The Storm that Killed Samuel Bellamy, One of the Wealthiest Pirates in History

Samuel Bellamy was one of the richest pirates to ever set sail in the Golden Age of Piracy (the richest was probably Henry Every). He sailed for only a year and yet was able to amass a fleet of ships through capture. However, on April 26th, 1717, his ship Whydah, along with the Fisher, Mary Anne, and Ann Galley, was caught in a nor'easter. What follows is from The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard (2007):

[ At about ten at night, the weather began turning ugly. Heavy squalls of rain began to fall, the pitch black sky was shattered by bolts of lightning. Worst of all, the wind had shifted so that it was coming from the southeast and east, driving the vessels toward the unseen shore of Cape Cod. The drunken pirates aboard the Mary Anne soon lost sight of the other vessels. Baker, perhaps distressed, began cursing the Mary Anneβ€˜s cook, Alexander Mackconachy, who was manning the helm and had apparently steered her closer to land. He β€œwould make no more to shoot him, then he would a dog,” Baker howled, musket in hand. β€œYou will never go on shore to tell your story!”

Not long thereafter, the shore presented itself, as if rebuking Baker. The Mary Anne was now being battered by twenty to thirty foot seas, which broke in cascades of foam all around her. Everyone realized they might run aground at any moment and be dashed to pieces by the angry sea. Mackconachy begged the pirates to swing her around, bow to the beach, to give her the best chance of surviving the inevitable collision with the bottom. Just after they had swung around the Mary Anne struck, shaking the hull violently and sending wine casks tumbling about the decks. Baker grabbed an axe and began hacking away at her masts, as bringing them down would reduce the stress on the creaking hull. With two of the three masts down, another of the pirates cried out in terror, β€œFor God’s sake, let us go down into the hold and die together!” The men, captives and pirates alike, huddled on deck and in the hold, expecting to be drowned at any moment. The illiterate pirates begged Mackconachy to read from the Book of Common Prayer. As they listened to the prayers in the cook’s Gaelic accent, lightning flashed in the sky, wind screamed through the rigging, and the wooden hull shuddered in the surf.

The crews of the other prize vessels were more sober and, possibly a

The Farmer-Labor Presidential Nomination of 1900 | Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections

For a decade following the midterms of 1890, the Farmer-Labor Party found themselves facing landslide defeat after defeat, reduced to a tiny minority in both houses of Congress. Yet, the midterms of 1902 have become a beacon of hope for the party, with Federal Republicans losing their House majority, 8 Senate seats, and defeating Farmer-Labor by only 1.3% in the popular vote. With the party ascendant anew and unions growing at the fastest rate in decades amidst countless strikes, party leaders see a chance of victory on the horizon for the first time in years, with the once thoroughly dry party of John Bidwell becoming increasingly wet under the influence of a nationally influential newspaperman.

William Randolph Hearst: With the defection of the New York Tribune to the Federal Republican Party following the 1874 death of Horace Greeley, the Labor and later Farmer-Labor parties found themselves lacking a major voice in the press, with Tom Watson's Weekly failing to expand greatly beyond rural areas. In 1889 stepped William Randolph Hearst into this void, beginning what would become a nationwide media empire some have credited with turning the Farmer-Labor base against prohibition. Hearst successfully won election as Governor of New York over the midterms of 1902, only the state's second labor aligned Governor since 1854, and gained attention for his refusal to enforce prohibition, implementation of the referendum system in New York, cutting government spending through a waste commission, and largely successful efforts to place public utilities under the control of municipal governments and weaken the Tammany Hall Federal Republican machine, successful prosecuting several Tammany-affiliated politicians on charges of corruption. Hearst has sought the presidency as a unity candidate for anti-prohibition Farmer-Laborites, seeking to deny President Dewey the Liberal Anti-Prohibition Party's nomination if he seeks re-election and possibly even form a coalition between the LAP and Farmer-Labor. Campaigning upon bringing his achievements as Governor to the national level, Hearst has also endorsed a further reduction in tariffs, the establishment of a central bank, and an end to prison labor being used for marketed goods, while taking a moderate stand on foreign policy, having supported the Pacific War but opposed the expansionist efforts of the Houston Administration in the war's aftermath, while strongly opposing the British Empire and praising both Pr

Pirates were antiwork

Just thought it'd be neat to share this bit of the history of antiwork philosophy. Not all, but some pirates in the "golden age" were the "good guys" -- democratically run commune ships stealing from a wealthy elite protected by totalitarian theocratic monarchies. Below is an account from the wikipedia page for Black Sam Bellamy.

>Bellamy had wanted to let the captain keep his ship, but his crew had just voted to burn it, and the captain of the merchant vessel had just declined an invitation to join the pirates. Bellamy is attributed with making this now-famous speech:
>
>I am sorry they won't let you have your sloop again, for I scorn to do any one a mischief, when it is not to my advantage; damn the sloop, we must sink her, and she might be of use to you. Though you are a sneaking puppy, and so are all those who will submit to be governed by laws which rich men have made for their own security; for the cowardly whelps have not the courage otherwise to defend what they get by knavery; but damn ye altogether: damn them for a pack of crafty rascals, and you, who serve them, for a parcel of hen-hearted numbskulls. They vilify us, the scoundrels do, when there is only this difference, they rob the poor under the cover of law, forsooth, and we plunder the rich under the protection of our own courage. Had you not better make then one of us, than sneak after these villains for employment?

