Summary:
In 2002, an old man committed suicide in Eastlake, Ohio, leaving behind $82,000 in his bank account. Calling himself Joseph Newton Chandler III, he'd worked as an electrical engineer, but mostly kept to himself, making little gadgets in his small apartment. When authorities attempted to contact next of kin, based on his birth certificate, they learned that he was not Joseph Newton Chandler - who died as a boy in Texas, in 1945.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. Marshals, with the help of forensic genealogists Colleen Fitzpatrick and Margaret Press, announced the man's true identity - Robert Ivan Nichols.
As part of his press release, Marshal Pete Elliott, who heads the Cleveland office, thanked the Reddit community for the leads that have come in over the years. I spoke to him today and he's asked for help in identifying potential crimes Nichols may have committed.
Nichols, he says, had a temper that came out in frightening outbursts, sometimes. He once modified a toy BB gun into a fully-automatic weapon which he then used to destroy a collection of toy airplanes while his kids watched. During a birthday party he told his wife it was time to eat. She suggested they wait for everyone to arrive. Nichols responded by digging a fist into his child's cake and eating from his hands, saying, "We'll eat when I say we eat."
Marshals are most interested in what Nichols was doing between 1975 and 1978. They believe he may have been involved in crimes that occurred in New York and Florida (but for now will not elaborate). Nichols obtained Chandler's birth certificate from Buffalo City Hall. He lived under the name Nichols until 1976 before switching to Chandler in 1978.
Elliott also wants people to look at two photographs of items found in Nichols' apartment by investigators. The first is a camera lens from Japan. The second is a sticker dated 1965.

U.S. Marshals said Nichols was a World War II veteran and was a Purple Heart recipient.
According to his family when he came home from the war he burned his uniform and moved to California in the 1960s.
In 1964 he got a divorce from his wife, U.S. Marshals said he told his wife and his kids he was leaving them.
Investigators said in 1965 his family reported him missing and never saw him again. In 1978 U.S. Marshals said Nichols stole the identity of Chandler, a Texas child who was killed in an accident years before. Later in 1978 Nichols moved to Eastlake. He lived in Eastlake until his suicide in July of 2002. Nichols left behind $82,000 in a bank account with no next of kin.
