshore species generally found in bays, sounds and harbors.
*Bay scallops are cultivated in the northeast however at a very small scale not yet commercially viable. The Chinese stole broodstock and have developed their own bay scallop aquaculture industry.
The loss of eelgrass and other environmental factors that are increasingly plaguing our coastal ecosystems have diminished the wild bay scallop population.
Sea Scallops are larger and live in deep offshore waters. These are available year round generally.
Scallops have an enormous economic value for their shucked meats (aductor muscle) with sea scallops leading the charge at nearly $500 million in landing value. Sea scallops have gone from $5/# at the boat in 2000 to $15-20/# at the boat recently.
Bay Scallops, since they've become more scarce yet have a more tender and sweet profile can fetch upwards of $20/# at the boat and $40-$50/# at the market.
Great, how do they catch Scallops?
Big boats for sea scallops vary from 40' (dayboat) and 70+' (tripboats) that drag huge steel dregdges behind them. Dayboats generally make day trips to the grounds and back in 24-48 hrs and trip boats fish upwards of 10 days per trip.
Yeah Scallopers are bad ass fishermen and make bank!
Bay scallopers generally fish inshore waters with 20-30' skiffs towing several smaller drags behind them.

##South of the Sea
The southernmost territory of China is the island of Hainan, one of the countryβs smallest and poorest regions. Hainan has long struggled with water availability due to its unique plantation economy and lack of major independent river systems that feed into the tropical and temperate coastal mainland of China. This means that certain large dam projects must be accelerated within this province, outside of the scope of waterways management initiatives. Additionally, the regionβs overall strengths must be enhanced by means of unique policy decisions that are only viable due to its island status. Finally, Hainanβs potential for modest industry and technological development will be explored.
###Tamed Frontier
The governmentβs relationship with Hainan has always been distant, and bred a distinct regional culture of independent action. This must be repurposed to the benefit of both the local people and China proper. As such, Hainan will be elevated to the status of Province, and will be designated as the primary cultural interaction point between China and the outside world. The island will have special border regulation to permit uncapped tourism, with minor barriers introduced between Hainan and the mainland in order to prevent βtouristsβ from illegally leaving the province. This is not, however, expected to be a serious concern.
Hainanβs special status will be enhanced by a restrictive development policy, with wide swathes of the interior designated as national wildernesses. Small coastal enclaves and significant segments of the remaining hinterland have further been categorized as recreational lands under provincial jurisdiction. The islandβs wild character will remain, through power of policy. Alongside this effort, a recurring annual fund of $13.5 million will be put towards enrichment of the natural attractions of the island, for tourist purposes.
###Lights
Independent dam initiatives will provide the basis for all of Hainanβs future growth, and planned future dam and reservoir areas are the primary cutouts from national wildernesses in the deep interior. The Songtao Dam, impeding the Nandu River, is on schedule for commission later this year. The resulting reservoir will be the second largest in all of China, and the dam will provide a substantial irrigation, fishing and tourism area just north of the primary wilderness zone. However

One thing I can't bring myself to eat is shellfish. I grew up in a place where red tide was common so despite the fact that there are strict regulations in place for shellfish going to market I was still worried eating it would kill me. In addition, the squishy, slimy texture just does not appeal to me. I know things like mussels and scallops are some of the most sustainable aquaculture items and I also live in a place where lobster is common but eating a whole one freaks me out. Can anyone think of ways of preparing this food/hiding it within other dishes so that I can get over this particular aversion? Thx!
Hi, first time poster and just found this sub. It was a struggle to find the right place to write out this idea I have that I want anyone to take and run with for a couple of government programs I'm trying to write out and gather info on to present to anyone and everyone I can find who could put it in action. And any advice where to start would be great- I bolded all the sentences that are areas I want advice in if people are just skimming. *Note cross posting this as I find more subs that fit the topic- sorry if flair isn't quite right wasn't sure how to categorize this.
I read about the illegal fishing this week, and I knew the ocean was in trouble but I didn't know how bad.
Could there be anyway to present a green effort to (for my background I'm a US citizen- anyone from any other country can take this idea and run with it) us legislative or executive branch to build fish hatcheries that are on a grand scale that are almost all strictly to reintroduce healthy grown fish (we could start with fresh water species at least) and a few salt water varieties that would best help the ocean recover? The fish breeds at the hatcheries would have to be localized for where it's located. It could be a state incentive maybe to get money for the state. *I know this doesn't fix the pollution issue but idk how the heck to tackle that in the ocean*
It would make a ton of jobs for the government that would also do good. My main reasoning is I read about how much smaller fish are now compared to like the 1960s because we have over fished to a point no fish are full grown enough. I think if they had a safe place to reach a certain larger size before being reintroduced it would have to help some what.
I also think it be interesting if the general public could get involved in the fish hatchery idea. Maybe the government primarily focuses on ocean species while people could locally get involved in raising species local to their lakes and rivers.
The local program could be done by offer tax credits for doing the job or even paying the person straight up for doing it. But they have to prove they were reintroduced and were healthy when reintroduction was done. This would also create a handful of government jobs for inspectors to go out and keep track of the fish being raised. If the person keeps doing the program year after year maybe it could add more money each year they successfully do a reintroduction.
**Also is there any research done someone could point me to t

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