The speech is likely embellished as the source text wasn't first hand, but is generally pretty reliable. In fact, there are accounts of pirate ships that shared wealth equally between the crew, voted on all decisions not relating to battle, allowed people of any race, religion, or gender to join, and even had civil unions between men. Many relied on fear in an effort to avoid bloodshed, not wanting to resort to violence, and would let merchants go free after taking their wealth. Not all pirates were good people, but some were freed slaves, religious exiles, LGTBTQ+, and more, with no other realistic avenues towards survival. Most of these stories were scrubbed by Puritans who saw them as a threat to the social order, instead focusing on the most evil of pirates to cast them all in the same light.

Same story, different era. Keep up the good fight, good pirates. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

[OC] What would all-time rosters look like if everyone went home like LeBron in 2015?

TL;DR

Made all-time hometown rosters with original 30 NBA teams + 25 new teams to split populated areas and big teams (spreadsheet + map)

Player Pool and Team Pool

I used the top 969 players who have at least 10000 minutes played in their career.

Why 10000 minutes played? Because that's the lower standard set by Basketball-Reference to get on their ABA career leaderboard (15000 MP for NBA). I added George Mikan, because even though he hasn't played enough minutes, he's featured in All-Time ESPN NBARank and Bill Simmons Hall of Fame Pyramid.

I started off with the current 30 teams. To split up the Lakers and Clippers, I gave the Clippers their proposed Inglewood site.

As I looked at the map of player hometowns, I realized that there were:

  • some areas that had a lot of players, but few close NBA teams
  • some areas that had bloated rosters with too many players

Based off city population and arena size, I added 25 new teams.

  • I obviously had to give Seattle their team back
  • Birmingham, North Little Rock and Shreveport helped to split up the South
  • Pittsburgh and St. Louis were big cities without teams
  • Berkeley added to siphon off San Francisco
    • if I add Oakland, it takes away too many players
  • Anaheim and Westwood added in Southern California (Clippers & Lakers)
  • Winston-Salem and Raleigh to pare down Charlotte
  • Lansing to prune Detroit
  • 2nd Atlanta team in suburb of College Park
  • 2nd Washington team and Baltimore
  • 2 more teams in Chicago (Rosemont and South Side) + a team in Gary
  • 2nd Indiana team + Louisville & Lexington
  • 2nd Philadelphia team in suburb of Wynnewood
  • 3 more teams in the New York Area (Newark, Queens and Long Island)

The Method

I started off gathering hometowns due to this fantastic database by Reuben Fischer-Baum ([original article source here](https://deadspin.com/infographics-where-do-pro-basketball-players-come-from-5132615

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

The Farmer-Labor Presidential Nomination of 1900 | Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections

The devastation wrought upon Farmer-Labor by the midterms of 1898 and enthusiasm for the Federal Republican cause in the aftermath of the Pacific War is front and center in the mind of almost all in the party, as the radicals of Richard F. Pettigrew attempt to consolidate their control over the party.

Richard F. Pettigrew: 52 year old Richard F. Pettigrew has led the radical wing of the Farmer-Labor Party from near exile to a near majority within their congressional caucus. Combining the fiery socialism of past radicals with a cunning political savvy, Pettigrew, a proponent of tariffs, has also been the most prominent opponent of what he dubs β€œimperial Washington,” arguing that "the imperial policy is an object of enrichment of the imperial class, the monopolists, bankers, and land owners who support it to expand their exploitation and robbery of workers abroad.” Allying with a personal friend, and current housemate, Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, Pettigrew toured the United States in opposition to the Pacific War before travelling to Russia to agitate for Lenin's freedom, where he was arrested and imprisoned for several months, with the Houston Administration accused of a failure to act quickly to secure his release, though an eventual deal was negotiated by the administration promising to keep Lenin in the United States in return for Pettigrew's release. Quickly returning to the political fore, Pettigrew led radicals to oppose the Treaty of Hong Kong. While Pettigrew remains the undisputed leader of the party's left flank, he has mildly alienated some allies since his return from Russia by arguing for redrafting the constitution and praising Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto. Pettigrew and his supporters argue that he is the candidate that best represents the values of the party and that he is the party's strongest candidate due to his presentation of a sharp contrast with any likely Farmer-Labor nominee.

William Jennings Bryan: Managing Lyman Trumbull’s campaign at only 20 years of age before launching his own unsuccessful 1896 campaign at Trumbull’s funeral 15 years later, William Jennings Bryan lost the 1896 election by the smallest of margins in the popular vote, with many crediting him for the survival of the Farmer-Labor Party. Unsuccessful during the midterms as the pro-war yet anti-imperialist Brya
