I wanted to thank the mods for their permission in allowing me to post here.

Around 7 months ago, I started developing an app with the idea that it could point you to locations (or other devices) and tell you how far away you are. After speaking to a friend of mine, he told me that I made a perfect digital Qibla compass. In the past couple months I've further developed it so now it does 2 things:

1. Points you to any place or person on the planet using an equation that takes into account your location and points you in the correct direction
2. Provides you with a community-updated map for the area surrounding you

Qibla Compass uses the GPS of your smartphone to get your exact position with latitude and longitude. It takes the difference between magnetic and true north in consideration. Given these data, Qibla Compass can find the right direction of Kaaba accurately. The direction is pointed by the arrow.

I've been using a Qibla finder app on my phone ever since I've started praying, but throughout the years I would sometimes double check with it and it'd give me a completely different direction (still within the same bounds like South-West, which is in my area) and to clarify, I have used multiple apps before and they all change the same way. I'm not sure what to do anymore, is this just something natural that's caused by Earth's rotation or something? I need help.

Three months ago I've published a Prayer Times App for the country I live in, for both Android and iOS. Currently, both apps are being used by ~2.2K users, and there is a lot of potential to increase the number of users. The app has features like prayer time notifications, in-app language settings, islamic midnight and time of night's last third, a calendar that shows prayer times for the whole year, etc.

I've implemented widgets and a watch app for the iOS version. Now, I want to build widgets and a watch app for the Android version as well. Later in the future, I want to add a qibla compass.

The app now handles all prayer times locally on the phone, and I would really like some help to implement a backend solution so the app can sync prayer times from the server.

I am not looking to hire a developer, but rather for some help for the sake of our Ummah. I have a full time job as an iOS developer, and I only develop my prayer times apps when my family gives me time, so the development pace is really slow.

I was today years old when I learned the ancient mosques of Andalusia and North Africa do not face Mecca. Now the first thing that may come to your mind, "well maybe because the Qibla was Jerusalem in the past", or "maybe the crusades altered the mosques after they took over Andalusia". Nope. These Mosques were built decades after the prophet's pbuh death, by then the Qibla was already Mecca. The second thing is, the crusades did not demolish all the Muslim buildings in Spain, they kept some of them, but accessorized them with Christian symbols. And third, there were mosques outside of Andalusia, in North Africa, which also have the same Qibla as those in Andalusia.

Before I tell you what kind of Qibla those Muslims used, surely you need to make sure they were not in fact facing Mecca in the first place. How do you know that? Well most of these mosque are rectangular and clearly aligned in the same particular direction, they also have Mihrab (where the Imam stands) so you can tell. Look at this 1min video, an Arab lady visits the ancient mosque of "Mezquito de Cordoba" (which was the biggest in Andalusia), the Mihrab is very clear. She also notices how the Qibla was not accurate (mistakenly believes early Muslims did not have the proper tools to know Qibla).

Now the answer you're waiting for: Where exactly were they facing? I picked 3 mosques from Spain, and one from Tunisia, which were all built between 670-1210 AD. I look at the direction of the buildings, and draw lines, they are all roughly parallel, and point as follows:

4 mosques here are: Mezquita de Cordoba, Almonaster Mosque, Mosque in Alcazar of Jerez, Mosque of Kairouan (Tunisia). [Compass/photos were not rotated in any way]

I could not find much info on why these mosques were facing that way, except one source which points out a pattern. These lines are roughly parallel with the line that goes between Jerusalem and Mecca. As you can see here.

Does anyone know of a good application that provides a reliable direction to the Qibla? Mine always changes, and it isn't reliable.

Or a compass I could buy online which won't break after a couple of uses?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
