- Now-fired Hampton bank CEO, Russell Laffitte, as financial representative for a teenager injured in an accident, inexplicably loaned Alex Murdaugh $40,000 from the teen’s settlement funds in 2011
- Russell Laffitte, who was fired as CEO of Palmetto State Bank on Jan. 7, signed off on a $40,000 loan from (Malik Williams) an Estill teenager’s approximately $58,000 in settlement proceeds.
- Alex Murdaugh requested the loan and was required to pay it back in six weeks with interest, documents show.
- “I find that highly unusual,” said Margaret Day, a Bluffton-based estate attorney for the Law Office of Margaret S. Day LLC.
- The personal loan to Alex Murdaugh was unsecured, meaning there was no collateral to back it up if Murdaugh never paid, and
- The loan to Alex Murdaugh contained no description about how Murdaugh would use the money, according to the promissory note.
- The money, with interest, was returned to the account one month and three days later in the form of a money order from Russell Laffitte, but it’s not clear whether Alex Murdaugh himself paid it back.

- The "Loan" was found among the documents requested by the S.C. Supreme Court’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel ("ODC") as part of its investigation into Alex Murdaugh and its inquiry about Russell Laffitte’s involvement.

He is just incredibly creepy and loathsome. I only knew him as the wholesome father in 'Boy Meets World', basically the opposite role, which he also was great as. But in Deadwood he is just perfectly despicable.
He is clearly very intelligent and perceptive, the way he nails Farnum-- "It must cost you sleep, the guests you drive off, the chances for thieving and bilking you lose, needing to rub against your betters"-- and calls out Bullock's childhood bullying making him so full of wrath. But he is not in New York City, where people regularly blackmail and extort each-other using their privilege and status. He's in Deadwood, a place where people sometimes, just sometimes, get exactly what they have coming.
The scene where Bullock finally has enough-- very politely letting him finish his sentence-- and beats the shit out of him, literally punching his teeth down his throat, is incredibly satisfying. But Bullock doesn't kill him, he just beats him bloody and sends his sorry ass back where he came, tied to a mule.
In that way, he sets up the whole arc for the show, all the way through season 3. As a tool to show Bullock's wrath, his natural urge toward violence, but also his desire to restrain those impulses, to protect the people in his community, he is perfect. If Russ wasn't such a great actor it would have seemed contrived. We are supposed to contrast him with Hearst, another out-of-town big-shot who believes his wealth and status allow him to abuse and extort anyone. Bullock can deal with Otis Russell with a dozen solid punches to the face, but with Hearst he can't. Bullock needs to think long-term, patiently, strategically, using tools other than brute force. It's a testament to the long-term plotting of the show, and the incredible acting talent that made it happen.
